After four whole days at my new job, I'm feeling pretty dang good about my decision to take this position.
New supervisor is super nice, super chill, and thinks I'm the greatest thing since sliced bread lol.
He told me on day three that he's training me to take over his position. I have no idea if that's in a month or a year or five years or what, but still, that's good for my future career options.
HR told us we should plan on working from home for at least the next six months, and even after that, they don't want more than 35% of employees in the office at one time EVER AGAIN. Love love love the thought of very rarely having to deal with my crappy commute!
What a change from my last position, and totally worth the $18/month pay cut I hope you like cat food.

My job hunt progresses. The other candidate has done nothing.
I can't really do what's necessary to meet all the people I need to, so I'm just keeping busy on FB right now. Letters will be going out soon for the preliminary interview in June.

Best of luck Hatian! DH and I are both job hunting too. His current job is tentatively guaranteed through August. He recieved a voluntary severance offer this week. If he leaves now he'll get 13 weeks at 130% of his pay. If he waits it out he will get 10 weeks at standard pay. He has two weeks to decide. I think he should take the offer now, since the payout is 69% more, and he can focus on job hunting. He is more hesitant with the current unemployment situation. I'm almost halfway through my medical coding course and still employed in travel for now. My boss is still adamant that she wants to keep me, but if small business loans don't go through I think I'll probably be unemployed in two months. Maybe that's why I'm anxious for DH to line up something new right away. Its a lot of uncertainty with us both potentially being unemployed at the same time. Make sure you do really well remembering which code is for what. Sometimes I want to smack our coders for screwing up the stupidest things.

I know its not the intent of your advice, but I find that comforting haha. The course is a bit more challenging than I anticipated and it's been stressing me out. I have a 95% so far and keep thinking thats fine for studying, but physicians won't like 5% of their claims being rejected.

The clusterfuck that is my job continues. To review, my current job is pt in finance. I was hired in to primarily help with billing, which got switched to a brand new department as of Jan 1. They're getting a bunch new custi as of July 1, do switching that to full time. I could apply for that freaking job, but I hate it, and fuck applying for the job I've been working the last year. Im supposed to transition to other accounting work once they hire and train someone.
Well, this brand new department obtained a brand new manager, promoted from another area about 3 months ago. So, I've sort of had 2 bosses for a while. My actual boss has been hands off pretty much from the start. The new other boss? quit as of today, announced today. Wtf? My actual boss, on vacation next week. This place seems to have a few peons working their asses off all the time, and the rest who have leisurely jobs and lots of vacation time. I don't know how they ever accomplish anything there, but they're good at patting themselves on the back!

TheHaitian - If your wife is looking to stay in academia, just know this is not the best time to be job hunting. A LOT of public universities are under hiring freezes right now. Private universities may be doing better, but I wouldn't count on it. And, if she is looking to stay in academia, are you prepared to relocate for HER job?
cktc - I understand you wanting your husband to take the offer, but given your own uncertainty, it might be best for him to stay. 13 weeks of severance right now takes him to the end of August. Going the other route takes him to the end of August + 10 weeks. Sure the payoff is better if he takes the deal now and lands a job before the end of August, but it's not if it takes him longer. Remember the rule of thumb for finding a new job is 1 month/$10k in yearly salary.
Lizard Queen - And after it seemed like it might improve Sorry it's going so poorly.

Thanks shanendoah. I hadn't considered the one month per $10k thing. He's in IT with a military background so I had been thinking he has a lot of options but with the current job market I suppose it could take even longer. He also thinks his current job will extend well past August. That is the contract end date but disentanglment could take a year. Hopefully the longer time line will allow him to find something he will enjoy more.

And that interview led to a 'meet the team' interview. This is taking a while but seems like a really good fit so far. So I'm excited and it doesn't bother me. This will be the first in person interview. With masks.

I'm a woman working in a man's field. I HATE shaking hands. Sometimes its a 'fight' and sometimes its limp fish. I never know what I'll get......Masks and no physical contact, an engineer's dream!

I think my interview went well. It's always so hard to tell, esp now with masks. But they liked my broad range of skills (I am a master of none!) So I am hoping they send me an offer. I really need a job! And this one looks fascinating. The drive is long but I can take transit for some of it.

"But they liked my broad range of skills (I am a master of none!)" I think that's important for engineers. I'm a retired EE.

EE scares me! I'm a manufacturing engineer with a lot of extra QC skill. In my job, it's not what I know, it's who I know and can con into helping me (which is easy).

We had a Manufacturing Engineering program at Drexel when I was there 1965 - 1970. It looked like a good mix of all the engineering disciplines without getting deeply into any one.

That's what I love about it. I get to know a high level of everything. So I get to spend a lot of time asking the specialists about thier jobs. But I'm not expected to be a specialist myself. And I seem to be able to always find a job (once I'm done panicking). Since everyone needs a manufacturing 'expert'.

So I applied to 3 corporate positions at the same organizations corporate office. I did not hear back... so not sure!
But I applied for 1 position with my current company and I heard back today. My interview is for tomorrow morning at 10:30 through FaceTime. Yep my first FaceTime interview... which kinda make sense since the corporate office is in N.C.
So the plus of that position: - Corporate - category manager (been wanting to go in that direction). - a good direction career wise - can lead to other positions / other doors at other companies or this one - out of retail life. - ex: the guy that would be my boss if I get it is working remotely from home this week thus the FaceTime interview. I need that kind of vibe in my life!
Con: - N.C. - it would require a move but since it is for current company I assume they would cover a good portion of the costs - would need to sign another contract when I am just getting out of one.
Not getting any hopes up. They have to interview everyone that applies so that means nothing really. I am too far away/removed from the corporate office to know if maybe they already have someone there in mind for the job etc. but it is the first interest I got since I mentioned actively getting out of retail. Will give it all I got.

He already had a candidate in mind for the position, this person has been working closely with them in a different position for the past 18 months, already familiar with the program and essentially can hit the ground running while he feels it will take someone like me a year to 18 months to get familiar with all their systems (aka he did not feel like training a new person... at least that is what I got). To soften the blow he mentions how they will have new positions opening up soon and ask me why did not apply for 2 other positions they had posted earlier 2-3 weeks ago. I don’t know dude, I work in the stores and contrary to the corporate office I don’t seat on my ass all day and get to surf the web and job postings. So yeah I missed those! So he said a few more positions will come up that I may apply for and to rethink if this is really what I want because I will go from having people reporting to me to no one reporting to me, no one to delegate the work to, seating at a computer all day, calling people, meetings, conferences, don’t get to go outside (duh I don’t get to go outside now... I could but I cannot remember when I did... I guess at the corporate office they got this idea at the retail stores we walk out all the store all day long to go enjoy the beautiful day outside). Oh well, the search continue. While he tried he failed at covering up the usual smugness I get from people working at the corporate office, that they are somewhat better than us and we couldn’t their job.

I don't know about thinking they re better. I worked in a corporate office for 15 years and grew to hate the feeling of being chained to my desk. Maybe because I was in the middle of a cub farm, but I hated feeling like I was a prisoner inside, especially in the summer. In the winter, I got to work in the dark, and left as the sun was going down. Since I didn't have a window, I barely got any natural light all day. Just trying to say that is freaking monotonous, but absolutely go for those other jobs to get out of the retail store. At least you'll get somewhat normal days and hours to work.

I fielded a 'cold call' LinkedIn message today, that I have a bunch of questions about. I'm hopefully going to be speaking with the guy tomorrow. I'm not actively looking for a new job, but...🤷♀️
I've posted enough about my background, I'm okay sharing this rn. I am a career pharma engineer. I spent 14y building manufacturing plants, and moved into a QA role 5y ago. I've been told by a number of executives that I'm a unicorn for my particular skill set.
today's cold call was incredibly flattering, mentioned a mutual contact that apparently said I walk on water, and that after reviewing my LinkedIn profile that this client of theirs definitely wanted to talk with me. guess I'll find out more tomorrow.

I haven't heard a yay or nay from my interview on Monday. HR called on Tuesday to see what I made at my last job (is it bad I had to guess? I know within about $10,000). Aaaaand about what did i want from this job. I really hate those questions. And now I'm still waiting.....how long should i wait before i reach out to HR?

I would give it a week since last contact, so Tuesday? I realize that's as arbitrary as anything else, but that's been my general rule of thumb.
some/all of this detail might go poof, as I think out loud. please don't quote. thanks!
so, my call was pretty interesting. guy is a recruiter that's working with a biotech company to staff a major buildout, and the desired skill set he read off was basically a 10s summary of my varied experience - they are looking for the 'unicorn' quality engineer w/capital project experience. oh, and international b/c this company is in Iceland. it wasn't clear whether this would have to be a relocation or not, or if I can work remotely and travel as needed, but this is a very senior position and not as hands-on as other similar projects I've worked on over my career. he said that my name came highly recommended from a mutual contact (I am so curious who...) and that the client was interested in pursuing me after hearing about what I have in my LinkedIn profile.
I'm definitely interested in hearing some more about it, but need the weekend to wrap my brain around these possibilities. he sent over the job description, I need to update and send back my resume, and I want to spend the weekend looking up the company and figuring out what I want to ask for in terms of flexibility if I decide to go for this. if I can work remotely and travel as needed, I can absolutely go back to the beach. but how much travel will I be looking at? lots of questions, for sure.

Plymouth is really touristy downtown, so I think finding a little cottage near one of the town beaches could work. I don't need that much space...

chiver78 - If they will relocate you to Iceland, I would seriously consider it. We have friends there now, thanks to a job relocation. Their cat did have to spend time in quarantine after the move, but beyond that, they've been incredibly happy with the change. (His job. She freelances/works from home.)
