I couldn't tell whether he helped folks decide which particular chartreuse (the yellowy one or the bluey one) went with the purple (the reddy one or the blacky one) or if he could look at a picture of a room or a house exterior and put several color schemes together. I need help deciding on the exterior color for my house. I *think* I have decided to go with grey, but a light grey. Not purply light grey or bluey light grey, but a pure light grey. Hah!! Just try and find that color -- I swear it doesn't exist. Then I think I want to go with blue doors -- not royal blue, not light blue, but a deeper blue that isn't navy. The whole problem is that one cannot simply go get a gray or a blue or a green paint anymore. The choices in paint colors are staggering. Why do we need so many freaking choices?? Sure, there are folks who are supporting themselves and keeping themselves off of the welfare rolls by inventing these colors. But, I'm not sure we really need to have a sidewalk gray and a november sky. ((Steps off the soapbox.)) Next?

In the painst section at Home Depot or the like, there will be some booklets in the paint chips that will have preselected color combinations. They'll even have pictures of houses and rooms painted in the selected colors. I'd find some that you like in there. I know that it's still not easy, but a great way to sort through all the different variations of shades. I start with the dominant color that I want and pick the shade variation I like best and go from there. Now that I'm trying to explain it, I guess it can be pretty complicated, and I probably drove my DH nuts with it. For my bathroom, I picked shades off of the accessories I bought to use in there.

Random, seemingly irrelevant, posts like that are a dime a dozen around here. It's how we roll. No need to apologize. See, we didn't even flinch. (J/K on the "new here" part -- you're a veteran)

Our exterior was white with white trim original to the house. When I needed to paint, I thought I wanted a grey. That's when the color consultant educated me on the countless shades of grey (yup, before the books and movie) and how the natural light based on the direction our home faced would impact the grey. Instead, she pointed me to the brick on the house and we extracted a great clay/tan color that really complemented the brick and we then did a nice trim color and accent color for the door and shutters. I was also replacing the roof at the same time and I incorporated that into the consult. I had many people actually stop at the house after it was done to let me know how much they liked it. We kept in touch with the previous owners who moved to a mountain town here and we often exchanged letters and pictures. I sent them pictures of the house after it was done and they raved about it as well.
For the interior colors, again she educated me about natural versus artificial lighting in rooms and the impact wall color can have in a room, such as the bathroom. Her consult went so far as to help me consider colors that wouldn't impact my makeup application once I stepped out of the bathroom into natural lights. I mean it sincerely, it was money very well spent.

Don't let people tell you that you don't need a/c. You do, especially if you have a two story house. Lived without a/c until my last 5 years there. I'm ok with the no A/C as long as you have a whole house attic fan. Colorado cools off enough at night that you just open all the windows & run the fan starting around 6. If you work a standard schedule, then you are rarely home for the midday heat. And if you have a pool, then you hop in it on particularly hot days. Or we have a local spray playground that we stop at if we get hot on a weekend.
The only time the attic fan was useless was during the fires. But even not running it the smoke was seeping into the house & we just left town for a few days.
Depends on your body. I could not sleep in 2nd story bedrooms when it was hot and I had no a/c. House did not have a whole house fan either. Fort Collins house did have a whole house fan and it was a little more tolerable. We will have to agree to disagree as I would not live there again without a/c.

I'm a bit jealous. A relative of mine lived in Colorado for years, & LOVED it there.
BTW, I'm glad to see the family dog already found a job there...

A couple weeks ago we had our house reroofed. Of course, the color choice had to match the bricks. The one we chose is not available in this area. WTF. The second choice also worked.
When we replaced the front door, DH wanted a color. I told him to pick it. It's white like the trim. I wanted a fancier door but a door is a door as long as it keeps the cold out. Our fancy wood door just leaked too much.

I have a traditional full Cape with charcoal grey shingles. It is currently white, with black shutters, and "cottage red" doors (almost burgundy). I think that might be too predictable, but it does work well with the style of the house. I considered going red (schoolhouse or barn red) with white trim, black shutters and a black door. But the front of my house faces south and is in the sun ALL day. I figured the inevitable fading would bug the heck out of me and cost too much $$$ to maintain. So, I thought a soft grey would hold up in the sun and change it up just a bit from the white. Or, I could do bright orange or rainbow-colored splatter to really change it up.

What about yellow? That might be more of a colonial than cape color though. Is that a thing or did I just make that up? ETA - this kind of yellow is what I like

How about this, kind of a nice bold, medium blue. If this is the color of your other neighbor's house, well, I give up!

Next door neighbor on the other side's Cape is a cedar shingle Ina walnutty stain. I like the blue. But, will it fade in the sun? I don't want to deal with fading. I want to finish this freaking repair-project-from-hell-that-I-wouldn't-wish-on-my-worst-enemies and move on. Until I have to repaint anyways in 5 years or so.

Didn't Dark say he had a tile roof? What color is that roof? Better pressure wash that as well. I didn't go with a tile roof in Florida because that's a once a year mess.

When I built the first house in Florida I went with a grey. Found a house with the grey I liked and asked the owners what shade it was. They weren't in my neighborhood so they didn't care. It faded big time but I didn't realize it until we tried to paint an area again. Built in 1989, repainted whole house in 1997. But Dark doesn't care if it fades because he'll be gone.

So, sort of an orange color. Very common. Should be easy to get a paint color that goes well. Shoot, he's probably already got it painted by now!

We haven't even started picking paint colors yet. Focused on getting the bathroom work done first, and sprucing up the landscaping. I think the grass in the front and side yard may be a lost cause at this point. Might have to turn the whole thing and start with fresh seed or sod. Stupid drought and hot summer. We're finally going to do something more permanent about the little strip between the privacy fence and sidewalk too. I normally go knock the weeds down a couple times year but we've never covered it in gravel or mulch. Thinking we'll finally do it this time. You might want to look into spraying your yard green. I am not kidding. If your house is going to sell quickly once you list it, you don't need the yard to look great for a long period of time. A week or two worth of nice green yard can be spraying on and it looks good. Probably for a lot less than new sod.

I'd paint first. So you don't get paint spills on the fresh mulch or whatever. But I'm not noted for being a tidy painter. Better than my DH, yes. (he'd admit it too)

Funny you should mention that Archie, I was eyeballing some yard pigment at the hardware store just yesterday. I think the grass is too patchy for it though. There would be bare spots that would just be painted dirt. It's finally cooling off though, and we're supposed to get some rain this fall. If I put in fresh seed it should be looking thick and lush by the end of next month. Way cheaper than new sod too. Painted dirt is fine. Just needs to looks green.

I'll see if I can find anything similar next time I'm at the store.

My DH just seeds over the top to fill in bare spots. (We have too much shade.)
