MU, in PA, the legislature was thinking of outlawing them due to environmental concerns. Unfortunately those that don't care about the environment have let the bill languish. Don't count on their elimination too soon! I would rather see the paper bags, or a bring your own bag system.

As long as 25 years ago when I lived in Germany, you either brought your own bags or toted your groceries home in your pockets. It only had to happen to me once before I made sure that I went to the market with my own cloth bags!

Not only can the reusable bags harbour bacteria, many of them are made with lead paint and come from China.
(This isn't like YM where you're going to make me cite my source is it? I read it in the WSJ or the NYT or the Boston Globe about two months ago.)
I've used the same bags for about 3 years. Every so often I throw them in the wash. Mostly I just don't worry about it.
We never seem to get food poisoning or stomach bugs.

It's been a while since I've done that also Rick. So if you change your name to STD we will know why. ;D Disclaimer: This has nothing to do with TD's current relationship nor does it imply he is unfaithful.

Just to sound like the voice of sanity here, the handles on the plastic bags rip if packed with heavy items. Doubling them means more waste. The cloth bags usually have handles that are made from a strong fabric that won't tear. And almost all cloth bags are machine-washable. If they're the shiny kind, the easiest way to clean them is to hand-wash with detergent/bleach and hang to dry. This will get rid of most bacteria if you're really that concerned about it.
[ETA: The WIR women would be proud - I bought some sturdy canvas fabrics and made my own]

I usually bring my own bags, but every once in awhile I will get the plastic because I use them in my bathroom trashcans.
I don't worry about bacteria in them. I don't plan on licking the bags....and I was all produce before I use it...I can't imagaine what I would be putting directly in my mouth from the bags....

As long as 25 years ago when I lived in Germany, you either brought your own bags or toted your groceries home in your pockets. It only had to happen to me once before I made sure that I went to the market with my own cloth bags! in Ireland about 10 years ago, if you went in without your own bags, you could purchase plastic bags for 15 cents each. sort of a happy medium between outlawing completely and the ever-present plastic bags we have now. I get a stinkeye at some grocery stores when I ask for paper sometimes. fwiw, I re-use both paper and plastic bags. I just ask for whatever is low in my stash.

I get paper bags every so often so I have a supply of wrapping paper when I mail something. They work well.

So line your canvas reuseable bag with a regular trash bag. Go get your groceries, when you get home use that trash bag for your garbage can. Use a new one next trip. Rinse and repeat.
