My husband is reluctant to commit to us NOT homeschooling, even though I'd be the one doing most of it. I am quite sure that we will be supplementing our son's education at home, maybe to a high degree. I'm just antisocial/socially anxious enough that I really want him to have a structured environment to interact with other people, because I don't want to make him a hermit like me. I'm content at this point to leave options open and say we'll work with what fits in our lives. Also, I bought Ghirardelli brownie mix and Talenti chocolate brownie gelato, so I think I'm set on chocolate. And, YAY, 10! yummmmm.......Talenti! I love the vanilla bean, topped with strawberries and slivered almonds. <drool> I think I know what I'm having for dinner now lol..... sent from my electronic distraction

@hickle we are working hard here. The least you can do is show some appreciation for our brilliance and efforts on your behalf. It kind of got off topic, . I miss the days when I could ask about the economy or money or something in the news about the economy and that would get a lot of replies. I asked about Canada being in a recession and how that would or could affect US, and it got one reply. The one about gold did not do much better. Thank you for all the answers on how to make a thread popular.

Name calling directly is still against CoC right? Someone is acting rather female doggy right now. Yea, well I get that way when there's no chocolate or wine available. Since I won't be home for three more hours I'm pretty much like... (BTW - I didn't technically call anyone anything. I believe I used an adjective, not a noun so ).

You guys remember those old screen doors? They didn't have a handle on them....just a wood frame. It had a hook and eye type of latch on the top? Not sure why. A toddler could have broken it open if they wanted to. I think it was to keep all of us grandkids outside in the summer. I totally remember those. there was one at the beach house where I spent most of my summers as a kid. the latch at the top was a piece of metal that would catch between two little roller wheels. that is one sound that immediately brings me back to that time and place - the sound of a door like that closing. and sorry I haven't been around much lately......i just started a new job and my monitor faces the open hallway. hope y'all are doing well! oh, and CL - for the last damn time, it's TONIC! sent from my electronic distraction Dadgum Yankees, thinking all wrong and stuff. It's COKE!!!

And, as ❤ mollymouser ❤ likes to say, not the yummy kind with nuts and flavor. No, I have the bare bones basic stuff with almost zero added sugar (which in all honesty is surprising tasty with almond-coconut milk). (In high pitched whiney voice) Moooommmmm - I don't wanna be healthy right now...

It took me until this year to get a job that paid as well as I had. I had all kinds of money problems along with some personal problems and I did not handle it well. I have a good job now and am worried. I do not want to go through all that again. I am not sure what to do. I go to some places that have a more pessimistic outlook and I need a place to get ideas to temper those with. You are right though, this is not the place it was. I guess for better or worse. At least we still have you and Laterbloomer so all is not lost.

I was talking about someone who may or may not have something with lots and lots of butter.

Woof? I'm leaving out that I ate only half the bagel, and half of my plate is filled with cauliflower and carrots, so that I avoid filling up on crap. Those details are not as fun to share.

I'm eating my carrots now. Not sure why because I leave work in 17 minutes. But MPL made me think - I DVR'd the 1933 version of King Kong the other day. Maybe I'll make popcorn w/ butter and watch it with the kids on Friday night when it won't matter if they stay up late or have nightmares!
And drifting off topic is another way that threads move beyond a couple of pages. You didn't say you wanted a 10 page thread that stayed on topic!

@hickle - sounds like you're referring to the days when the forums were hosted by MSN. At that time, the membership was more diverse and fluid. Lots of new blood came in from MSN articles, and being on a major site like that also made us easy for people searching for money forums to find. Now we're privately hosted. We don't have any major authors referring to the boards and directing traffic our way. So we have also really segregated. You might actually get more traction on what the recession in Canada would mean to the US on the Politics board. A lot of those posters don't come to YM, and a lot of YM posters don't spend a lot of time there.
We all miss the influx of new blood. For a lot of the long standing posters, I have a pretty good idea of what they are going to think on any given situation. I can predict fairly well who is going to come down on what side of what. That, and those of us who are still around and active don't have as many big money issues we need advice on. So that means threads that get a lot of traffic these days are ones where you can hit people's soap boxes, on multiple sides of an issue.
And on personal finance issues, most of us are on the same page (or at least in the same chapter), regardless of other beliefs where we may hold vastly different views. So when a "trainwreck" comes along, it gives us all a chance to pull out the advice we don't need to give each other anymore, and hope we're being helpful. We WANT to be helpful (see how hard we worked to get this thread to over 10 pages )
And remember, a LOT of the folks here will not dispense their wisdom RL. This is the only place they feel safe and comfortable talking about money, and again, we do WANT to talk about money, or at least, personal finance (many of us probably do not feel qualified to answer a question about the effect of a Canadian recession on the US). But there's not a whole lot of point in preaching to the choir, so there's not much to say until a "unbeliever" enters the forum.
People honestly looking for help often become our "converts" but the longest threads come from unrepentant unbelievers, because they are willing to argue back with us about why they just can not so what we suggest. And yeah, it makes for longer threads. And just like with reality television, the conflict generally makes for more entertaining threads.

I have to go get some blood drawn for my post op tomorrow. Then we are going to CostCo. Going to CostCo is an imperative, because my house is now out of BOTH chocolate and salty snacks.

I was around on the old msn boards. I am old Horatio. I need some encouragement and help with some money problems. Phrasing the questions is kind of a thing though, because I can feel kind of beaten on when my ideas are mocked. Though in my defense I never was looking for commands but just advice on my life and my situation and that had a lot to do with my values and not the answerer's values, if that makes sense. Thank you for the reply.

In some ways, the old site was more fun because we had some serious newbies to jump on. It takes a little sleuthing to find us here. In some ways it's nice because it's the "same old faces" as IHOP pointed out. But it was always amazing to find people with crazy (to me) budgets asking for help.

@hickle - I'll make you a promise, if I see a post from you asking for advice about your current situation, I will comment with the best I've got, or ask for more information if I think I need it. I'm not on on weekends at all and rarely evenings. So some days work is too busy for me to be on at all, and others (like really slow days when I'm working from home), I'm on a lot. That might mean I miss a thread, but I will do my best, if I see a thread from you, to say something.

Darn you Wisconsin Beth! Now I want tacos. But for us to have tacos, I would have to be the one to make tacos... Here's my taco discovery that has made the preparation of tacos much easier.
One day I looked in my cupboard and discovered a package of crispy taco shells that needed to be eaten. I had tomatoes and cheese. So far so good. I had ground beef, but it was frozen in a big block. Then I noticed I also had a can of chili. Light bulb moment!
Now I make tacos with chili instead of cooking ground beef with taco seasoning. As long as I have tomatoes and cheese and taco shells or tortillas, I can have tacos! Unless I want fish tacos. Fish tacos really need to be made with fish.
Of course, for those who turn up their noses at anything in a can, this is not useful information. I offer it, nevertheless, for any normal people who might want tacos without a lot of effort.

Chili tacos? That's heresy! Get a rope!
Ok that actually sounds a lot like a Frito pie so never mind and yum! I like tacos made with refried beans instead of beef, except we call them tostadas. Yum!

Did we mention not asking to have the thread locked when people are actually talking about the topic? We might have missed that point, our bad

I wanted alcohol earlier, but I need to drive yet, today, and I am overcautious. I don't bother with wine, though. It's going to be orange juice, whipped cream flavored vodka, and triple sec. I have the taste buds of a toddler.

I at a small container... Ok it wasn't that small, of cashew milk snicker doodle ice cream... Awesome! No gluten, no dairy, no coconut no soy... I'm glad they don't carry it close and it costs 5$ for the 2 cup container! I think that's a bargain oped. I've noticed in my area of CNJ that there is a disturbing trend to regular price the new interesting non dairy desserts around $7, $6.99 to be exact. Who the heck are these people who buy this?
I have been trying some new stuff from DF Mavens, or something like that. I have a feeling I missed the last chance to get it at the non $6.99 price for awhile. Whole Foods already dropped their sale price of 2 for $7 and Kings had it for the not so desireable price of $4.99. But they are so good. I really hope I do not buy one in August at $6.99, just because I am craving it. I have never had Amy's or other non dairy frozen desserts that do not go on sale. (Amy's seems to win lots of taste tests too. )
What was the brand?

Gay marriage.
Managed to lose another 'friendship' over this one I think.
She thinks its because I 'care that she is a conservative Christian and will base her beliefs on the bible and I can't be friends with someone like that..'
Can't seem to explain I don't give a care at all about that... but that since I know she is, she tells me ALL THE TIME she is, goes in to her beliefs all the time, and I have NEVER tried to change those beliefs, or even questioned them.... that maybe she could stop suggesting that her rights are being threatened, she can't say what she feels any more, she can't be a conservative Christian in this society... etc. etc... She can't be friends with you, because she is a conservative Christian. Its easier to blame you, than acknowledge the problem is with her. Because once she opens that door, she might have to acknowledge the problem with society and Christians is ... her. Can't let happen. How's she going to keep her martyr complex going after all?

Can someone explain to me how you keep all the details straight enough to actually catch people in the crap you guys do? (Hopes that is vague and specific enough all at once) I don't care enough to remember the details that well, it's just entertainment for me. Screen prints. I only really bother for P&M. Not worth it elsewhere generally.

I also bought Maui onion kettle cooked potato chips. I ate some with my bagel for breakfast. Nice, sounds good. I bought some thai food for dinner, because I did not want to cook after my painful crown appointment. Temp crown is in, unknown when I get the permanent one. Next week Tuesday?
In any event, I had mango chicken. Good, but so different from the Mall Thai mango chicken. The mango chicken in the Mall is breaded and reminds me more of General Tsao's chicken but only with Mango and well Thai spices. Tonight's Mango chicken is not breaded, and has lots of actual mango slices. Wonder how I will like the leftover's for tomorrow night's dinner at work?
