What are the main things a thread needs to get really popular here? Say more then 10 pages long.

What are the main things a thread needs to get really popular here? Say more then 10 pages long. A contentious topic with an OP that responds a lot.

1) Anyone doing something visibly stupid like buying a house when they have no money.
2) Any opportunity for people to brag about some aspect of their financial life. This can include a) the value of their house b) The value of their retirement c) how much they have in EF. An example of this would be "How much as your house appreciated in the last 10 years?"

An OP who will respond a lot, and will magically come up with more details as the thread goes on. Bonus points if those details kind of sort of contradict assumptions people made based on other posts.
On the flip side, just be a trainwreck for a year or more...then start any thread on any topic. You need to get a following where people see you started a thread and think "this is going to be good" before they even open the thread. It's predictable. There have been threads I've seen started and it's Friday afternoon, and while the thread is 4 posts long I know by the time I read it Monday morning it's going to be 50-60 pages just based on who started it.

I think the threads that fall into #2 tend to peter out around 4-5 pages... we just don't have enough posters to get much mileage out of something that is mostly people talking to themselves. I'd guess if you analyzed the 10+ page threads, most of the posts are from a fairly small group of posters going back and forth in a heated discussion. I'm betting most of the shorter threads have more unique posters than the super long ones So if you want to start a long thread, pick out a few posters who love to argue, try to figure out one of their shared hot button topics, and just throw it out there

IMO. the post has to be about something that impacts the vast majority. For instance, quite a few years ago I asked whether the speed limit should be 55mph across the entire country. Holy Batman - it had SO many "reads" it seemed like everyone was interested and quite a few had something to say about that.
Another way is to post about something that's so freaking bizarre, at first blush it can't possibly be true but after the thread develops and more clarifying details are added, it's so convoluted it couldn't possibly be a made up story.

Almost anything that's a hot-button issue or controversial - or a subject that's bound to have people on both sides of the fence in the discussion, where you can get different points of view, and why one person might have a different perspective than someone else.
Could be moral or ethical issues, etc.
The Assisted Suicide thread is a good example.

What are the main things a thread needs to get really popular here? Say more then 10 pages long. 1. A weird name of an old car that a person wants to be buried in and/or a Koi not Coy Pond. 2. A topic with posters that have champagne taste on a faucet water budget esp. with a live in BF/GF with children (optional) and a train wreck financial situation who want "advice". Along with excuses of why they can't do <<insert advice>> - repeatedly. 3. Presidential runs in progress and/or topics about which one sucks more and why. 4. A bat shit crazy family saga that has many branches of never ending stories. 5. Drama of any kind where people are taking pot shots at each other when they disagree or hit a nerve. 6. Gay/Lesbian/Transgender/Black/Gun/Abortion topics. 7. Circumcision: To do or not to do? discussions. 8. Working moms vs. stay-at-home moms. 9. Rape or anything about men vs. women. 10. Anybody on any kind of government assistance for any reason. Add in purchases of crab legs, manicures and name brand purses/clothes and tricked out SUVs and you could easily get to 20 pages if nobody locks the thread or attacks another poster and gets the thread nuked. Have fun, Hickle! I have to go now.

An op that asks for advice and then argues with everyone who gives advice.
Like doxie or hope.

Did I miss anything? There are a few on the Politics board that will guarantee a large turn out, although it generally ends up with dead horse flogging. One of them is climate change - real or a hoax?
