My non-smart phone is a pre-paid phone. I can pay yearly, $80 plus tax, or quarterly based on my original service date. One of my quarterly payments is due, and I am thinking yet again, its time to get a smart phone but cheap.
Long story short, my sales guy was possibly around half my age. He's sold me on the idea of getting this one Windows phone that would be $50 upfront and only $30/mo. for unlimited text & calls. No data, but you can buy in increments of $5 as needed. Sold! (Almost)
Since I know he's probably selling on commission I get his card and chat. As I was walking out I said, well it is a 14 year old BMW, do not be impressed.
As I drove away, I realized that wasn't terribly useful. How do I not impress young guys with stuff I have? Or should I be happy, that even though I am on food stamps, I can still impress some guys with my stuff?

I do not understand your post. What impressed the guy? Your car? Why do you not want to impress him? Was he flirty with you?
what happened to you that your life changed so much? Please ignore if too personal a question.

Opti, I think you missed typing a sentence. There's a disconnect between walking out to the car and it being an older BMW.

OMG, my evil twin misread the subject line. She didn't see the NOT in there. Please disregard the reply. Thought it read How to Impress Younger Guys

Or should I be happy, that even though I am on food stamps, I can still impress some guys with my stuff? It seems like you think you have two choices: 1. Try to change how other people think about your car. 2. Be happy that they are impressed by it. If one of the choices is be happy about something, and the other is futile, I am going to go with happy.

Jealous. Goats and chickens, you don't even need food stamps. Maybe they'd be impressed with the car anyway, because they don't know any better... or at least how marvelous it was, when in better condition.

I just find it weird/problematic/interesting, that many people see it so differently than I do.

They must have been chatting about BMWs. Dunno opti, you are very much a car person. Not expecting you to ever drive a unicorn Honda, or be happy about a lower grade of vehicle In the world of finance, car is a depreciating asset. But I am glad you have one that is staying running while you are working through difficult financial time. I hope you have more stability in life before the car starts being difficult.

I do have his card(business) and some of his monthly schedule on the back. Does it help I admired one of his sleeve tattoos? It had lines from a song we both like.
Should I ask him out to Panera, next door, after he's off work ... if I hmmm go back for the phone?!? (You buy, or I'll have the water is what's really in my budget. )

The car has been difficult for 7 years. Nevertheless, the regional ranking person at my job pointed out, it is still running. It is still reliable enough to get me to work in spite of all the things I can not fix now. And it does look better than most of the Hondas on the road of the same age.
Those are usually on their second or third owner and look it. I am the original buyer.

Half your age OPT4FT? No, just no. He's a sales guy. They flirt to get your business. He might buy you lunch before you buy the phone/plan, but I kind of doubt it for $30/month plan. You must be feeling better if you are going down this thought path Good for you!!!!

I do not understand your post. What impressed the guy? I can tell when guys are interested. Yes, it wasn't all about the car. But its easy for me to fixate on that. Your car? Why do you not want to impress him? I guess because I am no longer rich. I don't know when I'll make good money again... Was he flirty with you? Maybe. He did write down an awful lot of info for commission on one of the cheapest phones & plans they sell.what happened to you that your life changed so much? Please ignore if too personal a question. In 2003 I got laid off from the best paying job I ever had. In 12/2001, I took delivery of the BMW. It was a customized order.
I is sad now. Must go walk outside and be happy...

As a guy, the only 14 year old car I would be impressed/interested in is a MacLarenF1. Everything else is old. There is always hope in a younger relationship, it depends how you look at it from different perspective.

And DON'T be all crushed if it doesn't work out. FYI - If you ask someone to lunch, then etiquette says you pay; so be careful with that since it sounds like the budget can't handle it. Maybe walk in the park with water for drinks is better option right now? Or use this to hone your negotiation skillz & get the guy to ask you out for lunch!

I'm impressed or at least interested in people who have unique vehicles. The local cruise night includes everything from 1910 to current. New Porsches and Vettes to cars with all their papers custom ordered in the 1960s and 50s. Perhaps impressed is the wrong word. Intrigued, interested? I guess I'm fine with the latter and I do want to go out. Even if its just coffee or a stroll.
If I don't travel far, does not matter if it goes any further than that. HTH.

Its OK. I was. But I understand my reactions better after people posted.
FWIW, I think I would be more interested in the tall Indian guy who commented on my T-shirt. Whether he was flirting or not, IDK. Kyle is under 6' and in his 20s. Tall Indian guy? Late 20s?

One of the women I admire once said she's date anyone that was legal. Dropped all our jaws at Thanksgiving dinner except my good friend then in her 70s. This woman was in her 70s and debating on going out to the movies with a twenty-something.

I'm totally confused as well. Was he serving alcohol alongside 30/month cell phone plans? Bmw, sleeve tattoos, water at panera...what?

BMW, mine. Alas, no alcohol. Optimist sad.

I hate to burst your bubble, but being impressed with your car isn't the same thing as being so impressed with you that he is willing to bridge the age gap for more than a one-nighter.
DH has a 2006 BMW, and lots of my students are "impressed." They appreciate cars. It isn't flirting when they talk me up about what the car has and does.
If you are twice his age . . . 2 x 15 is 30 and illegal. 2 x 20 is 40 and he is looking for Mommy. 2 x 30 is 60 and he is looking for money.
Why are YOU interested?

I too am in the camp that -5 is as far as I would have interest in going. I married +10 and that was a GIANT mistake. Will never repeat that, so +5 is probably the max on the higher side. MJ2.0 IS MUCH SMARTER than me & already knew this!!
Of course I have a girl friend that is 55+ and there is a 35 year old chatting her up. They live in the same expensive town, and both have vacation property in the same place. So, appear to be of similar means and interests. Interestingly most of his friends are 50+ so maybe he's just more comfortable with that age group. She is worried about it, but likes him. I hope she at least tries a couple dates before dismissing it.
Its not for me as I don't think I could get out of my head that a person that age is almost same age as my kids . . . but to those who can do it; go for it.
I think I would want something more than a sales pitch 'chat-up' to decide someone is interested, but everyone has their own ways.
