I don't think so, just going from previous experience. We have always been able to save pretty well when we are both working. With 3 kids it will be different, but I don't think it will be different enough to change that. We need to figure out daycare and schedules for next year. But before she took her maternity leave we had about $20k in savings which was built up over time just by having a positive cash flow. So you are saying it cost $19,400 for her to take maternity leave? Had no idea maternity leave was so expensive. But bonding time with baby is priceless Hell yeah it is priceless..... not sure that calculation works. it actually cost $45,000 because that is the money she wasn't making during the time.

So. You spent about 19-20k in place of her 45k income. I think you'll be ok.

He's a cutie - so do your fatherly protective move and buy some life insurance to protect him. Seriously, I only pay $16 a month for mine so I don't understand why you won't buy it.

How is it crazy? You said you are running -$1550 each month. You have to borrow from your kids. You can't afford to pay off the credit card this month and have just a few months left of minimum payments in your savings account. There's no money for Starbucks or other luxuries unless your wife is going to start earning money NOW by babysitting or tutoring.

He has plenty in taxable accounts though...just doesn't want to cash them in. Actually, borrowing from the kids might be a good psychological spending check for his wife. "Look Dear, now we're taking from the kids!" Meanwhile keeping the real emergency fund tucked safely away.

Did some of the $20k go toward the cost of that very cool wooden tree house in the background?

So we were doing pretty well this month keeping costs down. I think we may have made it through without borrowing anything. But then I had to go tonight and crash the van up. The whole family was driving back home from meeting my SIL for dinner and I dozed off on the interstate. I was driving in the left lane and drifted left into the guardrail. Luckily the car stopped in the breakdown lane and everyone is ok. Kids took it really well. They got to sit in an ambulance, drive in a police car, went to a fire station, got coloring books and fire hats, drive in a tow truck. So they were pretty excited. I need to be more careful, though. I have driven a lot when I am tired and have always been fine, but obviously not this time.
So anyway, tow was $82, ticket for not maintaining proper lane is $132, deductible is $1000, we get $30 a day rental, so I assume we will have to pay some out of pocket.
Definitely scary to think how much worse it could have been though... need to get my shit together.

So glad everyone is ok. We all get wake up close calls some times. You learn from them, nothing else to do there. Count your blessings and make different choices next time.

I am glad every one is okay, but yeah, you absolutely cannot be driving when you are that tired. That is frightening!!!!!!

My kids want me to take them to Yellowstone the end of the month. My biggest worry is falling asleep at the wheel on a drive that long. I've done a lot of long out west trips, but always with another adult in the car to either swap driving or at least talk to. My first ex hated to drive and always let me, but he at least kept my brain engaged the entire time.

Yellowstone is fantastic & I am sure you can find someone to share the ride. I drove to the other side of it (because DD1 was living near it) on my own. That was a long, boring drive & I told DD I was never coming to see her again after that trip, so she better move closer The park was incredible, but I would definitely want someone with me on a drive that long! I do two 4 hour round trips each weekend & had to start asking DD2 to ride with me because I was getting really tired. I need someone talking at me or to share the driving with so I don't get too tired on the way back. There were a couple trips on my own where I stopped at rest areas & just closed my eyes for a while.

Oh, Archie, that's so scary. I'm glad your family is okay. How is your wife emotionally? I know I'd be upset.
I think you should take a few personal days. Get your shit together, asap.

He's 13 now and really wants to go back, but I keep saying maybe we should wait a few years until you're a driver too. It gets really dull when they're sitting in the back of the van watching movies or napping. It's about 17 hours or so. Ugh.

Glad everybody's OK.
If your kids are like mine, they'll never let you forget this. For the next 5-10 years, at the least opportune time, they'll bring it up. When meeting new friends or at a getting to know your teacher night... "hey, Daddy - remember the time when you crashed the car and we got to talk to the police officer?" It will be fantastic.
