Honestly, I wouldn't get offended at the term "retarted." I might think it unprofessional at work, but I wouldn't get offended.

There's no non-offensive use of the f-word either. I understand that - I was stating my disagreement with the idea that using the word "retarded" is the same as using the N word. There can be an acceptable, non-slang, non-offensive use for it, but that is not the same for the N word. People being okay with being addressed in that fashion doesn't take away from the fact that it is and always has been a derogatory term. JMO I hate the word retard as much as you hate the N word. Once you are personally affected by it, it becomes punch in the face worthy.

*chuckle* I'll definitely speak up, and have fairly often when I felt it necessary. Of course, I don't expect that to surprise anyone here ...

Words are just words until someone objects. I try to never say offensive things I wouldn't ever want to hurt anyone's feelings about things they can't control like race, gender, age or mental ability but the list changes so often I don't always keep up. The first time I heard the word retarded wasn't used any more was on a message board, I was surprised and might accidentally say it sometimes. I had a friend who had a son who had MD and was learning disabled but I met them in 1969 when he was retarded. I still think of him as retarded and if talking about him might say he was retarded then realize what I said and say that was when people were now he would be learning disabled. Nobody meant it as an insult any more than calling someone who was spastic, spastic, then kids start using it as an insult. We used to refer to people as Oriental like the rugs, mom did once and I told her we say Asian now. She didn't want to change her words but I told her we would be embarrassed by her like she was embarrassed by her mother, so mom switched. I think first let people know about the change without getting upset about things, we didn't all get the memo. When you don't work with special needs kids or know any you might not hear they changed the words.

I think that people are to worried about being too PC. The folks that star in Empire say the N word should be in their show because that it's real life. We have to be real people! I am so sick of fighting with hippocrites. We all have things that come out of our mouths. You can't me that you never say something that you perceive wrong and don't think twice about it! Why do you all think that you are better than the next person just you because you have money!! Do you see Durst going to prison You could be 1 step from there, but because you have bucks you can do no wrong!!!

Yes, I've called people out for words or ugly jokes they've said. But I prefer when the majority just give them "the look" that could kill and all goes quiet in judgmental silence. It's more effective that way.

I would stay quiet - too shy - too nice to fire back - also very rarely do I get offended - lastly that is pretty much everyday talk in my office work environment! during the first maybe two years I've worked here a Tech told his manager "fuck you asshole, you make such stupid ass decisions and expect us to follow them!" YEA! that was traumatizing! I've been with the company for 11 years now more recently within the past say 3 years (if not just last year) the spoiled kid said to a level 2 manager while he was using tape to tape the bottom of his shoe from falling off "just what the fuck are you doing dipshit!" WOW! I couldn't believe it! this happened in front of a small group returning from lunch! I'm trying to think what would set me off? but even if something was said to offend me. it would take me DAYS to think of a come back! LOL if someone in the office said Zaire you're such a stupid (N word)! oh that is funny! I just can't imagine that happening! but say it did? I don't see me getting offended. I would be SHOCKED!

Do you mean me? I feel like I'm in healthcare but I'm not! Retard here is used the way it should be used, to slow or stop growth. The emphasis is on the last syllable. Used as we kids used it, the emphasis was on the first syllable. Now that I actually think on it.

Slight update. I got an email apologizing and saying a better choice of word would be more suitable. And that he will be more careful in the future. So at least the apology is appropriate. I still don't tolerate ignorance as an excuse, but at least he had the good sense to realize he had stepped in the dog sh*t.

MJ : Direct quote, punctuation and spelling all his own.
"This so called Diatribe must have hit the wrong nerve. To that I apologize .
But after some thought . I have the following .
The point of the comment was not to abuse the mentally challenged. It was directed at the misguided use of the Meaningful Use Effort and its lack of relevance to radiation Oncology.
To read the whole peace only to "ZERO" in on the word "retardation" is unfortunate and reminds me of our politicians and the people that came up with the meaningful use.
If you concentrate on minutiae . You will never see the big picture. "

Yay, so he's basically calling something "retarded" and then saying I remind him of "retarded" people. Woot! Winner winner chicken dinner.

There's a joke out there about GOD having doctor envy as opposed to doctors thinking they're gods. I see enough doctors in the hospital chapel every day to know they don't all think it's due to them being perfect.

No. Most physicians I know, while egocentric maniacs, at least have the good sense to realize the word refers to a medical condition and is not to be used as a synonym with an idiotic behavior or stupidity.

Is the dude a surgeons? Surgeons think they are God. But Surgeons are the closest thing to playing God that we have in humanity. I mean, a car crash victim, a gun shot guy.... these lives are saved in the hands of Surgeons. So yeah, I don't blame Surgeons for thinking they are somewhat playing God Families of of these trauma victims should be praying to the Surgeons to save their lives, not God.

That's funny because if I were a surgeon, I'd be praying to GOD for help in these cases. No way should DH have survived this infection. He even "arrested" something I'm sure we weren't supposed to know but the nurse let it slip. But people coast to coast and border to border of various religions were praying their prayers and I know that helped right along with the miracles of modern medicine.
