Oklahoma lawmakers are trying to block funding for Advanced Placement U.S. history courses, saying the curriculum is not patriotic enough, as they aim to join others in halting a program designed to prepare top students for college.
This week, a bill to cut funding for Advanced Placement U.S. History courses in the state passed an Oklahoma House committee along party lines, with 11 Republican voting for the measure and 4 Democrats opposed.
"We don't want our tax dollars going to a test that undermines our history," Dan Fisher, a Republican lawmaker who authored the bill, said during committee debate.
Nearly 4,000 colleges and universities allow those who meet a certain score on AP tests to be given college credit. The tests, which cover a wide array of subjects, are also seen as advancing academic achievement and can help those who qualify for AP courses to be looked on favorably by college admissions boards.

I read that yesterday. Absolutely ridiculous.
We don't like it when Japan tries to rewrite their history, especially WWII related. We should speak out when some Americans wish to rewrite ours.

My DD earned a LOT of college credits through the AP program. Now we've got a group of idiots trying to dumb the program down. Brilliant!

a lot of history is not patriotic. that is an important fact to learn, if you have an interest in seeing things as they are.

High school history classes were never real deep into their subjects (my personal experience) Anything that broadens ones background helps in college (again, my personal experience) Advanced classes are good. (along with a great hunger for library books) Dates me a bit, not?

While this is bad... it could be worse... Instead of just defunding AP, they could be re-writing history like they want to do in Texas.

I thought they had come up with their own curriculum instead of the AP class, that required studying the ten commandments, some historical documents and some sermons.

I remember in my AP English class that we studied the sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" and it did make quite an impression on me. Namely that I was so thankful that I wasn't alive back then.

History may not be patriotic (at it's best it is apolitical- a very difficult bar, especially with recent history)
However imo it is patriotic to know your history- the good, the bad, and the ugly. How else are we going to do even better in the future?
I gotta say GOP, way to go. Not only do we not believe science, we don't need no stinkin' ejukashun. Yeah baby, you go! the GOP has an impossible straddle on this. they love to say that our best days are ahead of us, but they never tire of telling us how great things were before "...".

i think that teaching more Reagan is a good idea. particularly if you compare him to other right wing populists throughout the world. i am all for putting Bush in history classes, too. especially comparing the speeches laying out the case for going to war with the actual results of the war.

Google "texas school board rewrites history" for a plethora of links about it. I think we even had a thread or two about it here.

During a House Education and Workforce Committee proceeding on Wednesday to reauthorize the nation’s elementary and secondary education law, Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA) said, “Socrates trained Plato in on a rock and then Plato trained in Aristotle roughly speaking on a rock. So, huge funding is not necessary to achieve the greatest minds and the greatest intellects in history.”

Why do I think those responsible have misplaced the rock in their example? It is supposed to be what one sits on while the head is filled with great things. It is not supposed to take the place of the head.

To be fair, many republicans also want school choice which would allow students to go to schools that better fit their wants.

I want a 30-room mansion with a four-car garage even though I don't need one.

I perched my heinie upon what was purported to be that very rock. Not one scintilla of genius seeped through.

If you are, I agree that the federal government should get out of local education. If you mean something else, I do not understand your post.
