I would also agree that this household is portrayed as very tolerant for the times. Only on handpicked social issues. Isn't the whole point of the show that Hugh Boneville is fighting progress at every turn, and their lifestyle is going to be gone in the near future? Why would he all of a sudden have a progressive attitude on anything. He nearly shit himself when what-his-name wore a tux to dinner, but he is going to welcome a black boyfriend or whatever. Very carefully scripted to let us think we are getting a glimpse into how life was, without being totally offensive to our modern belief system.

But I think the point of Hugh's storyline is to watch him grow and progress over time to come to terms and accept the changing world around him. Which he has been doing over the last 4 years. And you will see even more growth and acceptance by the season finale.

So I was reading TV Guide yesterday and came across an article about Downton winning the SAG again this year for Best Ensemble in a Drama and there was as picture of the 4 ladies that attended. Joanne Froggatt (Anna), Sophie McShera (Daisy), Laura Carmichael (Edith) and Phyllis Logan (Mrs. Hughes) and OMG I didn't even recognize Phyllis Logan. Even after staring at it for 5 minutes I still didn't recognize her. She looks so much younger than what she portrays and the make up people should win an award! Anyway this is not the same picture but another one of the 4 of them.

When they take on the scopes trial, or get on-board with any of the now-disproven scientific theories, or even take on any of the topics of the day that aren't buzzwords or staples of today, then I will believe they are really telling the story of this guy's growth. It just seems preachy and awkward to me.

I don't know thyme I think they do a pretty good job of being true to the times. But it is fiction after all.

Why were Tony and MLF at Rose's wedding? Did she just need to get her friend count up?

My assumption is that they invite everyone of their peers or risk insulting them.

So Sunday is the season finale. Does anyone want to take a guess on the proposal and acceptance that will happen?
I have some more gossip but will wait until you all have seen the last one.

No people, I mean Carson + Hughes. He asked her if she wanted to invest in a cottage with him. Isn't that old timey talk for getting under the sheets and cuddling?

That's the Russian prince's name. Violet's boyfriend. Oh okay I get it thanks! So that was the guess to my question about a proposal and acceptance then. And the answer is no.

They already held hands last season, that must be 3rd base for Carson.

Violet and Prince Kuragin would be a good guess too but I don't think she has the guts to do it. She's too conservative. She'll just let him ridiculously compliment her for the rest of her life.

I don't think Violet will accept the Prince's offer. For one thing, the exact whereabouts of the princess is still unknown. If she were to accept, she would be a bigamist (if they married) or his illicit lover (if they didn't), and even if they were ignorant of the princess' fate, it would be against Violet's nature to be with another man unless all was proper. And even then, I think of her as a widow-for-life type.
As for Isobel and Lord Merton....whew, talk about toxic kids! I understand they miss their mum, but what a pair of badass bookends those two are! No class at all, not even to want their dear old dad to be happy.
Now, as for Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes...I dunno. I like the way Mr. Carson is delicately approaching things (the idea of the two of them buying a property together is so cute!).
I wonder if something will happen to keep Tom Branson from going to America. My guess is no, but you never know. Funny thing is, of all the men in Mary's life, he is probably a pretty good match for her in terms of integrity and personal courage. But no way it could happen. It would be too icky.
