Aren't we supposed to be talking about TV? How about that Downton? Love it!!! This is another show that I didn't start watching until the middle of season 3 so I ordered them all to get caught up. I can't wait to get my season 5 at the beginning of Feb.

I'm too cheap to buy the DVD so I watch it old school, as it airs. Then repeatedly on Netflix or wherever it ends up. (DH loves Downton like I love Sherlock)

I believe right now this is the show that is at the top of my current favorites list so I had to start a thread about it.
I have the first 4 seasons on DVD and will get the new 5th one in the beginning of February when it is released.
I spent the last 2 weekends rewatching seasons 1-4, for like the 5 time, to get caught up in the anticipation for the new one. No I don't watch them as they are shown on PBS. I am too impatient to do that so I preorder the new season because it has already been shown in the UK and they release it in the middle of them showing it here. So I spend a whole weekend watching the entire new season.
I think my only real complaint about this show is the seasons are way TOO short!!!
My favorite characters are Old Lady Grantham (Violet), Mrs. Patmore, Mrs. Hughes and Carson.
I was really disappointed that they killed off Sybil and Matthew in season 3.

My DH watches it repeatedly when it's available to stream. We didn't renew Amazon Prime recently and I think he's having withdrawals. I bet he's watched all the way through a dozen times by now. Since it is a short (ish) season, I will watch as they air, already goes by too fast for me. I love Old Lady Grantham, I want to be her when I get old.

I was disappointed by Sybil and Matthew also, but - the actors wanted "out" of their contracts. I don't think the writers would have chosen to kill them off, they didn't have a choice.
DH bought me the boxed set of Seasons 1-4 for Christmas . He has now watched every episode with me, and surprisingly has gotten into some of the characters. He is also both fascinated and bewildered by Edwardian manners, lol.
I agree that the "seasons" are too short. But I'm glad they've been renewed for a Season 6. We don't have cable or any streaming TV services, so our only choices to watch are DVD's and our two PBS stations.
Does anyone here know if and where I can get a "Team Servants" tee-shirt?

Have you checked the PBS store? Or Amazon? Every season is long compared to my beloved Sherlock

Every season is long compared to my beloved Sherlock I've checked both, with no luck . I thought I'd ask here because there are some pretty enterprising folks here who can find anything .

The Downton bug has bitten me. I watched a couple of shows but don't know what season. Friends even said I should watch because of English ties in the family tree. Yawn. Then, one snowy Sunday afternoon with zero to do, the Heritage Center had a showing of the premier of the 1st hour of the 5th season followed by a tea with Highclere Castle cups, coasters, tea and fancy cookies. People dressed in period clothing, had their photos taken with a Carson life-size cut out and the director of PBS opened to show. I gifted a friend with the coaster and 2 tea bags. She said one of her rellies in MN had been given a wardrobe of Victorian clothes from a drama group that could no longer use them. Swoon. The next week, I watched Downton Abby Revisited that had the highlights of the last several seasons and cleared up some relationship questions I had for both upstairs and downstairs. A local travel agent had information on a cruise on the QE2 to England with a high tea at the castle along with touring around England. Very spendy but a lot of people have signed on. For a certain dollar amount in donation, PBS would send all 5 seasons. I almost bit but held myself back. I like Dowager Grantham and how she keeps everyone appropriate as does Carson. I like Mary and hope Tony doesn't tarnish her after their trist. I also like the Bates. I have been to England and have rellies who either went to university and/or worked there. I have not signed on to FB for the current royals comings and goings; but I do have Prince Charles's webpage book marked. Somewhere I have a bookmarked page where there is a story about the various castles and 360 degree tours of some. For years, in the dark, cold winter days, I'd move into the castles and ramble around.

I didn't say I liked Tony. I just don't want Mary tarnished.
I think she should hook up with the footman that married (I don't know her name but she had a kid then died.) Of course, he doesn't have the correct pedigree.

Of course, he doesn't have the correct pedigree. Tom Branson . I think he exists to create drama through "class differences." He's already done that by marrying Sybil. I don't think Mary would ever consider marrying her sister's widower (the ick factor) . But I have been known to be wrong . . . from time to time .

The royals in RL were intermarrying within the family for generations. Prince Charles had to go way outside on a limb of the family tree in an attempt to clean up the blood line from intermarriage. Prince William went farther outside the royals. For Mary, I think it's more the class difference than the ick factor. We'll just have to brew up some tea, plate some biscuits and watch life unfold at Downton Abby.

Okay let me preface this by saying I read this last year at the beginning of season 4. Maggie Smith (Violet) and Elizabeth McGovern (Cora) talked about wanting to leave the series after the current season 5. It would be a big blow if Maggie leaves!! Elizabeth is okay but would not miss her as much.

She's correct, they do write her character as if she's unaware of the important stuff that goes on in her household. Playing someone sweet and clueless must get old.

LOL while Mary has grown on me a bit over the seasons I really could not stand her in the beginning. In one of the first couple of episodes I think she said something like "nobody wants to marry me" and my first thought was why would they you are such a Bitch!!

I really do like Anna and I really did like Bates a lot in the beginning but I felt they both became kind of bland after they got married. They do have their moments but not as good as they were. I do also really like Branson and Daisy. Oh and Shirley MacLaine is always a classic but OMG her eyebrows, hair and hats!!! Oh and I could do with out Rose, she can leave if she wants to.
Okay I guess that's enough for now but I will be back!

I'm glad this is the last season, because...haven't we seen just about every one of these plot lines before. Mary has sex outside of marriage - scandal! Mary is trying to figure out who to marry - again. Mr. Bates kills someone and is being investigated...again. Edith is a lonely shrew who is trying to get some love...still. Branson is fussing about politics (okay, the twist here - they brought in some random girl to do it for him.) The Dowager is f**ckin' with Isobel - just to prove where they both are on the social ladder. Robert Crawley is struggling with the changing times, and Carson is railing against those same changes - while Patmore is gently trying to bring him along. And Daisy is unhappy and trying to figure out what she should do with her life. I think to like this season, you have to be drawn to Rose, and I am not interested. A lame replacement for Sybil.

6th season. What year is it suppose to be? Don't we suffer a world-wide depression soon? Maybe season 6 will just be a dismantling of the whole damn thing. I'd love to see the whole abbey in a poverty-fueled state of disrepair. And then...everyone dies.
