And let's not blame the big bad companies because if the consumers were not out shopping, they wouldn't be open.
Midnight did not do the trick, 10 PM did not satisfy the craving, 8 PM last year was not enough... So Macy's is set to open this year at 6 PM on THANKSGIVING !!!
AWESOME!!!!!! Who got time for Black Friday, let's start on Thanksgiving!

I have no idea what you are talking about but if a store is open 24/7 it doesn't matter if they don't carry anything we want.

My family eats holiday dinners at 2pm. 6 pm store openings wouldn't creep into family time. So I may go shop then!

I stay as far away from the stores as possible the day after Thanksgiving (or on Thanksgiving in this case). I will actually be at a casino that day! Woo Hoo! So glad my dad moved to Vegas ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png)

Eventually Black Friday will be obsolete. It will be Black season or month, starting the day after Halloween. Hey, if consumers want to shop and spend money, why not, right? I will not be included in that group, but for those who enjoy it, good for them!

Pretty soon it will be right after Labor Day.

We have to take back roads home on Thanksgiving. We have to pass an outlet mall and people back up onto the freeway to try to get in. I don't get it. I'd much rather shop Cyber friday in my pj's.

On Fridays, I staff our cat rescue's Petco Adoption Center all day long. Thank goodness, that Petco store isn't located in a shopping mall. I may purchase something from that store on the Friday after Thanksgiving, but only because I'm there. And as for Thanksgiving ... I usually am one of the people who volunteer to go into the adoption center in the morning to help feed and take care of the cats who stay there ~ it takes us a couple of hours. There's always a few Petco employees who have to go in to feed birds, check on hamsters, etc.... so it's usually scheduled for 8-10am. But I'm glad that the store isn't open for business that day. As for Macy's opening at 6pm, I won't be shopping there no matter WHAT time they open.

We're going to Disneyland. It's not empty, but it's not crowded either . . . the wait in line is usually zero to 15-20 minutes tops. Then we stay home and do a big turkey dinner the next day when everyone is out killing themselves shopping ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/shocked.gif) .

I don't think it has anything to do with customers. I think the retailers want to be "one up" on the competition.
Over 10 years ago I worked for a manager who said someday all the retailers will be open 24 hours. I think he was right!

Oh geeeeeeeeez
DH gets up in time to be at JCPennys for the Mickey Mouse snow globe but that's it. He calls me and I meet him for breakfast and that's it.
We aren't into the big expensive stuff and don't want the excitement of the crowds.
For Thanksgiving this year we'll be at a local shelter preparing and serving the holiday meal with other church mates.

I will not be included in that group, but for those who enjoy it, good for them! I was at Target this past weekend and they already had out the Christmas decorations. It gets earlier every year. Pretty soon it will be right after Labor Day. Pfft... the local WalMart I was in on Saturday had all the Halloween 'picked over stuff' crammed to the back of 2 aisles... they had the Christmas Room aglow with holiday cheer and music and were in the process of setting up a whole promanant area with Christmas Crap infront of the left over Halloween stuff. I don't think there's anything special that you can buy for Thanksgiving...so it's a non-retail holiday. I suspect at some point Christmas Crap will be a year round section like the Shoe Department and Kids Clothes and Housewares.... (I was in Walmart because I needed 4 ounce canning jars - I had them delivered to a local Walmart for pickup. All the canning supplies are gone from the other stores and Walmart atleast has some available in store if you want to take a flat of jars with some of them broken or missing. The best way to get what you want is to order on-line and wait for it to be delivered. Then you just have to deal with the unhappy person in the 'pick up' area.

Over 10 years ago I worked for a manager who said someday all the retailers will be open 24 hours. I think he was right! The "one up" is definitely it. I worked for Macy's from 1999-2002, and we had lots of nights that we were open until 1 a.m. during the Christmas season when not a soul was in the store. It wasn't the consumer driving the opening.
Remember when stores were closed on Sundays? Somehow people survived. But then one by one the stores started opening, and now they all have to be open to compete.

Kind of off-topic, but this is supposedly the reason Indiana still doesn't allow Sunday alcohol sales. The independently-owned liquor store lobby is apparently quite powerful, and they claim that allowing Sunday sales would immediately put them out of business (since the liquor stores would be forced to open on Sunday since Wal-Mart, etc. would be selling alcohol).
I agree that it's about competition much more than about what the consumer wants.

I agree about the competition. Retailers know there are limited dollars at the mid-tier level. Each one wants to be first to get those limited dollars.
At 6pm, the Dallas Cowboys will still be playing. I'll be watching the game with my dad.
Last year, I ordered my DVD player and HDMI cables from Amazon on my phone. It was great.
I don't even like going to the grocery store the week of Thanksgiving.

I do shop via the internet, starting on Black Friday. This year, I guess it will be on T.G. morning. I usually wake up early so I can look around and see what the deals are. We got excellent deals on my Kindle Fire, a new fridge to replace our worn-out one, and a new tv for the L.R. because the old one had conked out. We saved hundreds of dollars - $ 150 on the tv, $ 80 on the Kindle Fire , and $ 450 on the french-door fridge.

I think in this case it is more on the retailer, not the consumer. I didn't read the article posted, but from what I am reading retailers are in a bit of trouble this year because consumers have less disposable income due to wages growth not keeping up with rising COL expenses so the expenditures for family holiday spending will be going down from last year. The only category where this isn't supposed to be true is for families with higher incomes who will be spending something like 2-3 times what the average family does. So it makes sense to me that Macy's is opening up earlier on Thanksgiving as this will give them more time to have people spend their allotted money in their store.
I've only done black friday shopping once in my life, and it wasn't enjoyable. By the time we got to the stores in mid/late morning things were pretty picked through and lines were long. I didn't feel that the deals were worth putting up with the extra inconvenience.

I feel your pain. Even though I gave up Thanksgiving and Christmas a decade ago (grocery worker), I'm pissed that someone else is losing those holidays. It's incredibly painful and angering to have someone who has the holiday off tell you that your workplace will be open for business on that day and you'll be working. They are basically telling you that your relationship with your family is being sacrificed for their profits.
