I have no desire to do TRU on thanksgiving again. Line up outside the store, plus line winding through most of the aisles to check out. No thank you! It didn't save me money overall anyway. I just ended up buying more toys that clutter up the house.

No way and I am super proud that Costco and Publix are staying closed. I wish other places would follow their lead.

I'm a practicing Christian and it saddens me that a day with religious significance to me has been turned into a gift grab, a profit center for the retailers, a major sales season for the manufacturers in China (where only state-sanctioned churches are legal) and a driver of tons of credit card debt. It's almost as if Christmas has been wrested out of our hands and morphed into "the holidays".
DH and I will do our usual drive to Myrtle Beach to visit family on Christmas. I'll send out Christmas Cards with hand-written letters to about 20 close friends and family. DH and I will do our annual outlet shopping in Myrtle Beach- mostly stocking up on jeans and underwear. We'll go to church on Christmas morning.
And we won't buy each othe gifts and will stay out of the malls and the big box stores.

it was a pagan holiday before it became a religious holiday. Well, I suppose I could look at it that way, but it wasn't until the Christians started giving gifts on that day that the rest of the world turned it into Gift Grab Day.

It's almost as if Christmas (& Hanukkah) has been wrested out of our hands and morphed into "the holidays". This (& bc if there's anything we want we've bought it) is why we do the exchange differently for our Jewish & Christian family ... everyone brings 10 identical items (I do gingerbread, sisters do cookies / biscotti / 1 makes soap) & 1 item goes into each bag at the door (saved from small purchases throughout the year). Then we all take home a mixed bag. Fun / inexpensive / cheap. We spend our time visiting not opening boxes. When I shop Black Friday it's to get something for me & each grandchild coming that day picks out $50 stuff. That's not a gift but winter clothes / accessories

I'm actually surprised Sundays are still sacred. The mall might actually re-claim some business if they opened before noon on Sundays.

Everything is open Sundays, except in those couple states where liquor stores aren't allowed to sell on Sundays. The south, and yes- no liquor on Sundays and no libraries on Sunday. The big box stores get all the business on Sundays.

There was a story on the local news yesterday - big mall is threatening to fine small stores that don't stay open for all of the hours the mall is open. Some of the smaller places were happy to stay closed on thanksgiving so employees could celebrate with their families, but the mall wants EVERYONE open, OR ELSE.

The mall has pulled this for years. There used to be a jewelry store that was owned by someone jewish. He wasn't open Friday nights, I think it was, and they fined him 4k. He paid it and finally just left for another area.

I think the fine suggested was $200 per hour they weren't open. Not only did they not want to make staff work on the holiday, they did not have enough staff to cover the extended hours. Can't afford the fine, can't afford the wages, esp if forced to pay overtime for long hours.
Then the tv station asked viewers to weigh in on FB/twitter. One brilliant viewer missed the point entirely: "I think the owners shouldn't make employees work on the holiday, but if they do, they should pay them holiday pay AND time & a half!"

Bravo to Costco for staying closed on Thanksgiving. I was quite pleased when I heard that.
