"Rape Culture" Claims Obscure True Dangers To Young Women

Young women today do not understand the fragility of civilization and the constant nearness of savage nature [Commentary: I would submit that very few Americans do, which is why we cannot admit we are in the midst of a war-- we cannot bring ourselves to acknowledge that there is a cohesive, well organized, in many instances state-funded, widespread, and well-orchestrated attack on civilization coming from radical islam.]

The disappearance of University of Virginia sophomore Hannah Graham two weeks ago is the latest in a long series of girls-gone-missing cases that often end tragically. A 32-year-old, 270-pound former football player who fled to Texas has been returned to Virginia and charged with “abduction with intent to defile.” At this date, Hannah’s fate and whereabouts remain unknown.

Wildly overblown claims about an epidemic of sexual assaults on American campuses are obscuring the true danger to young women, too often distracted by cellphones or iPods in public places: the ancient sex crime of abduction and murder. Despite hysterical propaganda about our “rape culture,” the majority of campus incidents being carelessly described as sexual assault are not felonious rape (involving force or drugs) but oafish hookup melodramas, arising from mixed signals and imprudence on both sides.

Colleges should stick to academics and stop their infantilizing supervision of students’ dating lives, an authoritarian intrusion that borders on violation of civil liberties. Real crimes should be reported to the police, not to haphazard and ill-trained campus grievance committees.

Too many young middleclass women, raised far from the urban streets, seem to expect adult life to be an extension of their comfortable, overprotected homes. But the world remains a wilderness. The price of women’s modern freedoms is personal responsibility for vigilance and self-defense.

i don't know much about Paglia, other than she thrives on controversy, and considers God man's "greatest idea".

but i fervently disagree with the opening sentence.  i think that young women in college (that is what she was referring to) figure "civilization" is either a bogus concept, or can take care of itself, and that "savage nature" is in the eye of the beholder.  in this case, a very jaundiced eye.

What, AgeOfEnlightenmentSCP, does this article have to do with radical Islam, pray tell? There is absolutely no connection here.

I figure young women today are individuals, just as they've always been. I also figure it's more than possible that said young women have equal "understanding" to that of Ms. Paglia and paul.

I'm trying to follow the logic that says a long series of girls gone missing cases (assumed abduction with intent to defile) are a sign that there is no rape culture on university campuses.

I disagree.

What puts women in danger is all the things that are called RAPE that aren't... and thus thinning out the anger/outcry when a real, actual, rape happens.

"rape culture" comes from doing just that.

What's not rape is when you regret it in the morning... but willingly (without being drugged, against your will) had it the night before.

ETA: or the outright false accusations (even if they are rare)... let's not forget what happened at Duke University a few years ago. False allegation filed, several men's reputations ruined, turned out to be a lie... and the false accuser never faced charges for her false accusations.

BS. It can't be that rare.. I personally know of two instances. One was my brother, the other was a former female friend that bragged about her false accusation years after she had done it (she did it before I knew her, and bragged about it several years later).

Maybe it's the people you hang around with. In 72 years on the planet, I know of no case of this, personally.

Well... I suppose I did have a choice in the female friend... I was kind of stuck with the brother through no choice of my own.

No I don't. But I do know of a woman that is missing, assumed abducted, defiled and murdered. She's in the OP. Apparently there has been a rash of these abductions lately. I wonder what is being done about it.

Actually the guy that has been arrested in her murder is linked to 2 other murders of women on campuses
