One of the many downsides of being sick is that it really spikes my blood sugars .... oh well. I went ahead and had my standard breakfast (original Fiber One, unsweetened vanilla Almond Breeze, and a protein shake with ice and a banana). By lunchtime, my blood sugars were still high, but not ridiculously/scary high. Lunch was chicken vegetable soup, with some sliced turkey on the side, and cooked greens: spinach, mustard greens, collard greens and turnip greens. I just tested my blood sugars and they're fine for before dinner (for me) ... so that's good. And I've been drinking tea all day long .... (which means I've been peeing all day long, LOL!)
My wonderful DH left town this morning ~ he was super sweet and I know he didn't want to leave me when I'm so sick (about 50 percent of the time I get a respiratory bug, I end up in the hospital) ... but duty calls. He should be back some time on Saturday.... work is taking him to two different states. Before he left this morning, he ran out to Trader Joes for me and picked up more chard, red peppers, and spinach/mustard/collard/turnip greeens. If leafy green veggies are my best weapon in the war against germs, I'm amply armed! (smile)
I will say this: I do love having a hot tub to relax in when I'm feeling under the weather! I was in it three times yesterday and again this morning. (happy sigh)

NOTE TO SELF: Stay away from idiots when I'm sick. Heck, stay away from idiots even when I'm NOT sick. A Facebook person just asked what my weekend plans were. Here's how the conversation went: Asker: What are your fun and exciting plans for the weekend? ME: coughing, coughing, and more coughingAsker: Come on, you should focus on the positive! ME: <silence as I wonder "why am I conversing with an idiot?">Asker: Come on, I am going to keep after you until you say something positive! ME: I have a nasty upper respiratory infection that's exacerbating my chronic/severe asthma and my goal, frankly, is to avoid the emergency room, lay low, drink lots of liquids, not get anyone else sick, and wait to feel better. Asker: That's not positive at all. You need to say something positive! ME. Holy crap. I'm working on strengthening my core. And enjoying Facebook's block feature. (That block feature is really pretty nifty!)I've decided that from now on, when I give people unsolicited advice about dealing with being sick, I'm going to just smile and say "Get plenty of rest, drink lots of liquid, eat plenty of garlic, and apply a liberal dose of sarcasm as frequently as needed." That's the ticket! My wonderful DH has been out of town this week. He travels a lot for work ( being a military pilot, after all.) I have one friend who spends a lot of time worrying about me when my wonderful DH is gone because she freaks out ( even in the day time) when she is alone in her house. ( Which is sort of mystifying to me, since she doesn't live in the crime central large City that I live in, but that's another story.) She just sent me a PM on Facebook, asking if I freak out an night when my wonderful DH is gone and I hear a noise.... don't I worry that it's a serial killer or something? Here was my response: "When I hear noises at night and my wonderful DH is gone, I take some small solace in the fact that my 6 cats are either (a) the most likely cause of the crashing sounds I hear and that no burglar could POSSIBLY make that much noise and (b) even if it IS a burglar, he will probably end up tripping over the cats which lurk in the dark like furry little bear traps of doom."
* * *
On an unrelated note, today we're under a PMS watch, but I fully expect it to be upgraded to a PMS warning later today. You should take cover and have plenty of chocolate on hand.

I'm still coughing .... but I'm hoping that things are improving. My pattern in the past is to have coughing and wheezing for weeks following a respiratory bug, so I'm definitely following my long-established pattern. My impressive feat of exercise today was walking once around the block with my wonderful DH. I coughed the entire time.... I'm not rushing to try THAT again anytime soon. But I need to stay off the bike until I get my lungs back to normal, and that's a bit frustrating for me. Still, I hate sitting here gasping for breath ... so I'll just bide my time and drink lots and lots and lots and LOTS of tea! At least I'm still eating my veggies, right? On a positive note, my eating has remained on track and my blood sugars are back where I'd like them to be ... so that's positive.

My wonderful DH drove me up out of the fog and smog into fresh air and sunshine this afternoon .... yay for an afternoon in the mountains! We had a delightful lunch (I had cocido ... Mexican beef soup with vegetables with EXTRA salsa) and waaaay too many tortilla chips! YUM!) I also picked up some interesting "vegetable" teas in a local health food store up there (they will either be disgusting or delightful). We also spent some time at a local nursery, watching birds and picking out some festive garden decor. Then we drove home ... back into the fog and smog.
DINNER TONIGHT: Lemon-herb tofu on a bed of steamed kaleidoscope chard, roasted delicata squash, zuchini "zoodles", and a salad: romaine, hearts of palm, red pepper, mushrooms and tomatoes! YUM!
Don't worry ... I'm faithfully taking my asthma meds (Singular and Advair) and I've got my fast-acting inhaler, too. And I plan to take another nice long soak in the hot tub tonight!

So I take my meds, try hot showers and hot tub soaks, stay super hydrated, and eat spicy foods. I've always got a nebulizer and liquid albuterol solution, too.

Molly, I just caught up on the last few pages of this thread. You are, as always, hilarious. Hilarious even when sick - that is quite a talent.
Try some of that Tea, Earl Grey, Hot. Or any hot caffeinated beverage, actually - I don't know why, but I read that it's good for asthmatics, and it has been helpful for me. (That's in addition to your medicines, not instead of them, of course.)
Also, I can't help but wonder, once your lifestyle changes get you to average or thin - will you even notice, or will you still be calling yourself a fat chick? Heck, maybe your thin already.

Also, I can't help but wonder, once your lifestyle changes get you to average or thin - will you even notice, or will you still be calling yourself a fat chick? Heck, maybe your thin already. I use fat as a simple descriptor, and not perjoratively ~ just so you know. And I take great solace in the fact that fat people are harder to kidnap. (grin) Frankly, I don't expect that my lifestyle changes will sufficiently overcome genetics and my health, my completely screwed up metabolism and endocrine system and my love of food to ever magically transform me to be anything other than a fabulous fat chick, though my goal really is to be a healthier fabulous fat chick. And I'm basing my health goals NOT on the number on a scale, but instead on the numbers on my cholesterol tests, my blood sugar number, and my blood pressure numbers. Besides, fabulous, fifty and fat is fantastically alliterative And right now, I'd really love to stop coughing so I can play outside and ride my new bike! I did some sweeping out front ( coughing) and brought in the trash cans ( coughing) and scrubbed some of the bird poop off the sidewalk ( coughing) ~ but none of that was as enjoyable and zooming around on my lime green hybrid. But I wanted to get in some activity/exercise, and tidying up out front seemed like a good idea for today (which is pretty grey and dreary here.) I would say that this is about all of the exercise and excitement for the day that I can handle ~ but I DID open the front door this morning because the neighbor's kitty was out front, meowing, and I wanted to say hello and make sure all is well. ( He is normally in our backyard, not our front yard and we do what we can to encourage him to enjoy our backyard ~ where there are no cars or dogs to cause him harm. We not only feed him, we open our enclosed patio for him in the winter so he sleeps on a heated bed!). To my great and utter surprise and horror, he darted INSIDE. And he's fast. Inside, where I live with two of the most neurotic cats on the face of the earth (siblings McIntosh and Megan) who HATE this kitty with a passion usually reserved for political figures or telemarketers. ( My other kitties are in the back of my house ... because Mac and Meg are too neurotic to share space with ANY cats!) Anyway, the chase was on. I chased Jack. McIntosh chased Jack. Finally, I ended up with BOTH of them locked in one room and was able to open the door to the backyard and shoo out Jack without McIntosh running out ( my kitties are indoor only) or any further yowling. EGADS! I spent the next 10 minutes coughing my head off and marveling at my level of stupidity, LOL! (Jack, in the meantime, is sleeping this off in his heated bed on the back patio. Mac is sleeping this off in his heated bed on the couch, and Megan is sleeping this off in her heated bed on top of the refrigerator. Clearly, I should be napping.)

I biked 13.5 miles today. (cough cough cough cough cough!) I am actually relieved that I will be working the next two days, so I have an excuse NOT to get on the bike again until Sunday, LOL! (An excuse other than I've been ridiculously sick and the air quality has sucked potato pancakes!) Suffice it to say, I love my nifty new lime green hybrid ~ that was our first ride together and I thought we did pretty well. I was a vision in lime ... lime bike, lime jacket, lime helmet, lime vest, lime and blue shoes....

I have learned it's best not to focus on the scale but on how I FEEL. If I'm giving my body the foods it needs to function at its best, I feel good and the weight loss is a side-benefit!!

I am still waiting for my cough to improve enough to bike some more. But I'm eating my veggies .... oh am I eating veggies! I even ate beets today. BEETS! LOL! There was also seaweed, cucumber, avocado, carrots, cucumber, collard greens, spinach, mustard greens, turnip greens, butternut squash, radishes, tomatoes, mushrooms, baby bok choy, garbanzo beans, kidney beans and soy nuts.
My blood sugars have been good, too.
And I've been using my time to do some decluttering and organizing.... which is always a good thing. And reading. I'm currently working my way through Health at Any Size by Linda Bacon and a great book called Intuitive Eating. I recommend them both.

We biked 17.5 miles this afternoon This was my second ride on my new hybrid, and I'm getting used to the differences between it and my beach cruiser (speeds, braking, handlebars, seat shape, seat height .... it's QUITE different!) I will say that being sick for two weeks (and still coughing, some) has taken its toll ... I was only able to bike once in the past 2 weeks, and my legs, but and lungs are all feeling the impact from recovery from illness. Still, it was nice to be outdoors and " back in the saddle" so to speak.
