They say the second kids are faster.
Oh shit. DH better not decide he has time to stop at the Kwik shop for a Mtn Dew this time!
Note to DQ: put Mountain Dew in hospital bag just to be safe. If you forget, we want pictures of you giving birth at the Quickie Mart

If we have a second (doubtful), hopefully my water breaks at the hospital or OB's office. 2 hours from water breaking at home until DD was born at the hospital. I only pushed maybe 15 minutes - we weren't really paying attention. I was shocked at the whole we drove to the hospital and walked up to L&, joked around, got into a hospital bed and nurse tells me I'm 9 cm already and if I feel like pushing, don't! My DH had to step out into the hall right before I started to push to call our parents - we thought we would have more time, but nope.
Thanks labor class for saying average first-time mom labor is 18 hours. Not for me.
At 6 weeks post-partum, I am 7 pounds away from my pre-pregnancy weight. I think an extra 2 pounds is residing in my boobs. my 2nd was 54 minutes from waking up at 1 am to my water breaking to baby in arms. was a little worried about the 3rd but he was 2.5 hours start to finish. Wow!!! Sent from my Nexus 7 using proboards

My first was born 4 hours after getting to the hopsital, 10-15 mins of pushing, his head size was off the charts. My second I was terrified of not making it to the hospital, so went there as soon as I thought I was having contractions. 3 hours after I got there my water broke and I felt like the head was out. The nurse shoved me over to the bed while saying "DON'T PUSH". I pushed once and she was out. There will be no third!

I love all the stories of nurses saying "Don't push!" With my first, the nurse said that. Maybe these nurses have never had children, but at that point in time not pushing is not an option.

With my 2nd I was completely in shock. My water breaking/her head being half out was such a forceful thing that I just froze, and I was standing in the middle of the room. I don't think there is anything that could have made me actually move from where I was standing. The nurse and my husband had to shove me over towards the bed. I was just dead weight.

My kids must have known not to mess with me from day one! I was admitted early with DS because my water broke. My OB went off and delivered two babies at another hospital waiting for me to go into labor. After more than 8 hours of me sitting around, she induced me. One nasty hour and a half later, only the half hour nasty because I got an epi, I had DS. DD I was admitted at 12:30 am, walked the halls for an hour, things got going then big time, she was born at 2:10 am. My girlfriends hated me! No epi for her.

You could have heard me yelling at him down the street when we turned to pull into the Kwik shop parking lot. I suppose I should be nice and say that at least he had the courtesy to ask me if I wanted anything. Yeah I want to go to the hospital!

Your husband might want to put some Dew in a cooler, because all the vending machines in our hospitals have "healthy" drinks only. So water and juice! And for snacks, it's granola bars and chips that are "baked." But, I'm still on your side! A stop to the Quickie Mart en route to the hospital while a woman is in labour is a capital offence in at least 48 states!

When I asked him WTF was he thinking he got a blank look on his face and said "What if I get thirsty?"
What if YOU get thirsty?! *I* am the one about to push a watermelon out a hole the size of a lemon, don't you talk to me about feeling thirsty!
I was so mad I was still fuming when we got to the hospital. The nurses were cracking up as I was explaining to them the indignity of it all.
My dad has already reminded me to put a case of Mtn Dew in the trunk of my car.
Then my brother got lost and went to the wrong hospital. My dad gets a phone call and I hear him say "We're at Creighton, why?" Apparently my brother had spent the last hour wandering around Mercy in Council Bluffs trying to find me. I suggested this time maybe he should ride with my parents.
My parents and some other people in the waiting area started a betting pool while I was in labor. There was another lady on the floor giving birth at the same time and bets were being taken on which kid would be born first. I lost by about 8 minutes.

But there's a lot of bad info out there from birthing to vaccines to using essential oils to treat your kids without consulting a doctor. The amount misinformation on the internet is amazing. I have an acquaintance that was using essential oils to treat her son's bipolar condition along with a lump that showed up in his neck. Turns out the lump was cancer & she waited months to get it checked because she felt the oils would help. She still thinks they help though because mentally he is doing well & is cancer-free at the moment (probably mostly due to the surgery & chemo, not the oils ). You mean everything you read on the internet is NOT true?!?!?! Shocker.

You mean everything you read on the internet is NOT true?!?!?!Of course not! It's only true if you found it using Google. Everybody knows that. Part of the problem with information related to pregnancy is that there are very very few controlled randomized studies. There are valid ethical concerns when doing studies involving pregnant women. For instance I've read green tea can increase risks of spina bifida. Ethically you cannot (and for good reason!) have one group of pregnant women drink a ton of green tea to see if it induces spina bifida. Pregnancy related studies tend to rely on data mining, patient testimony and animal studies. Data mining is valuable IF you have enough points to mine. Folic acid is a good example of how data mining can beneficial and provide definitive results. Patient testimony is not always that great because you are depending on people's recollections after the fact which aren't always 100% reliable. You also have to assume they aren't withholding any information or lying. Animal studies are very helpful but it's not the same thing as doing a trial involving actual people. So the general rule of thumb is to CYA for most things you should/should not do in regards to pregnancy because there's no way to be certain. It's a confusing mess to sort thru all that data and actually process what it means and I do this kind of stuff for a living! It's even harder for your average pregnant woman to really do an in-depth analysis of what the stats being tossed at her constantly really mean.

You guys are making my head hurt. If I ever have another baby, I'm going to feel like I need to re-enroll in college to research ALL THE THINGS.
The plan with Babybird was basically "wing it" and remains so to this day...

I'll fully admit that sometimes I have WAY too much time on my hands so I get on PubMed when I read things that piss me off or make me go WTF?
DH said I'm the only person he's ever met that thinks reading scientific articles is a good way to kill an afternoon.

The plan with Babybird was basically "wing it" and remains so to this day... I've got the same plan. Some people thought I was weird because I took no lamaze classes & the extent of my birth plan was "go to the hospital". Meh, the baby is coming out one way or another. Between my body just doing it's thing & the hospital staff that have done this hundreds of times, I didn't feel I needed an extensive amount of knowledge to have a baby.

It's the principal of the thing! I got this alternative parenting/childbirth magazine at the baby expo we attend and it made some grand claims. It ticked me off so I went lit digging. If you're going to claim certain things are fact you better be prepared for someone to call you out.
Same with a blog I read on breastfeeding. REALLY pissed me off because the paper she linked to admitted it had only found the most casual of links to what she was claiming and that upon further study even that link would probably not hold up.
Yet she was using it to tell moms how "evil" formula was and all the damage it does to your child. I wrote a VERY long post in her comments section and said she may want to consider reading what the research actually says before she links to it, she may end up with a reader who actually understand the paper and calls out her crap.

DH said I'm the only person he's ever met that thinks reading scientific articles is a good way to kill an afternoon. I'll join you I was just reading yesterday on SIDS and back vs. tummy sleep. From what I saw of the numbers there are a huge variety of risk factors for SIDS and they can't pinpoint the sleeping position as really being beneficial vs. making sure the bed is safe (no suffocation hazards), parents not smoking, proper prenatal care, and checkups to make sure the kid doesn't have an underlying health condition. The news makes it sound like sleeping on their tummies is a death sentence, yet in the NICU they often sleep on their tummies due to colic and reflux. I looked at the CDC and NIH websites and couldn't find any study that actually was able to isolate sleeping position as the cause. Most of them were relying on the reporting of the caregiver at the time of the incident too so it's only as good as someone's memory in a crisis situation (and maybe some of them felt like they had to say back since it's what's drilled into our heads?).

swamp, did you consider a VBAC for your second or did you pretty much know going in you'd have a second section? That's one (relatively minor) thing that bugs me about the prospect of a second kid. I hate the idea of going through another C-section but on the other hand if it's inevitable I'd just as soon skip the 30+ hours of labor I went through prior to having the first one. It's something I'll have to do a lot of thinking about beforehand. ETA: Also, do they reopen the original scar? Does it look a lot worse afterward? Because I was pretty impressed at how minimal and unnoticeable it looked immediately after the birth.

They did reopen the original scar. It's even less noticeable. The doc did a good job of prettying it up.

Firebird - at least with another section it will be planned, which is nice when you have another kid to juggle in the mix. I am taking a lot of comfort in planning baby J's eviction date just so we can prepare Aly and get her settled. Depends on how your previous surgery went, but most ladies I know that want to do a VBAC just have to wait for one year first. Several friends have been fine, but one just had a uterine rupture that almost resulted in mom & baby dying (she went to 42w because she insisted on VBAC and her doc wouldn't induce due to the risk of rupture). She would say it wasn't worth it, but thankfully they were able to save both of them - although baby spent several weeks in the NICU on cooling therapy and they still don't know if he has brain damage of some sort. That story probably wasn't helpful at all
