The Imaginary Friend thread got me to once more wondering about what goes on in other people's heads... I read this article a week or two ago... You Would Rather Endure Electric Shocks Than Sit Alone With Your Thoughts, Study Findstime.com/#2950919/alone-with-thoughts/Can you sit quietly without any kind of stuff around and amuse yourself for 15 minutes? I actually look forward to the 'quiet times' during the day when I can 'get away' for a while.

Literally sit and stare at a wall? Not sure I could do that for 15 minutes. Shocks could be fun.

Yes I can be alone and amuse myself for 15 minutes. I'm an introvert so I very much enjoy my alone time, it recharges my batteries for when I have to deal with people.
Oh wait do we have to sit completely still and stare at the wall? I couldn't do that, I am too ADD. I'd need a book or something during that 15 minutes.

What is this free time with nothing to do that you speak of?? Sounds interesting.

I don't think you need to have sit still and stare at the wall... maybe something more like sitting alone in a 'waiting room' that has broken TVs, no magazines, no other people AND you've left all your electronic distractions at home.

Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Introverts are fine with their own thoughts, extroverts crave external stimulation. I'm pretty sure they covered that in intro to psychology.

Yes, I can and do! When I get home from work, the gym, and take a shower I try to stretch is SILENCE for 15 minutes, if at all possible. However, if DH is home that is generally impossible as he is the loudest person I've ever known. I thoroughly enjoy silence whenever I can get it because it is so rare.
Oh, and Dark, I can't necessarily say it's "free time". It's more like, "I don't feel like doing anything" time even though there are always a million things to do.

Absolutely! I am a true introvert. Yeah, me too. I sometimes will escape to a bathroom stall at work and pull my sweatshirt over my head and just sit there for long stretches with as little external stimulation as possible. I could do that for a LONG time if I wasn't worried about my job.

Easily. However being an introvert sometimes electric shock treatment sounds more appealing than doing things in a group setting.

Yes, I could, and I do. I spend time alone all the time. And I'm fine with thinking--I'm usually making a mental list of what I need to do that night/weekend. I like to plan my vacations, coming up with different ideas, figuring out if I can save enough, how much things should cost, etc. However, if there was some kind of little shocker thingy sitting there, I'd play with it, whether I was alone with nothing else to do, or if there were people to talk to. What can I say? I'd be fascinated and I'm easily amused. Now, 15 minutes in a room with nothing but a sink and dirty dishes? Those things would stay untouched.

Yes, I enjoy my own company - LOL! I think I must be both an extrovert and an introvert. I enjoy being with people and socializing but on my own terms. There are other times when I want to be alone with my own thoughts. I like to think about my personal and financial goals, or just chill out by myself. Other times I can be the life of the party and make conversation with a tree stump. Then after a few hours I need alone time again. OMG! I just realized I am cat!!

I could do that for a LONG time if I wasn't worried about my job. I could sit for 15 minutes alone doing absolutely nothing if the alternative were working and having a bunch of external stimulation, stress, etc. That's primarily because I need 15 minutes to unwind though. That's different than catching someone during a normal time where they aren't stressed and asking them to just sit with their thoughts for 15 minutes. I'd be incredibly bored in that situation.

I keep forgetting there's so many YM introverts. and parents of small-ish children. For whom 15 minutes of "alone time" is a luxury.
I think the studies may have 'studied' the wrong age group... ie college students. I actually just heard a psychologist on the radio talking about how the new generation has an extremely difficult time with being alone. They have grown up in a world where technology allows them to be entertained 24/7. They have no idea what is like to actually have to entertain themselves. The psychologist was saying that kids actually need to experience boredom from time to time.

I do it all the time...usually its my imagination more than my thoughts (but maybe they mean the same thing?) I got my best ideas for my writing sitting alone with my thoughts (usually on the can - I don't know if that effects the thoughts any, though) I see other people that seem to be afraid to just not be plugged into some device at all times. When I go for walks, its just me and nature (neighborhood), but I see people walking and talking on their cell phones. Like they can't just go for a twenty minute walk without being able to communicate to someone. I weep for the future....

I almost posted something saying college age kids likely wouldn't remember a time without the internet and some may not even remember their parents not having cell phones. All of the technology at your fingertips and everything in your face 24/7 can't be good for people especially those who don't know anything else.

I can sit for 15 minutes alone with my thoughts. But sitting for 15 minutes and getting to shock the board posters of my choice might be a bit more ... fun.

The most disturbing thing I have seen lately though are entire families sitting in restaurants not saying a single word to one another because they are all on their electronic devices. Last week I met some friends for dinner and we noticed a family of 4 next to us and every single one of them was playing on either an ipad or their phone with zero interaction between the parents and the kids. Later I went to the restroom and passed another family doing the exact same thing. I thought it was kind of sad.

LOL, Zib.
I can easily be "alone with my thoughts" for a 15 minute stretch (probably even 30 minutes). I wouldn't classify myself as a a full-fledged introvert, but alone time is just as welcome to me as being with people or in the middle of the action - I do probably enjoy the alone time better.
And since I'm a wuss when it comes to pain, the electric shock alternative is off the table.
