Looking at the link again, I don't think it's fair that they didn't let the people play with the shocker thing first, or give them one freebie. I mean, if I was sitting there with the shocker thing, I'd have to try it at least once, just to see. So, I think the test would be more fair if they'd let people shock themselves once (if they want to try it), and THEN start the 15 minute timer. The original article (which I couldn't seem to find so I linked to the shorter one I did find) said that the participants did indeed get to try out the electric shock before the timer started. Also, the participants sat alone in a 'lab' or room - with no electronic devices (so no phone/music/TV). There were no books, or magazines, nothing to write with, etc. They were literally asked to stay in the room for 15 minutes with nothing to do.
I know I'd survive the 15 minutes without a shock or a problem... I'd most likely start by becoming 'bored' with the room via estimating it's size (number of ceiling tiles or floor tiles), maybe an attempt at guesstimating the 'color' on the walls (is that egg shell or Antique White or maybe a soft almond) and then I'd slip quietly and happily off into my own mind. I have a very active inner life.
On the same note, someone in my real life said they spent 'waiting' time learning the Alphabet backwards. I thought that was interesting and attempted it during a meeting at work (me and 150 other employees for the bi annual review of our employers policies.) I had the hardest time focusing and figuring out the best way to do it... but did manage to get the zyxwvutsrq part down pat. I got hung up reversisng lmnop . I've got a ways to go yet. It was entertaining to work on this 'problem' without pen/paper or an electronic device -- and the meeting flew right by!

Yes, I can sit alone with my thoughts. I do some of my best thinking in the shower! Moms need some quiet time, ya know...
