First of all - I'd love to see the pics you are talking about it And second of all - I have no style. I am still crazy fat from having all those damn kids, so I still wear maternity shirts and my mom's pants But!! Once I loose the weight, I am going to start a thread on fashion and suggestions on what is "in" and what is not to get general idea what I can keep from my old clothes. Hopefully, the board is still around by the time I am ready. I've never been overweight, so please forgive me if I'm overstepping. I don't know what "crazy fat" is exactly, but I don't think women should deny themselves nice clothes just because they're not at the weight they want to be at. I do understand not buying an extensive wardrobe when the goal is to lose weight. My Mom has been a big woman all my life and I'd want to punch anybody that called her fat or made any derogatory comment about her weight in my presence, so maybe I'm a little sensitive about overweight women, how they feel about themselves and how the world sees them.

Mostly long form fitted skirts with a form fitting top. I'm slim, but I can't get away with that. I don't really have a waist. A lot of ladies mentioned skirts and dresses. I only wear them in the summer and even then, it's not often. Something I've been wanting to work on. Meaning, I've bought some, but I don't wear them.

You are not overstepping at all. I am 5'1 and for the most of my adult life have been around 120-125lbs. I am now about 152. to me that's CRAZY FAT. I don't want to buy anything bc I just CAN'T stay at the weight I am at. I don't actually feel bad about myself at all (lord knows I have enough self-esteem to sell it), but I am also cheap and just can't bring myself to spend money on something that, hopefully, I won't need for very long. Also, I wonder if I would still be able to wear some of the stuff I have from before getting fat. And if that's the case, there is even more reason not to buy anything, you know?

That's a lot for someone short, I know. Is it health related? Hormonal?

I call my look Jeep chic, skinny jeans, tank tops, flip flops and hair up on my head. I wear a lot of flannels, thermals, wool sweaters and ugg type boots when it's cold.

As I read these posts, it's clear that I really am all over the place with what I buy and what I like. I've seen so many posts that make me think "yes, I like that too" and it's all completely different. I think I just figured out the root of one of my closet issues. I have a lot of odd pieces and shoes that I really like, but don't really go with anything else I have. Most of those odd pieces have some sort of flair and I don't complete the outfit when I buy them. I don't know if I need to just pick a "style" and go with it or just work on completing the outfits and keep the variety. This thread has been a lot of fun. Thanks for indulging me!

@sroo4, I find it easier to match other colors with Navy. I have 2 or 3 pairs of navy slacks or skirts/suits that I can match pretty much any color with. From pastel pinks/blues, teal greens, red, yellow, white, purple, lilac, even gray, etc - than I can to black - or brown (but I'm not a fan of brown anything).
Navy is the easiest color to coordinate other colors (or even patterns) into.
And all you need is black shoes - black shoes don't go with brown, but they do with Navy - and most other colors.

Miss Margarita, I appreciate the idea but I've seen enough shoe threads to know not to post any pictures. :-)

My personal style is mostly casual. Seriously, how many moms dress up when they're driving their kids around, or stopping at the nursing home for a visit, or running errands? I've told DD once she's done with college, her mother is going to get some nicer clothes with the money we save from NOT helping pay her tuition.
Midwesterners are known to choose comfort over fashion (esp. in the Winter). I've got a reputation to uphold!

Seriously lacking. I'm always colder than everyone else, so lots of layers in terms of blazers, cardigans, etc. Nothing that has to be dry cleaned. Generally black pants as the fax or copier tends to blow up and explode toner everywhere if I try to wear lighter colored pants.

The older you are and the more kids later, the harder it is to lose the weight. BTDT.

I will tell you what scared me into getting serious finally about weight loss. Having my doctor tell me what meds I was going to have to take because I was pushing 130 pounds at 5'0 and it was causing health issues and then having my mom die from an unecessary surgery on her knees caused simply by being overweight.

I dress in classic "butch" style. Jeans and a t- shirt, sometime flannel and patterned button down shirts. I wear cowboy boots every day (and have for 20 years). Oh, was this supposed to be just for women?

I've seen her and I wouldn't describe her as fat at all, so yes we all have different definitions. Also I would have guessed you were 140.

I think I've always been vain enough, and I do want to loose weight for vanity reasons also, but I never thought I would actually FEEL the weight. Like it's hard for me to get off the floor! WTF, you know? I am not 90 yrs old. And while Yogii is very sweet to say that i don't look fat, I really do, I might just hide it well.

I am a big believer in dressing for your body type, regardless of what is trendy. I like trendy pieces once in a while, but remember when those pouf skirts/dresses were in style? I tried one on and looked absolutely terrible in it.
I think you should try on a variety of styles of dresses and skirts and see what works for your body type. Once you figure that out, shopping should get easier.
eta: I have a "plus size" friend who looks fabulous all the time and has tons of style.

I've heard a million times "you're slim, you can wear anything you want to". That's so not true. There are some slim women that still have curves, I'm not one of them. I have a good idea of what cuts of clothing work well for me and what's going to look awful, it's getting out there and looking for them (shopping) that's the problem. I'd be happy if I could afford a personal shopper and never have to set foot in a store again. YAY for your friend!

Shopping for clothes can be a real pain. Maybe if you learn which stores/labels carry the cuts and styles that fit you, you can narrow it down and it will be less painful.
I know that I can order certain labels and be pretty sure they are going to fit, but not all (don't get me started on vanity sizing, lol.) I do a lot of shopping online because mostly because I'm too lazy to go out and try things on.
My friend is a great example that shows style has nothing to do with what size you wear.

I mostly live in anything-but-crew-neck t-shirts, and skinny or boot cut jeans. Sandals in the summer, boots in the winter.
I've started wearing more shorts, and would like to add more dresses into my wardrobe, but I have a hard time finding casual dresses that fit well. I'm small on top so my curves get lost, and I look pregnant, without a narrow waist.

@sroo4 and @wrongsideof30, what brands of jeans are you looking at? My go-to brands are American Eagle for work, Lucky Brand and True Religion. I also like 7 jeans, but I haven't bought any in a while. I like those brands because they tend to give me curves where mine are lacking lol. I don't know if they'll work for your body types, but they all sell boot cut, straight leg and boyfriend jeans and they've gotten away from only selling low-rise jeans. Some of those brands can be pricey, but I rarely pay full price.

Not to mention that the right style will slim your appearance. -Says the person that can't wait for this silly skinny jean thing be over with so she can find boot cut again I HATE skinny jeans and it seems like they are never going to go away. I have not been able to find a flattering pair of jeans in a very long time. Word!! OMG, me too!! I HATE HATE low rise jeans. They only suit bodies where there isn't an inch of extra flab on the tummy and waist. Otherwise wearing a low rise jeans make one look like muffin top This stretchy jeans phenomena is just horrible. Looks good for an hour and then the whole jeans becomes baggy. I have had good luck with some Calvin Klien Jeans I found. So I bought 5 pairs and have been using them. I dread the time when I have to go jeans shopping again

I have a hard time with dresses too, because if it fits in one place, it's usually too tight or too big in another. I'm kind of broad across my back/through my shoulders but I don't have a large chest. I think the broad shoulders are from the heavy lifting at my job because a lot of the ladies I work with have the same issue. Dresses are tricky because I have too many parts that aren't usually on the same body I guess.

I suggested that she try to find jeans that weren't so tight in the waist but still fit everywhere else. That worked for her, she'll wear skinny legs now. But I don't know if those jeans exist for everybody.

Macy's around here carries a lot of Calvin Klein. I also get it at the outlets.
