We have it all- protests, the Black Panthers, mayor calling for firing the cop, dead elderly lady on her own property- plenty of room for opinions on this one- so what say you?
They way I see it there is blame being tossed about on just about everything except for the fact that she was armed- as if her waving a gun had nothing to do with it.
93 or 13 if you wave a gun around and the police tell you to drop it and you do not- well....
I guess the only question really- is what the hell people are protesting about?

Is there an article or an excerpt to go along with this? Based on your description, I think I get the gist of it. And I can tell you that if a 93-year-old protestor riding a black panther comes at me, I'm going to shoot first and ask questions later.

An investigation into whether the officer involved has the proper temperament for the job seems reasonable to me.

I'm wondering why a 93 year old woman was brandishing a gun?

Is it normal for a police officer to shoot two people in two years?
Why would he shoot an elderly lady four times?....couldn't he wait for negotiators, or back up, or use a taser
Why didn't the nephew just give her her keys back and wait for her to calm down...then try again Elderly people are prone to getting upset and confused.
There must be a better policy in effect than this....sounds like a complete shambles.

I feel for the old lady but I understand the cop. The first one wasn't a bad call on his part if you read the story behind it. He wasnt the only one shooting in the first story. This one, I'm assuming he got scared. Anyone brandishing a gun is scary. Even my weapons instructor says to put the gun down and away from you after shooting and killing the perp and the when calling 911, tell them your gun is away from you. I would NEVER EVER be holding a gun around a cop or anyone else with a gun and not expect them to shoot me.

Yes.... but this can't be the outcome that anyone wanted A doddery 93 year old who thought she was getting robbed of her car.........not a criminal gang murderer or drug runner. If this is all the police can come up with....they need a rethink.

For sure. This is an awful tragedy. Lord, I can so think of this happening to me because the older I get the more I want my gun for security. But she wasnt in her right mind and she shouldn't have had a gun. Just because she says HI to people doesn't qualify her to be a gun owner.

i am really not getting the straddle, here. guns are pretty obviously the issue here, but nobody seems to want them taken away from dottering old fools.

If a doddering old fool isn't going to listen to a cop and lay down her weapon on demand, then what else do you do?
It is along the same line of why she was there in the first place, the doddering old fool thought she had sufficient mental capability to drive a car, which is as deadly as the gun.
I don't agree that the cop should have been fired. If it was a deranged male on drugs, no one would have thought twice, yet the mental capacities are about the same and a 93 year old woman can still pull a trigger and kill someone.

i am really not getting the straddle, here. guns are pretty obviously the issue here, but nobody seems to want them taken away from dottering old fools. *knock knock knock* "This is the police! Open up!" *click* "H... hello?" "Police business, ma'am. We're here to confiscate your firearms and matches." "My... gun? But I have it for protection. I live alone." "We're aware of that, ma'am, but it has come to our attention that you're a doddering old fool. We have to confiscate your firearms." "A doddering old... fool? What...? What is this?" "This notice explains the results of your most recent dodderiness assessment. It explains why we've been authorized to confiscate any firearms and matches in your possession. The items will be held for 90 days, during which time you may request a 1020 Dodderiness and Foolishness Reassessment if you wish to reclaim your property." "Oh. Oh my. Am I being... committed?" "No ma'am. You're just too stupid to own a firearm. Have a nice day." So yeah, add me to the list of people who don't want to take guns away from doddering old fools.

If I live to be 93 I'm doing this! Suicide by Cop! Are cops trained to shoot them in their leg or shoulder in cases like this or is that just in the movies? If that is not SOP - don't wave a gun and act like you "ain't right" at a cop or any armed person because it will not end well. I also don't get the hoopla about it. She was 93 and went out with a bang. Isn't that everybody's dream? LOL!!!

You do know that there are frequently situations in which police are involved for extended periods of time with someone who is armed in which they don't shoot.

But how to explain an average of 13 (now edging up to 14) anti-gun-owner threads per month for the past six months (and possibly longer, if I had the time to go back further)? That's 81 anti-gun-owner threads in six months. It's like a security feature. If a self-defense shooting, accidental shooting or police shooting thread ever comes up where the civilian gun owner isn't dead, arrested, or jailed by the end of it, we'll know his account has been hacked.

Well, I'd not start by describing them as "anti-gun-owner threads". I'd describe them more as anti-irresponsible-gun-owner threads. That's how I believe EVT sees them, based on what I've read. I could be mistaken. I'm sure EVT will tell me, if I am. I also don't agree with your final statement. I believe, if EVT saw a shooting to be righteous, whether the shooter was a civilian, or a policeman, he'd post accordingly. I'm not for putting people in boxes that define, based on my assessment, who they are and what they think. I'd rather ask and let them tell me.

They could have moved back and waited for a gust of wind to blow her over Seriously, the object of the exercise has to be to get the gun off her.....get the car off her ......and settle her down with her relatives to live out her very final years ....and none of that happened So they could try to negotiate, wait until she had settled, thrown a cs canister, used a rubber bullet, used a taser, brought in a neighbour to try to calm her down called in reinforcements, starved her out. used a fire hose..........anything other than pump four shots into such a fragile old lady and end her life. Doesn't anyone think? Isn't there people affiliated to a police force who have the capacity to deal with this stuff?
