no, i think it is pretty close, actually. very often our arguments consist of you misinterpreting reasonably interpreting willfully skewing something i say to the point of absurdity, and then mocking me for calling me out making a comedy skit out of it. now, it may be is sometimes true that i am not completely clear (or even slightly clear to you, on occasion), but it is also the case that you don't bother to have me clarify. you simply take the most absurd possible straightforward least generous interpretation of my posts, and then blast away at it. when i point out that you are making a point that is totally different than the one i am trying to make, you say that i am being condescending duplicitous.. oh boy. even worse. i am never deceitful, Virgil. NEVER. i actually love that about the board. since nobody here knows me, i am free to say whatever i firmly believe. so, there, fundamentally, is our problem. you THINK i am being deceitful, but i am not. i am often busy, distracted, and hasty. i might say things that are not accurate, accidentally. however, you seem to think that i am here to intentionally spin things into something they are not, and that is utterly, completely false. i would ask you more about this, but i am totally uninterested in it, beyond the fact that you believe that it is so. for the record, as little as you think of me, i never thought so little of you. until recently, i had assumed that you were a well intentioned person whose interests were only in getting it right. but now, i can see that you think i am a real dick, and you are on a crusade to prove that to everyone. how sad for you.

So if a senior dodders, they should have their weapons confiscated?
They'll be subject to a dodderiness test every two years, and if they lurch a little bit too much while moving from A to B then oop, sorry ma'am, turn in your firearms.
I cannot rightly quantify how absurd I find this idea, but I apparently can't tell what you're saying half of the time, so I'm going to assume that what you meant to say was that the state restricting firearm ownership based on dodderiness is a spectacularly ill-conceived idea that would have absolutely no effect but to divest seniors of their last possible means of defending themselves.
You say I'm confused. I say you can't communicate your ideas.
Regardless of who's correct, you're right: evidently some kind of breakdown in communication is occurring. I wish you many a fruitful debate with other posters who can understand you.
I think you're a swell guy.
I don't think you're coming after me. I don't think you deliberately misrepresent your views. I don't think you're a "dick". I have absolutely no idea where any of these accusations are coming from.
My lone grievance with you is that--whether it's you or me--what you say is consistently not equal to my reasonable interpretation of what you say. And if all the debate and inquiry and satire I employ to get us onto the same wavelength isn't something you want to deal with, then let's cut our losses and shake hands. There's no use arguing if we're speaking two different languages.

Why to these discussions have to turn personal?
just write what you have to say on a subject......and cest la vie
None of us are personally close to each other... so who cares?

i didn't ask you to do that. i asked you to do that when you are confused. but if you are confused by everything i say, then please stop responding. You say I'm confused. I say you can't communicate your ideas. i am not sure there is any practical difference, in terms of OUR relationship, Virgil. but i might point out that most posters here have little difficulty understanding me, with a few notable exceptions.Regardless of who's correct, you're right: evidently some kind of breakdown in communication is occurring. I wish you many a fruitful debate with other posters who can understand you. I think you're a swell guy. I don't think you're coming after me. I don't think you deliberately misrepresent your views. um....that is what duplicitous means, Virgil. deception is an intentional act.I don't think you're a "dick". I have absolutely no idea where any of these accusations are coming from. My lone grievance with you is that--whether it's you or me-- what you say is consistently not equal to my reasonable interpretation of what you say. on that we can agree. your interpretation is NOT what i am saying MOST of the time. you may blame me, if you wish. however, i would point out that there are two possibilities here, not one. the first is the possibility you have articulated. the second is that you are simply not reading my posts for what they are. And if all the debate and inquiry and satire I employ to get us onto the same wavelength isn't something you want to deal with, then let's cut our losses and shake hands. There's no use arguing if we're speaking two different languages. precisely. i never wished you or anyone else here any ill, nor have i wished to be anything other than totally clear. i am truly sorry if it did NOT come across that way, but i swear that it is the unvarnished truth. by the way, we are going to need to correspond in 2 months regarding the California budget, so we can't quite cut our ties yet. but i will do my best to stop responding to your posts in the meantime, if you will do the same with mine.

For the record, I don't find dj to be unclear when expressing his views. I don't find Virgil to be unclear, either. I'm able to understand the points made by each party, whether I agree with them, or not.

It might have helped that I did recognize it as Chinese characters, captain. That told me what to plug into the translator.

No, captain, that's not against the CoC. When said in jest, as you've said it, qualified with the statement that you mean it in a good way, it's not a personal insult. It's a compliment!

She should have dropped her weapon when told to. That's about the only thing I think could have been done differently.
Ohhh and the police department should have decided on a different outcome for the officer.

As long as she had the gun in her hand, it's a possibility... even if it was due to an accident. Remove the gun from her hand and the possibility of the officer being shot by her is removed too.

I want a "Dislike" for this. He shouldn't have been fired since he didn't do anything wrong. You would be 'Dislike'ìng the poster's comment or the news article and not the police department's decision. But that's how people take action these days. A thumbs down on the internets.

So you would be willing to risk the lives of the children who lived around her on the off chance that she would wait to pull that trigger until they had everyone safely out of the neighborhood? Interesting, I'm not so willing to let one deranged adult put others at risk. You don't wait until some whacko with a gun (regardless of age) decides to put it down if they are ignoring the orders of law enforcement and waving it around like it's a flag. They could start shooting at any time.

Tennesseerno i didn't. We have stories here everyweek of children being shot while sleeping in their bed or inside their house. How would you propose that one (or two) cops go house to house to ensure everyone in the area is adequately protected? How long will that take do you think? Would you be willing to run from house to house while some crazy old lady waves her gun around refusing orders? There's a treat to public safety, you remove that threat as quickly as possible before someone gets hurt or worse.

There's a treat to public safety, you remove that threat as quickly as possible before someone gets hurt or worse. Children shot ìn their beds or in their homes are usually the result of drive-by or street brawl shootings. That is usually the case in the Chicago area as it is here in the Memphis area. But this was not a drive-by or brawl shooting, was it. I would imagine police sirens alerted her neighbors that something was up. And then there are police bull horns to verbally warn neighbors to stay inside and stay low.. But then I was not on the actual scene and neither were you. So based upon reported information, we have different views as to how the event should have been handles.
