Damn I can imagine. I have some OCD/anxiety issues that finally needed drugs because my constant agitation was affecting my marriage. Even with meds I still get uncontrollable bouts here and there. If my bouts used eating as an outlet, it would be doubly hard. I can pretty much hide my demons now. I'm sure social issues aren't helping you one bit. Maybe find a distraction that keeps your hands busy. I know I can't absentmindedly watch tv or even read a book because my idle hands can cause scratching/ picking damage. I like computer games that keep both hands busy. Some people say knitting or crocheting or other, or whatever keeps both hands too busy to eat. I wish you strength. Lazy - I have never, ever talked about my skin picking, hair plucking, issues here. In fact, the only person in real life that I have ever broached the subject with is my doctor. I just wanted to applaud your honestly as I know it is hard to talk about. I agree with your assessment that sometimes only medication can help to take the edge off enough to be functional and be around other people and sometimes in our own skin as well. I also find that antidepressants sometimes make my OCD type symptoms worse. I seem to have depressed and nonfunctional at one end of the spectrum and well functioning but a bit more OCD on the other... It's a never ending battle. Ava, I have been overweight for all of my life. If anyone had ever told me it was related to my brain chemistry function I would have told them they were having a brain issue. I notice now that when I am feeling well and my dopamine/serotonin are functioning as they are supposed to, not eating sugar/carbs/junk just isn't an issue. I no longer crave them. No more craving means I stock my house with good food and am resolved to not buy other things. I try hard to look at food as fuel and understand that crap in = feeling crappy. I have recently been considering the idea that it is the depression itself which tells my brain that I cannot possibly have enough energy to do something. This is very destructive to my working and every other aspect of life. Every single time I feel like I have no energy I am trying to learn to question if it is reality or thought? Have I done anything exhausting? If not, then I try to tell myself it is depression and that if I start XYZ project for a few minutes then I will be able to complete it. Honestly, it kinda works! And, then the more I get accomplished the better I feel and the ball starts to roll the other way for a while.

Even through the worst of my depression I always attended school and work, and I always performed well. People who see me going around my business can obviously tell I'm overweight, but I doubt they realize my struggles with food addiction and depression. I've gone to many therapists through my life because of my depression and most of them are not all that useful. They are also very expensive. I make $43K a year, which is not a fortune, but enough to disqualify me for any financial aid. Group therapy is what helped me the most with depression, and maybe it will work for my overeating too. I also have a "not moving enough" problem that I will have to address through exercise. I like the group therapy idea. I've done individual therapy at times when I needed a mid-course correction and it's mostly been helpful, but when I was in an abusive marriage what really helped me was group therapy with women who were in similar situations. The OA group you described didn't sound very effective- like they mostly wanted to intellectualize instead of talking about why they overate, when the latter would have been more helpful. I really do hope you find exercise that you enjoy, whether it's yoga, long walks, bicycling, swimming, housecleaning, etc. I ALWAYS feel better when I'm done, and there have been times I've started a workout feeling anxious or depressed about something and by the end of the workout my head has cleared, I feel better, and sometimes I've even come up with insights into what's bothered me. And, while it would be naïve to say that physical activity will resolve your depression (I know some great people who are on meds for depression and the effects of the meds are miraculous), I think it will help.

Have you looked at the dietbet website? A couple of the ladies from here and I have done a couple. One month left of one 6 month bet and one month into a second 6 month bet. It's got a bit of accountability because you have to weigh in every so often (in the privacy of your own home) and send them the pics to prove it's you.
When we did the first bet together we started a private fb chat. Now we check in sometimes once a week, some times a few times a day. We chat when we have hit a wall or are struggling. We message when we've hit a goal too. It's been really beneficial to have those two wonderful ladies to talk to. Maybe you can find something like that that will work for you too.

I don't think we can help you lose weight ava. Especially if it is an addiction problem. All of our advice is aimed at someone who isn't addicted to food.
You need to work on fixing the underlying problem, and us "laypeople" simply aren't qualified to help someone with an addiction problem.
We are well-meaning though, and we'll always be here to cheer you on!!!!

As for the hair loss- it was recommended that I add biotin to my morning vitamins. I've noticed an improvement.

Hi Ava - I might understand a bit too. Over the last two years I have lost 155#. There is no magic bullet, and as has been hinted at, no one can do it for you. Everyone has given great hints and tips. If you are anything like me, you could probably teach classes on weight loss and fitness. It is actually doing that stuff where the rubber hits the road. There really is only one ququestion do you (just you) want it bad enough? It is OK if you don't - no crime in being heavy! If you do, make your choices, every one, accordingly.

It did take me awhile to figure out how to use it, but I am not the brightest in the techo department I desperately need to loose ~25lbs. I am pretty sure wearing maternity clothes when your kid is 3 is not suppose to be the norm. I could be wrong though, I've been wrong before

Ok. All excited! Started myfitnesspal this morning. Added my breakfast, and holy cow! I'm going to starve!! It only gives me 1200 calories a day and my breakfast burrito was 460. I only have 740 calories left and I think I packed more than that in my lunch bag.

Yup, the app showed me that if I want mcds bacon egg cheese biscuit, I better exercise or eat a bagel with cream cheese for dinner. also showed me toaster strudels leave me too hungry for the calories I rack up.
Don't get discouraged. Today will be a going over day with that start, or you may not be as hungry because of the filling breakfast. eat and learn.

Skim milk has more sugar than whole. What?! Do you have a link? I buy 2%. My oldest would be in heaven if I bought whole milk. I worry more about sugar than fat. Not true. 2% Kreider farm milk - 11% sugar. Same for whole milk. Kreider farm that is. I sell good milk, kosher. Maybe for WAWA brand that is cheaper it is true...not here.

The nutritionist at work told me that if I'm hungry, I should eat. Ignoring hunger until the next scheduled meal is a really bad idea. She follows the paleo diet but isn't militant about it but I have found that cutting out gluten based products has certainly helped, so no breakfast burritos or lunchtime tacos or crusty baguettes. That's been rather hard because I love bread. I made an absolutely delicious paleo Italian beef crockpot recipe last night (actually had real flavor) and instead of serving it with my standard potatoes, I had mixed vegetables. I'm definitely trying to eat more lean protein and less starch. I am trying to lose about 10 pounds and this is the first time in my life I've ever had to watch what I eat. Family genetics seem to reveal a tendency to be slim when young and after 30 and/or babies a steady creep toward morbid obesity. I don't want to go down that track. Ava - I am in a different place than you when it comes to weight loss but I just wanted to comment on how sad you sound in your posts. I hope you find a way to deal with your excess weight as well as the underlying issues. You come across as a very nice person and you shouldn't be feeling bad about yourself regardless of how much you weigh. Good luck to you, Ava and congratulations to Shasta on her weight loss journey - you should be very proud of yourself.

I actually gained a bit.
I know I sound like a broken record but check your sodium intake. Cut that way down and all the retained water will leave.
Of course you will spend a day or two in the bathroom but you'll feel better.

I tried to friend Meghan, since she posted her username and it told me, no users found. I have 1 friend on MFP- how unpopular am I? there are privacy settings for your diary and you can set it so no one can see your food.

I still don't understand how is it that they "give" you 1200 calories a day regardless if you want to loose a pound/wk or pound and a half. I would have thought the calorie number should have changed
