To quote Obama, it is too bad that these two were "punished with a baby."

My 12 year old, well almost 13, is outgrowing her B cup bras and has a penchant for drama-y love stories... I'm not sure I'm going to sleep for the next few years of too grow up body being governed by an underdeveloped YA brain... I look at son, at 15, and think, that's how old my mom was when she got pregnant with me... But beyond daily lectures, the truth is you can't be with them every minute of every day... Even me, who it sometimes feels like I am. Just a FYI, another homeschoolers Junior in high school just announced her engagement... I was wondering about that?

Both my sister and I are adopted. Her mother was a 12 year old from Scotland (father was 17) who was sent to the US to stay with relatives and have her babies. She was born in 1969 so it seems like it's been happening forever.

Very sad. But, nothing unusual in the "big city". I remember being in 9th grade, & 2 girls brought their babies to "show off" to their teachers that they'd given birth to the year before! But, the fathers of those babies were older.
I wonder if these parents had even had "the talk" yet with their daughter. There's no time like the present!

Looking at my sister that is 11 and brother 12... Imagine them with child is just ludicrous to me.

When I read stuff like this, I'm grateful that my oldest is a complete nerd that can't do somersaults. High school level natural selection comes into play and by the time the girls realize what a catch he really is, he'll be able to support his offspring without my help. Now, the little one I'm worried about. He's already a budding Casanova.

How can people wait until puberty to start having those conversations with their kids? 5 year olds (in most cases) should know the medical explanation of how babies are made, and conversations continue from there. I'm not saying that alone will prevent these things but waiting until kids are going to be embarrassed by the mere thought of that conversation doesn't seem like a good way to get the kid to listen or absorb any of the info. Isn't your son in band, Minnesota? If so watch out come High School. I know there is the stereotype about "band geeks" but holy cow is that ever far from the truth.

Yes, he's in band, and he's actually really good. I went to my first parent teacher conference with the band teacher a couple weeks ago and she couldn't quit going on about him. Apparently, he's "the most naturally talented trombonist she's ever instructed" (and this is not a young woman).
I had no clue. He has a talent above academia. Finally. We've tried EVERYTHING.

Show him this video. This will get him juiced about what he can do with a trombone (and no, I am not posting anything weird, this is actually an awesome trombone video) www.wimp.com/trombonehappy/

I was raised in a large city, so I'm basically poking fun at myself. I'm simply reporting what I've seen. It is disappointing when high school kids make poor choices, but shocking when you see the really young kids end up being parents.

I went to jr high in the mid-to-late 90s, and there was a girl in my 8th grade class who got pregnant... with her second kid. I think she had the first in 6th. So 12? As kids start hitting puberty earlier and earlier, I think we'll see more cases like these...

Sent from my ADR6410LVW using proboards Well, I meant to have the sex talk with DS at 9. He's 10, and I know I need to do it now. We haven't talked the big talk for many reasons. Sure, he knows egg and sperm meet, and that's the extent of it. Any further explanations have previously been met with my DS telling me I'm wrong and him laughing. In my parts middle schoolers are engaging in sexual activity that "technically" still keeps them virgins. I'm still grappling with how you talk to a 10 year old about oral and non-traditional forms of sex. We also have to talk seriously about addictions, since they tend to run in H's family..I'm also still grappling with that as well. I don't want to scare the kid or have him think he's being deviant in his teens, but he does have to be careful. It would be easier if we had more talking points about sex. We talk about other things like drugs and drinking quite easily. But IMVHO, it's easier to when your favorite sports player is caught juicing or when pictures of heron addicts that have ODed show up on the news. DH and I both have teen moms in our families, but we don't have relationships with them.

Geeze, and I thought I lived in a Podunk town with the slew of pregnancies in high school! I definitely don't remember any talk about someone being pregnant in middle school. Maybe my hometown city wasn't as bad as I thought! Though it is now...I know they're getting pregnant that young now in my hometown.

Make him wait tables at a family friendly restaurant, or even better a Chuck E Cheese. That's instant birth control right there. I heard rumors about girls being pregnant in middle school but I wasn't in the inner circle so I don't know if they were valid rumors or not. I knew several people personally who were pregnant in high school. Gah, I don't want to think about having to get Depo for my 12 year old. No way I'd trust her to take the pill every day.

I really wish they'd develop male birth control beyond the condom.

Sent from my ADR6410LVW using proboards I actually think the opposite. I don't want my 5 yr old to know any of this yet. I lot of moms that I know are VERY open about anything and everything sex/babies related. I know a few co-sleeping families where mothers are sleeping naked with their 4-5-6 yr old sons. Call me a prude, but I just don't see the reason for such young kids to know such complex things. that being said, my oldest, who is 5.5 has been bugging me to add "human body" to our science curriculum, but I will be saving a reproductive area for the very end and even then will be talking about it in very general terms. I just don't think that knowing how things work has anything to do with whether your kid will be having sex at 12 or 22

I have always known that I grew up very protected, but this... The only stories from my childhood about teen sex involved 18 yo brides and premature ( ) babies. The parents must have moved the younger girls elsewhere to give birth I guess. But there was never as much as a whisper!

Not sure which one I want to order yet but I will get one soon. They start at toddler age and go up through adolescence. It helps to introduce things at an age-appropriate level and helps with discussion. As a kid that was sexually abused when I was very young, I want DD to have some knowledge of what is appropriate and what is not. Knowing that can help prevent abuse or at least let the kid know it was not right and hopefully report it. And I don't really want her getting her info on sex from the playground with other 8-10yr olds I would rather she know the facts before hand.
