This year we are renting a house on a lake for 10 days. It's our year to "slum it" for vacations.
Next summer we're going for a 3 week vacation to Maine via Canada.
We're stuck now, because we can't vacation during the school year. And DS does Little League during the summers.

I had some great ideas for where we would go this summer - but my DH over-rode them all and said he wanted to go to Minnesota. I know it is a lovely place, but not really what I had in mind for vacation. Sweet. Minneapolis/Mall of America type vacation or cabin on the north shore kayaking the boundary waters type?

Chicago in June. Driving there with a stop in Nashville. Making final plans this weekend as to hotels and exact route. Never been to either city; cannot wait! Hope to meet a board member or two along the way. The Captain is in Chicago and we hope to meet up. Anyone else? I'm in Chicago...

Likely neither. I think we are going to visit his relatives, who live in neither of those places. I think we are going to farm-land. I know, it is lovely - but it isn't my thing. I am sure we will spend a few days in Minneapolis. This Mall of America thing better be amazing - cause what I really want out of a vacation is to go to a huge mall and ride a roller coaster.

I only have a few days off between Summer classes and Fall classes during August, so we're going to visit a few national and state parks. We're planning to visit the Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Lassen National Volcanic Park, Crater Lake National Park, and Oregon Caves National Monument.

Mall of America. Not amazing. Unless you really love to shop. Every few years I get a wild hair up my ass to go and every time I'm like "WTH did I go there for?"
The North Shore is a beautiful area if you're into hiking and waterfalls and such. I try to get up there every couple years.

Not really that into hiking. How about driving? The Mississippi river valley in the Southeast is gorgeous and you should for sure cruise the river road south of MPLS, right sheilaincali ? The Great River road on the WI side is quite the tourist draw and there are a lot of cool little towns along the drive. You can stop at the Rock in the House near where I grew up. Late August is a great time to see Grizzlies near Haines, they come in for the second salmon run. We drive a few miles north of the Ferry Terminal and take pix.

Well, you could do what my co-worker did when her husband said he wanted to go to South Dakota... she said okay YOU can go to South Dakota. He went there and she went to Italy with her BFF. They have no kids though so taking separate vacations is easier I suppose.

almost 40: Would love to hear about your Ireland trip as I'm in process of planning one for Sept. 2015. Can you share details when you return?
As for this year, we will be visiting DD2 in Salt Lake City and then do some hiking in Utah's 5 national parks. Probably some time in Sept. or Oct. when it's not so hot/crowded.

We don't have a full week planned for vacation, just some day stuff here and there. We were going to do a full week to a beach, but decided we couldn't afford that AND all the day stuff (Cedar Point, Columbus Zoo, Idlewild, etc) we want to do this summer. Plus between baseball and swim lessons, it was kind of hard to pick a full week off.
I'm totally jealous of everyone going to Alaska! Definitely on my bucket list, but DH isn't very interested.

I have heard the national parks are wonderful. I think the next time I go to Vegas I will rent a car and spend a few days in Utah. Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon are not far from there.

Thyme- When are you thinking of coming here? Suggestions depend on the time of year. PM me or MPL if you want specifics for the area you will be in.
MPL is right- the "Red Wing" Mississippi valley in the Southeast part of the state is gorgeous. North Shore area is pretty nice too- State parks, Lighthouses, Boat tours of Lake Superior.
MOA is ok but we live here so it's lost it's basic appeal- stops being "special" when you can go any old time. We have zoos, parks, museums, old time town, lakes, lakes and more lakes (I read somewhere that we have like 10,000 of them ). Every single little town here has some sort of festival or weekend in the summer. There's a Little House on the Prairie thing in Walnut Grove. Huge Ren. Fest in the fall. The State Fair.

DS is going to Germany for a month in June. We will probably do a weekend or two in CA at my parents vacation house.
Mostly we'll try to do some weekend camping trips this summer, head up to North Shore for a long weekend, make our annual trek to middle of nowhere Nebraska for the Junk Jaunt. The Boy is starting to narrow down his colleges so we may fit a few campus visits in. He still has Winnipeg on his short list and really wants to see that campus.
Summer is our busy season for both my work and DH's work so it's not always possible to take a week or two off in the middle of the summer. DS is so serious about his schooling that he doesn't like to miss school. His January/February and March are packed with all of his competitions so those months are extra difficult to leave during.
We are planning a big trip to Alaska summer of 2016. That's where DS was born (Anchorage) and we want to take him there as a graduation present since we moved away from there when he was 2.

Phoenix and San Francisco. Already went to Las Vegas this year. They need to have toy industry events somewhere cool. LV and Phoenix are kind of lame. We could do Toy Faire, but February in NYC sounds miserable.

I'm going to Atlanta over Labor Day weekend for sure. Chick Fil A Kick Off bowl for college football, Braves game and Nascar Sunday night are the definite plans. Also likely are the aquarium, Coke, Olympic park and CNN.
I'll probably have a couple shorter trips to Knoxville to visit my aunt's family. Myrtle Beach to visit family is usually a pretty good bet. Aside from that everything else is up in the air.

I'm going to be at our cabin "just up the road" (Hwy 74) most of May and the first two weeks in June.
PM if you'd like to get together.

I'll be in So. CA most of May and June, cleaning up and turning two of our rentals. Hoping to get some hiking in the "high country" 8000'-10000' near the cabin if they have stabilized the forest since the big fire last year.
DH is trying to figure out a week vacation somewhere this fall.

Not doing much this year, western Mass for a few days around labor day (which is only 2 hours away lol), maybe NJ for a few days over the summer. Nowhere spectacular. (although camping in western mass is fun) Hoping next year we can take some kind of trip for DH's graduation, either a cruise or some tropical all-inclusive thing in the Caribbean or Mexico where we can lay in the sun and get little umbrella drinks from a swim-up bar. DH wants to do a trip to Denver sometime too since he's all set that it's the place we should move someday - he's never been though, lol! So I might do that next year, we'd want to rent a car and putter around the city/area and check the mountains out.

Denver and Colorado Springs are pretty nice. I still miss the springs a bit and we left 7 years ago.

We have been doing a family vacation in Narragansett the past few years, so we are doing that again. My puppy is from Narragansett. I had NO idea how beautiful that area of Rhode Island is. I figured it was just one giant brewery.
