This happened in RL. In a 1 1/2 hour time span with 5 people. 4 men, 1 woman. One drama scene on Valentine's Day. I see the guy bent over and another patting his back. I knew it was some drama. AzHat (a rounder) had played Jar of Hearts to his wife; and she had put some chocolate hearts in a jar for him setting it on the counter. He twisted it that she had the jar of hearts to hurt him. She has moral convictions and he's trying to bring her down. Gain sympathy for himself. This was a sport where thing needed to be picked up and put in a large locked cabinet with two doors. One large and the other medium sized at the end. The large door was locked and so was the small one with one guy locked inside. Knocking to get out. The bully said I own you. The article on trolls was enlightening and I can watch both in RL and on the internet. [ Huh? I thought it was just me.

That it seems to me is a problem in California. It is sad to blame special need's children and their families. If they didn't have us they would have no one. We do have to fight for our kids. It is not our fault that our Federal gov is lax in this case. We all know Washington is full of idiots. Vote wisely. More money is spent to educate people that aren't even here legally...which means they certainly aren't paying the kind of taxes I'm paying. California is a huge sanctuary state. You want to protect the illegals, don't bitch because you can't afford to afford to educate the kids that belong here.

OT - Virgil, I want you to read the book The Name of the Rose to me and tell me what it's about. If I can find a copy of it at the library here, I'll give it a look. The Wiki summary suggests that it's not really "about" anything; it's a creative work intended to be polysemous and obscure. And as you're probably aware, I was plainly accused of "finding trivial shit to bitch about" when I started a discussion on semiotics last Friday. Hence if I take more flak from the peanut gallery, you'll owe me one.

The article on trolls was enlightening and I can watch both in RL and on the internet. [ Huh? I... think... this is supposed to be interpreted literally. If I understand correctly, Artemis was with some friends on Valentine's Day. One man, "AzHat", a drunk ("rounder" meaning a drunk), had played the song "Jar of Hearts" to his wife, and as a gift his wife had put some chocolate hearts in a jar on the counter. But instead of accepting the gift, he accused her of setting up the display to mock him. Artemis thinks he's just bitter because she's a moral woman, and the drunk is trying to put her down and engender sympathy for himself. Artemis thinks that what the situation ("sport") warranted was a big cabinet where the bully (presumably the drunk) should be locked inside, knocking to get out. She backs this sentiment up by claiming that the bully told his wife "I own you." I don't know what the significance of the two sizes of doors is. Maybe his wife is a dwarf. At any rate, Artemis is able to see trolling (bullying) both on the Internet and in real life.

This is a fascinating foray into the world of trolling. It was interesting to watch the show.
In a world where people have opposite passionate opinions why can't people agree to disagree? Does anyone honestly think someone is going to say..you know! He's right!!! Thank you for informing me, I didn't realize...
It just seems like a lot of wasted energy on an obscure message board with people who are not capable of doing anything about your situation. What if you convinced the other side you were right? Is your life going to be changed from this moment on?
You gotta know when to hold em, know when to fold em, know when to walk away and know when to run.

I spent a couple days thinking about it, and my nephew is still living with my sister and on probation. If he screws up again he goes to a juvenile detention center.
Sorry to hear, I know it was a struggle for you.

When have I ever said that I want to protect illegals? I don't set state policy. Which illegals and parents of special needs students are probably happy for. We can afford to educate everyone. My daughters are getting an education, just not as good of one as they could be getting with different educational spending priorities. If you aren't happy with their education, send them to private school. I am going to see how the rest of this school year goes before making the decision but there is a good chance my oldest will be going to private school next year. You might not want to cater to the illegals but you chose to live in a state that does. They are sucking up more money than any other group and their parents pay next to no taxes. Boot them out and there will be more than enough money to educate the children that actually belong in California.

Honestly, sometimes I do learn from the messages. Generally, the trolls are the closed-minded ones, but sometimes it opens the eyes of the bystanders. There are people who post in Doxie's threads with no other purpose than to be mean, but some people stick with it and post helpful things--and I can say I've learned from some of them.
I don't see how Doxie returns to her threads when people are being cruel, I give her mad props for that--usually I avoid threads about special needs like the plague, my skin just isn't thick enough.

My personal opinion is that doxie is trolling with the threads she starts. They can't be real, they just can't! I don't spend too much time reading her threads because they are always the same theme and that gets boring. We need a few of the crazies from the old MSn. Who was the Toyota mats guy (doow?) and terry with the wedding dress. So many funny crazies would stumble in there

The children in the vast majority of cases are US citizens. You can't deport US citizens. Legally they have just as much right to a public education as any other kid. We could deport the parents, who aren't US citizens, but then what do we do with the kids if the parents don't take them back to Mexico? Put them in foster care? We'd still have to educate them. I'm just glad I don't live in a border state. I say get the national guard to patrol and shoot anyone that crosses over illegally. That will stop the anchor babies

I'm an asshole because I think we spend too much money attempting to educate special needs children, but we should have the military shoot people from other countries that want to come here to raise their children because it's too expensive. Okie dokie. You did technically go on record last week as saying the US should facilitate the suicides of teens convicted of drug felonies to "save the taxpayers quite a bit of money". In terms of rock hard, ice cold fiscal pragmatism, I don't think Miss T. is going to top that.

Okie dokie. They are entering our country illegally. If someone breaks into my house I have no problem hiding behind my husband as he shoots them. I want to protect my country just as much as I want to protect my house. They are breaking the law. Any other criminal gets tossed in jail but for some reason we give illegals a free pass. I will never understand it. Even bleeding heart Canada doesn't just accept the illegals like we so

That's not fair, I didn't limit it to just drug felonies. I said they should put a sturdy beam and a rope in the cell of every felon. Drug related or not. True. But you were challenged on a specific case. Captain raised the example of a girl charged with a felony after her science experiment accidentally blew up (Reply #78) and asked "does this girl deserve a rope and a beam?" to which you replied (Reply #87) "The rope and beam comment wasn't implying we should kill them, just not try as hard to stop them from killing themselves. If the charges stick to the 16 year old and she decides she'd rather take her own life than spend her young adult years in gen pop of the state prison and spend the rest of her life branded a felon, who are we to stop her?" Granted, your view seems to be more rooted in the mentality "If they want to kill 'emselves, let 'em." than fiscal pragmatism in this example, but your argument throughout the rest of the thread is that a felon who wants to suicide is at least one less felon sucking the state treasuries dry. If it's any consolation, I don't consider you a troll. The only three posters I consider(ed) trolls have all been banned for ages now.

I grew up in a family that was VERY prejudice against anyone not white, heterosexual and "normal." Though understanding other people's lives I have come to understand that prejudice is very wrong. Without people talking to me about it I would never have changed my opinion. My own mother was the queen of the N word, with my grandparents, and now realizes how bad that was to perpetuate on another generation. I hope that when I share an opinion someone might think about what I have said, and try to see where I am coming from. I do the same and sometimes it can be a great experience when you are open to accepting whatever the information is. On the special ed topic, our local school boards all used them to give themselves lifetime heath insurance coverage! We have schools struggling to meet that stupidity today for people who haven't seen the schools in decades. THAT is dumb. IMO.

No different than presidents taking their golden parachutes when they leave office or any of our "elected" officials. Secret service for life, GREAT health care for life, no Obamacare for them, their salaries for life, the list is endless.

I'll add my two cents to the special needs debate. My good friend is a nurse whose job is help prepare the Individual accommodation Plan (IAP) and to oversee the implementation of a part of the program. She would agree with Dark with the waste of resources on a lot of the plans. One of the reasons is very aggressive "advocates" who convince parents that their special needs child need a lot more resources than they do. These aggressive advocates are very good at convincing parents that the School Board is trying to screw them out of what their child "deserves" when there's very little or no benefit to the child. But it makes the advocate look good for fighting for their child and getting resources. My friend says it's really awful because of course if anyone says your child will get little or no benefit from the program the parents go to the school board or threaten lawsuits. My friend says that every once in a while a parent will wise up to what's going on and see how the advocate is manipulating the system to make themselves look good.
Yes, my friend is in Southern California but I find it difficult to believe that the same thing doesn't happen in every major metropolitan area.
I think it's very easy for a parent to think that more resources for their special needs child is better instead of taking a more critical thought process and asking how going through some of these processes will actually benefit their child and how one measures it.
My friend loves her job other than this aspect of it. She has some great stories to share.

If I understand correctly, Dark's girl's are special needs (because they require more resources over the general curriculum) and he's P.O.'d because they're not getting a bigger slice of the pie?

Yes, that happens Bonnie.
I've been blessed with great teachers (well, not the "Dr." ) who have always accommodated my requests. It's been years since I took my red magic marker to an IEP, but when I did they always made the requested adjustments. It's like some parents have no idea you can do that. Once they understood my expectations--and they weren't unreasonable--they adjusted their expectations accordingly.
My son's school has open house once a month. I dread it, parents come in and complain about *everything*, the sun is too bright and the grass isn't green enough, this is not how I want to end my day--and I'm not even a teacher! If I could skip it, I would, but I've been told "If you skip it, who will tell them they are doing a good job and appreciated?" I've resorted to having a strong drink before I go.
I wish we could video the meeting and force people to watch themselves.

I don't think his girls are special needs. He's complaining that his "normal" girls are stuck in classrooms with 39 other kids because the special needs kids suck up all the resources. Loop was on the school board (not sure she still is) and I'm sure she's seen the budget pie charts and seen how some parents work the system.
I think it's fair to question why the system seems to be broken and what can be done to fix it...without name calling or personal attacks.

His girls belong in G&T, which is above and beyond the regular curriculum. So they are "special needs" in a broad sense.

I wish we could video the meeting and force people to watch themselves. You sound like a reasonable parent. Most of the folks who cause the problems are not reasonable people. Some of it as I stated in my prior post are probably ok but the advocates can really wind them up.
But with some of the kids who have severe behavioral problems it's been clear to my friend that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

His girls belong in G&T, which is above and beyond the regular curriculum. So they are "special needs" in a broad sense. You reminded me that when I was in the GATE Independent Study program it WAS funded through the "handicapped" program. I didn't realize it at the time but the educators back then were concerned about the high rate of high IQ kids dropping out of high school because they were bored.
I got into the program very late (second semester sophomore in HS) because I had heard of a French program they had. The GATE counselor tried to intimidate me with saying that in order to get in the program I had to take the IQ test. I said "Fine, give it to me". Somehow I tested really high and the counselor came back to me with "You did a whole lot better than we thought". I got in the program.
I never took any of that very seriously. Most of those kids had been going to school together their whole lives...and they were pretty strange. I purposefully got into sports (none of them were very athletic) to stay "normal".
