Oh and I've NEVER rinsed quinoa, just poured out of the bag. But like I said - I never eat it just "like that", it's usually mixed with other things

When I first try something I like to try it "naked" so I know what I'm dealing with. It DEFINITELY needs some doctoring up to me.

Except may be couscous, I can't think of anything that I can eat "naked"

Except may be couscous, I can't think of anything that I can eat "naked" barley. I really like barley plain. Beth wonders she hasn't made it in forever and resolves to make some this weekend.

...:::"rather than bring a fresh one or bring a pitcher to the table and refill it without touching the dirty glass":::...
I like when they bring a pitcher, the best. I have often wondered if there is a cost/benefit to refilling vs. bringing new ones. More glasses dirtied means more to wash; which means more labor, more water used, more space taken up in the dishwasher.

Thats hot! I'm going to cook some bulgur while pantsless later!

I think white rice, brown rice and barley are all good with just a little salt.

Often they just keep refilling the same pitcher. That pitcher may have been refilled 5 times already. So your glass might not touch another dirty glass, but it's touching a dirty pitcher that has also touched the glass at the table next you, the table behind you, the table in front of you etc. Technically speaking the pitcher is not supposed to touch anything (the lip of the pitcher should never touch your glass) but it's rarely enforced. There's you're germaphobe moment for the day.

I love both quinoa and tabbouleh (sp?). I treat them like I do stir fried rice.
Depends on what I have in frig/kitchen. Cucumbers, tomatoes, feta cheese, walnuts, dried cranberries, broccoli, marinated artichokes, fresh parsley, red onion and so on. I always squeeze in fresh lemon juice and a little olive oil while still warm.
I do use chicken stock but I make my own stock and keep some in freezer so less salty that way.
And NO I don't put all those together but do a more of mix and match. I tend to make it more like a salad without the lettuce.

I made lentils the other day, and after they were already in the pot with the rest of the stuff, I read I was supposed to rinse them.
Ooopsie.

The latest, barring the storm that is supposed to be coming, is that we are having a dinner party where you are supposed to make something from a relative so I am making DFs grandmas cake with her special frosting. Okay, so I get the recipe from his aunt. Priceless. 8 different kinds of cocoa, 4 different kinds of sugar, and it goes on and on. Which am I supposed to buy? Does it make a difference? So I picked what I thought might work and bought a can of frosting for back up. If someone thinks the frosting tastes like Betty Crocker, oh well.

I'd like to see it. Would you post it?

Is there any way you can take copy of ingredients to a bakery and ask if they have a cake like/similar to that? If so, buy it and put it on your prettiest cake plate and serve it up. I'm real sneaky that way when it comes to cooking

Ill give it a shot. Here goes. 1 and 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 2 heaping T cornstarch, 2 heaping T cocoa, butter size of egg, 1 and 1/2 cup water, 1 t vanilla. Boil consistently until smooth and thick. Add vanilla at this time. Let cool and frost cake.

I remembered a point I'd wanted to make about this topic. There are picky eaters who will eat what is available if they have no options (or to be polite), and there are picky eaters who would rather eat nothing than something on their hit list.
A lot of places suck for the latter. Stadiums, for example... More than once, DW's choices have basically been "a pretzel" or "potato chips". Some places have more variety, like cracker jacks. If they are really lucky, overpriced microwave cheese pizza.

I get that a vegetarian is not going to jump at chicken tenders or hot dogs; especially the low quality overpriced versions of those sold at sporting events. It can be a challenge if the opportunity to eat beforehand was not present. Airports too -- two semi-short flights with a layover in a rink-a-dink airport does not make for a good eating day. Who doesn't love gummy bears and cheetos for lunch?

I think you posted this once before? I liked it so much I bought it, and now it's on my fridge too. I got an extra to send to a nutrition counselor friend of mine. It sums her philosophy up nicely, as well. (I also picked up the one that says "expiry dates are for the weak". Perfect. My as-yet-unconceived kids have no idea what they're in for.)

I hate terms like picky eater. They are almost always about the person saying them much more so than the person they are meant to be about. Is the person really only willing to eat three things? Or are they just not into the things the people calling them picky like? I was called a picky eater as a kid because i tend toward vegatarian tendancies. I eat pleanty of things I just don't like slabs of meat with mushy veggies and mashed stuff covered in gravy. I defy anyone here to get out a plate full of a food they hate and eat it. It just doesn't happen with adults since they can buy foods they like. For some reason we expect kids to do it or we label them picky.

Uhh....someone who only eats 3 things IS picky!
DS hates peas, DD hates cooked carrots. So I don't serve them (because, frankly, I dislike them as well). I have a laundry list of things that they will eat so it's not like it's affecting their nutrition.
I'd say a kid is picky 1) if they have a LIST of things they won't eat 2) they are not getting adequate nutrition from the things they will eat. This is MY opinion. YMMV
