This morning, I overheard the gate guards talking about how they think they were born in the wrong era/time.
I thought I'd pose the question to you guys. Do you ever feel like you were born in the wrong era/time? If so, what period of time would better suit you?

I have never thought about it so I assume I am right where I should be. But I can see it being difficult for someone who isn't...

Every now and then I think about it, but as a single mom who works a (very) male-dominated field, I think there might be no time better for me than now. Add hard-headed, stubborn, independent tom-boy to that mix and it gets even worse Overall, I work with a great group of guys who accept me as one of them. However, when someone new comes, I still see some resistance until they figure out that I'm GOOD at the job and work hard. There are still a couple who balk at the idea of a female being the lead on a job, even though they don't have an issue working side-by-side with me. I still get push from certain management because I'm female. I started in 2000, the first female on "the crews" in years. Before that, the one "female experience" they had there was horrible, I was lucky few people remembered her. I think any earlier a time, and my work life would be much more miserable. The single mom thing is more acceptable now too. I'm not saying it's a good thing to be a single mom, but I'm not denied jobs because of it, I don't have to hide it, walk with my head down, or be ashamed of it. It's just my situation and I do what needs to be done. If I were a guy, my answer would be completely different. There are lots of eras I'd want to live in if I was a guy.

Born in the right for technology and stuff, but so born in the wrong era for manners, taste and values!

Nope. Any earlier and I'd lose my job because I'm pregnant and I'd have no recourse. Or I would have been canned as soon as I got married since the assumption would be I don't "need" a job.
I probably wouldn't even be doing this job or would have had a lot harder time blazing my path since girls weren't expected to be in science.

Absolutely the right time. Born in 1953, brought up with solid 1950s values, but by the time I got older the culture allowed for more exploration and questioning of traditional norms. The feminist movement saved my sanity. I also went to college in that golden age when BC pills were available and any STD you got could be cured with antibiotics (although I never got one).

Totally unrelated since it is fantasy, but if I was born in the medieval period, I'd be Arya Stark (at least so far, I'm only on book four. I hope she doesn't suck later)

I can't think of any era of the past I'd want to live in. Maybe visit, if I could, but not live in full time.
Though like Ann in VA, I have on occasion daydreamed about what It'd be like to live in "the future." Though it's impossible to know how the future will be.

The idea of being alive for the first warp flight and teleportation is intriguing. Being in the Downton Abbey era might also be nifty. Any earlier, I don't think so...

Downtown Abbey time but only if I can be upstairs. Downstairs doesn't sound like fun to me!

I'm born in the right era but I just wish the 80's had lasted about 50 more years. I miss all the things we could do back then, the better manners and lack of technology we had, and I miss the music and the attitude from back then. But I still drink the same! It just takes longer to get back up.

I should have been a blacksmith in 1600s Ireland. This is a decent second place though.

I picked blacksmith because the few times I've done it, it was pretty awesome. I could be a cooper, brewer, or something else though. Just not a tanner.
Oh, and I'm a reddish brunette. Or was anyway. I swear the red hairs were the first ones to go gray.

I'd make a fantastic 1920s flapper or late 70s punk.

Upstairs doesn't sound like much fun either, unless being a grown woman and still having your father telling you what to do because you're unmarried sounds fun. Although, I could find out how excessively lazy I really could be if I put my mind to it

I wouldn't have wanted to be born any earlier. Before 1900 life was hard work and I'm basically lazy. 1900-1950 you had the 2 world wars, no thank you. Now I am recognised as equal under the law, at least here in North America. There are places I wouldn't want to be born, even today. Medical science is pretty good now. I've had 2 health issues that would have killed me 150 years ago but were very minor issues now. I think I drew the lucky straw when it comes to era and place of birth.
About that "old fshioned manners being better" crap. Most of that was used to control people and I don't buy into it being so much better. A lot of families were being very polite and well behaved as they were being beaten and molested behind closed doors.

I was born about ten years too late from what I can tell. Why? What difference does ten years make? I dunno. I'm always more in tune with music/culture/events that were just a little before my time. Maybe it's because I have an older sibling? I was born in the 70s so one would surmise that I'd like 80s and 90s music when I really am more into 70s and 80s. Also, I probably would have ended up as a professional athlete since it would have just been on the cusp of title9, less competition, etc. I was invited to train with the Olympic Development team as is when I was young... long story there. But anyways, I think things would have turned out differently.

It's a tv show about life in a titled household. I'm not sure when it's set as I haven't actually seen it.
I'm fairly sure I'd have been a peasant, in just about every earlier time period. So while it's fun to contemplate living in a different era, I'm glad I don't.

I don't know Gydyva. You don't have to go far into history to see some pretty immoral stuff. There was the holocaust in the 40's. There were also some pretty bad wars from that time and before. Not to mention slavery was extremely common in most of the world for much of human history. If you go back even farther, the Romans were totally brutal. I'm not convinced morals were any better. If anything, the bad stuff was all kept behind closed doors and people didn't pry.

I don't like we are as a nation right now so I would prefer to have been born earlier, before we took such a turn...downside would mean that I would be much older and I don't want to be older.

I think Rat Pack era might have been fun. I would have lived in Vegas and been a gangster's moll and just hung out drinking and smoking.

I'm with you on the other thought, I'd be working way hard, and dying way young.

I would never want to give up the modern convieniences of indoor plumbing and power. I mean, it's crazy when you thing out it, living without power. You'd be going to bed at sunset every day and getting up at dawn. What else are you going to do at nighttime? It's too dark to see anything.
And of course, indoor plumbing should be self explanatory. Going to an outhouse would suck, or whatever folks had to do.
