I dunno. I'm always more in tune with music/culture/events that were just a little before my time. Maybe it's because I have an older sibling? I was born in the 70s so one would surmise that I'd like 80s and 90s music when I really am more into 70s and 80s.
Also, I probably would have ended up as a professional athlete since it would have just been on the cusp of title9, less competition, etc. I was invited to train with the Olympic Development team as is when I was young... long story there. But anyways, I think things would have turned out differently. Nobody likes the 80s and 90s music. Hey...80's music is awesome! 90's music sucks ass

Downtown Abbey time but only if I can be upstairs. Downstairs doesn't sound like fun to me! And this is usually where it comes down to when I'm 'discussing' with friends who like to walk out the 'we are so less free' mantra... IF one could hand pick your station and surroundings, I guess just about any era would work... But if you were rolling the dice and had just as much chance ending up any color, any religion, any gender, any social layer.... Well, not much holds a candle to now... eta: should read here and now...

I don't even know what to say to people that think 80's hair bands are good music. This is so upsetting. Journey?? I need to lie down.

Ok. I'll give you that. It's not really "music" so to speak, but it's fun to sing in the car with your friends.

This morning, I overheard the gate guards talking about how they think they were born in the wrong era/time.
I thought I'd pose the question to you guys. Do you ever feel like you were born in the wrong era/time? If so, what period of time would better suit you? I believe we WAY over romanticize the past. I am so glad I live when I do! Running water, electricity, safer homes, less violence, better chance of education and more options as a woman, etc.

i just dont think it was as prevalent as it is now.....
Seriously? Opium dens? Whore houses? A lot of the "boys will be boys" attiude is from the Victorian era. Women knew they'd be SOL if the called their husbands out so you sucked it up and pretended you had a proper marriage.
Beating your wife, as long as you did not do visible damage, was acceptable clear into the 1950's.
Then everything Latebloomer and Phoneix mentioned.
It was all swept under the rug. You didn't have to scratch very deep to find the ugly though.
I'm not sure how they were more moral, they were just better at pretending.

Let's not forget locking up folks with mental illness in the attic, if you had money or chaining them up in some hellhole if you couldn't.

And let's remember that 'promiscuity' of women (including 'inviting rape') ... Was also categorized under mental illness...
But hey, at least we got thibrator out of that whole mess, right...

I need computers, I'm addicted to their workings and coding. I was born too early, way too early. But I wouldn't be here if I was born later, cause I was born at the end of my mum's reproductive cycle.

Well, no wonder they weren't happy back then. You don't use it on your thigh! LOL! I do! DH recently came across a picture when I was in my 20's. I'll have to show it to you for a good laugh.

Why? What difference does ten years make? I dunno. I'm always more in tune with music/culture/events that were just a little before my time. Maybe it's because I have an older sibling? But anyways, I think things would have turned out differently. I feel the same about my musical interests. I was born in '81 and I love old punk, ska, post-punk music. Musically, I'd have loved to live in another era just to see some favorites perform live.

Just for the record, 80s music blew compared to 90s music. There was some good metal, but any decade known for NKOTB... really? Devo anyone? The hair bands were like caricatures of cheesy rock bands. Whitesnake, Poison, Ratt.. I mean.. go watch those videos now. They're embarrassingly bad.

If I had a choice between listening to Devo for an hour or a punch in the balls I'd need some time to think.

Unlike the rest of you, I've actually had the opportunity to do some time-traveling. I was born in 1968, but when I was in kindergarten, my folks sold the house and packed us up for ten years of living in the recently de-colonized world.
If you think this is going to be about plumbing or disease, you're wrong.
The elites of former colonies tend to hold onto old ways long after the former colony has moved on. I got to see and hear some truly cringe-worthy things said with complete earnestness, especially regarding the role of women.
I don't think that I'd like to live in an earlier era.

I'm white and have a penis. I would be fine living in an earlier period. Change either of those things and it would probably be less appealing.

Absolutely the right time. Born in 1953, brought up with solid 1950s values, but by the time I got older the culture allowed for more exploration and questioning of traditional norms. The feminist movement saved my sanity. I also went to college in that golden age when BC pills were available and any STD you got could be cured with antibiotics (although I never got one). Born ìn 51. Would not have missed to '60s and '70s for the world. Good times then and now.

I was born in 1944. I'm happy that I wasn't born any earlier because of the limited opportunities that women had. Higher education for women was thought of as a "waste" unless they were going into teaching or nursing. Single women were stigmatized as was any female who did not fit the June Cleaver mold. In the 60's when birth control pills came out, doctors would prescribe them only to married females.
If I'd been born about 20 years later, I'd have had more opportunities. Young women today have so much more than women of my generation did.
