Apparently I haven't logged on here in awhile Trying to get caught up on the reading. I have been trying to really stay within 1400 calories (and have been mostly successful). Mostly, I have stopped drinking alcohol during the week and watching portions. I am doing a 45 day challenge with my cousins that includes increasing amounts of squats, leg lifts, plank and crunches. I'm on day 6 so far and feeling it too. Yesterday was 75 squats, 50 crunches, 25s plank and 15 leg lifts... Plank kills me. I have to do really well with eating and exercise this week because I'm planning to not be as good this coming weekend. I'm going to Chicago to visit my friend, but she eats pretty healthy anyway, so maybe it will help! Here are some numbers for tracking purposes... 1/6 - 186.2 1/11 - 184.0 1/19 - 182.6
Oh and apparently there are a lot of MFP users here. If anyone would like to add me, my user name is bwatt11. I love the extra motivation and support
Not doing to bad! OK - back to reading (oh and work...)

Not doing to bad! OK - back to reading (oh and work...) Way to go Acemom! I've cut out alcohol as well and it's making a huge difference in how I feel! Also, I'm with you on the planks! According to my app, I should be doing 60 second planks - yeah right! I shake so bad I collapse at about second 27! (Apparently I am enthusiastic this morning. I apologize for all the exclamation points.)

Ok, marion's post and everyone's details over the last couple of days has got me thinking. I seem to do best when I make one commitment at a time. So, first I commited to cleaning up my eating during the week. Then to workouts. Then to cleaning up my eating over the weekend. Then to upping the workouts. Then to no alcohol. Etc. I'm thinking it's time to make a new small commitment - I'm going to do a version of acemom's challenge, I think. Every night I'm going to work on my plank until I get to 60 seconds - even if it's a "day off." Also going to do some crunches and oblique crunches every night. Going to start at 25. That should be only a few minutes of exercise, but a good way to commit to doing a little something every day.

fondly remembers the days when I could hold a 45 second plank...
I'll jump in on the core commitment... I have a bit of an achy back today and I know that will disappear with a stronger core!

Iggy - what changed? Knowing what it is that is making you weigh more can definitely help with the mental side!

Thank you, BSB. I just reviewed my nutrition journal-it's definitely due to late night snacking. Duly noted and onward and upward.

Iggy - like I said above, I've found the small commitments to be more doable and lead to bigger changes. So if you have a problem with late night snacking, instead of saying "I won't snack at night" maybe try "I can snack, but I can only snack on carrots and peanut butter/hummus," or "I can only have a snack that is 100 calories" or whatever. Then once that's an established habit, try adjusting something else, like you can only have a snack on days you work out. Eventually you can get to where snacking is a rare thing, and I've found it much easier than the deprivation/breakdown/guilt/deprivation cycle.
Hope this is helpful!

So I have the day off today and I am having the hardest freaking time getting motivated. I have like 2000 steps for the day... 8000 away from my daily goal. I just have no energy. Someone... Give me a push!

Sarcastic & Ners - I had to work today, so why don't you two do a happy dance for getting the day off? That should help boost those steps for the day Acemom - good to see you're still around Iggy - good job using your nutrition journal to help find your problem. I've been using mine to cut back on sodium. This whole meal tracking this is starting to turn out pretty darn handy. Bsbound - I had to google what a plank is

ohhkay. went to a follow-up appointment this afternoon. my dr knows how much I love being in a medical office or a hospital, so once I got past the "all tests came back clear" part of the explanation she kind of smiled a little - especially to the point that having the ER dr come into my room had me ringing the BP alarms. I already knew that my anxiety about hospitals did absolutely nothing to help me on Saturday, that wasn't news. I'll share some numbers now, since I know I'm not going to stroke out in my sleep. by the time I got to the ER, I had worked myself up pretty good. then there were some delays with getting thru triage, all the while my brain is just having a field day. the nurse didn't believe the 1st read, so she went and found more cuffs. she took 3 readings, each one increasing. what got me direct entry w/o time in the waiting room was a reading of 196/131. I was pretty freaked out. as I waited, everything was steadily decreasing. they released me when that diastolic # went below 100. still high, but that # wasn't coming down any lower while I sat there. at today's follow-up appt (still kind of freaked), the intake reading by the nurse was 170/100. my dr took it first after I explained Saturday (160/100) and then again after we talked about things I've been doing differently since the last time it checked out okay (155/100) so you can see that I'm calming down just by talking about it and seeing she isn't immediately concerned while we're talking. one of the things I mentioned as doing differently was following a Paleo diet since about Christmas (mostly, anyway) and I didn't finish the sentence before she looked up from what she was writing at that second to shake her head no and say that probably had something to do with the bump in the baseline readings. the rest of the spikes were totally my own undoing. so, I'm now on an anti-anxiety med to help calm me down more and help stabilize my baseline reading. I'm going back in for the next couple Mondays - it's on the way to work anyway - to see where I'm at. if I need to have some dosage of meds, we'll reevaluate after this shit all stabilizes out and I calm down. that's totally part of it too, b/c I had a conference call just before leaving for my appt - an hour, I was totally distracted, and when I hung up the phone that was the best I had felt all day. moving on now - no more Paleo for me. I'd much prefer to stay OUT of the ER in my spare time. the first thing I bought at the grocery store tonight was a loaf of 100% whole wheat bread. oh, and a russet potato that is currently baking in the oven. going to top it with some Green Giant broccoli and cheese sauce. MFP adds that up to 260 calories. even if that's a low guess b/c I'm bad with guessing potato size, I'm still fine for the day in all categories - couldn't eat more than a clementine for breakfast and was stuffed after half a chicken salad wrap from Whole Paycheck for lunch. and I'm going to lay off most strenuous exercise for a few more days, I still feel like I'm a ticking time bomb, even though it was proven to me this afternoon that I am not. this weekend was quite a scare.

oh, and I should add that while I'm abandoning Paleo as a whole diet, I'm still going to use some of the recipes I've found. I'm also still going to make sure that I have healthy calories in my daily menu - just not going to exclude two food groups out of the gate. as I said the other night, take care of yourselves and listen to your body.

So, I started with a plank on my knees... And was shocked that I could do 25 seconds without any problem. Then I switched to my toes and made it through 25 seconds also (though that was much harder!) Also- 25 bridges 25 lower ab crunches 50 bicycle crunches

And I'm back. Well, that was quick. 2-3 minutes and I feel great. Even managed a full 30 seconds on the plank. Amazing what one can do when that's at the beginning rather than the end of a workout. The crunches were hard though, with my sore stomach from yesterday!
Chiver - am glad you are getting everything sorted out. Take care of you, ok?

Ugh... it ate my post!
Today's challenge was as follows: 80 squats 60 crunches 30 seconds plank 20 leg lifts
I survived, but that was painful... my legs are putting off some heat right now! Lol
Had anyone ever used the site hasfit dot com? A girl I work with has been talking about it. There are 20-30 minute exercises that you can do and it's all free. She has been doing these for a few weeks with her husband. She really seems to like it!
I was going to get a fit bit at target tonight but I forgot... soon I will get one!!
Chiver, I'm glad you finally got a few answers. Take care of yourself and enjoy that potato - it sounds yummy!!

Chiver..I'm glad you're off that diet. I don't like diets that exclude foods. Just track your food and you'll be fine.
And to all the 'plankers'....way to go! Makes my walking seem wimpy! Tomorrow just a morning walk and no gym at night. We're expecting a snow storm. I'll fool around with my kettle bells after dinner.

The core work gave me the boost of energy I needed to get my steps in. Just under 11k... Will likely hit 11k be bed time.
Acemom- haven't heard of that site before... Let us know I'd you like it.

Happy Prose walking is not wimpy. It is what I have been doing to lose in conjunction with healthier eating.
Have my steps in for the day
Good night all

Way to go plank ladies! I should probably start doing those again - ugh! But they do work for core strength.
Chiver, take care of yourself.
No workout for me yesterday (which I knew would happen due to swim lessons for DS), but I did get in lots of stair climbing during the day at work. Today I should do some stair climbing, plus the treadmill tonight.

Chive Sarcastic, WTG!!!!!!! ners, good job getting your steps in! acemom, my bod hurts just reading about that workout. Nice! New plan of attack: Go to bed earlier, so I'll get up earlier, get to the office earlier, so I can leave at 5, and have time to do cardio in the evenings. I love when I work out in the morning because of the energy it gives me during the day, but don't care to get up even earlier to do so.

thanks for the kind words, ladies. I've always been terrified of hospitals, docs, even the dentist. I'm getting better as I get older, but Saturday's adventure brought me right back to being a kid inching away from my pediatrician at the first glimpse of a needle. last night's potato and veggies was very tasty, exactly what I needed after a couple stressful days. I'm heading south tomorrow for a couple days on Long Island with some good friends and going to a couple shows while I'm there. I may play hockey this weekend, not sure yet. that's going to be a game day decision by how I feel that day. I will say that I already feel a lot less stressed than even yesterday. here's hoping that stopping most exercise and Paleo eating doesn't put too much of a dent in the progress I've made on the scale. I suffered for those 10lbs, I may as well get to keep 'em off!

sarcastic - way to go!!!
chiver - keep tracking your calories, you will make it work. I have faith in you! Also, did your doc say why Paleo could be raising your blood pressure? I've tried but I just can't think why it would... niacin maybe? Or salt?
Iggy - I like that plan! I can never get up to work out in the mornings, so I'm an evening exerciser too!
Happy prose - you can plank with us if you want!
In fact, want to issue the Core Challenge to the whole board! It takes 2-3 min a night at this point, and we can all do it together! I'm even willing to track everyone's progress, like a WIRR challenge. Thoughts?
As for me, well, the scale stood still again today. I am very frustrated. I now have only 5.5 weeks to lose my 9 lbs. Eeek!
