I was just thinking of several posters that I had not seen in a while. I just did a search and found out oldtex, one of my long time favorite posters, had deleted.

Ah thanks for digging up the threads. I'm an inconsistent but long term lurker, so it feels like every time I check in, someone has left, and other times, I realize I've forgotten screen names. People have changed names too. I'm going to start using the Follow feature to keep track. Did not know about craftysarah or anne either! I didn't even realize The J had not posted since earlier this year!! And I can't remember the poster who was an attorney in Chicago who recently married and bought a condo. I thought it was "queen" something, but the user search isn't pulling it up. I know Firebird disappeared after having her baby. I do hope the posters come back, it looks like laterbloomer recently did? And apologies if I offend anyone for wanting someone to come back if there was a huge disagreement or whatnot regarding them. I'm completely out of the loop in the drama department. If I see Miller the Large ever posting again, that will be something.

I used to really enjoy oldtex posts - but about a year or two or so ago, he just got much more political and kind of belligerent with those who don't agree with him. I was personally thinking he had some mental health issues, like dementia starting up, because his attitude had changed so much - so angry about everything that wasn't agreeing with his opinions. Previously - he had been rather humble, homespun, common sensish. I just started skipping his posts as I no longer found value in them. * Goes down in the book of Totally Valuable Posts*Cause THAT post was really valuable....

He used to be one of my absolute favorites back on the YM board, but when he reappeared here, he was incredibly angry and seemed to be more into picking fights than discussing things. No idea what was going on with Old Tex or Horatio, but the change was very noticeable and I was sad to "lose" them before they even left.

I'm actually back. I miss oldtex. It's gotten hard on these boards, at least for me, because we're more like a squabbling family now. Welcome back anne81! One thing missing from these boards is the stream of new posters coming in looking for guidance. Remember all those new "check out my budget" posts and all that? It gave people something to focus on, to feel useful and helpful (or I guess become the peanut gallery.) Now it's just all the long timers left, and we have nothing to pick on/focus on other than each other.

That was a really good thing about being affiliated with MSN, metrocrab. It gave us a constant feed of new folks. Without that, it's more difficult to get new posters to give us a try. As to the loss of long-time posters, that's going to happen. It happens on all message boards. People find other ways to spend their time, or they decide they're not happy with the way things are going on a board, or with one or more posters on a board, and they leave. Some get busy with work, or family, or life in general. I miss oldtex, as well; however I, too, had noticed a change in him that didn't seem to be related to the forum. Maybe he'll be back if there were other things he needed to deal with. We can hope! Thing is, we rarely know why people leave unless they tell us before they go. We just have to realize it's their choice to do so and wish them well.

I hope that Steve and Old Tex both come back, and hope, moreso, that they're both doing better, along with Shasta, and some others.
I also hope to never read posts from Black Mamba again. He's one guy I don't miss .

I think a new start yr own biz board would up the traffic! You might suggest it to moonbeam, Rukh, to see what she thinks of the idea.

I chased him away by poking fun at him for something pretty dumb he said. I was using it to make mutt feel better when she was having a rough time.

I wouldn't be so quick to argue that something was going on in Old Tex's life that caused the crankiness/judgement/stubbornness.
I've been noticing people change from favorite posters to broken records with a mean streak for some time. It happened even when we were still associated with MSN, but I'd suspect that the lack of newbies and fresh questions has exacerbated that tendency.

There was also a preacher/minister who started posting about a year or so ago and he has moved on. Of course, I am drawing a blank on his name right now.
And is Snowbjrd still around?
Welts seems to be MIA quite a bit, too.
Although, maybe they and other posters *I* think are missing post on other sub-boards. I am nothing if not a creature of habit. :-)

Weltz has been around - in fact, she posted just today on the Muffin Shop thread in EE.
Snowbird seems to have been absent for a few months now.

Things happen in real life and peeps just feel like they got to move on. I know sometimes I feel like doing that on some Boards. This Board though I love, cause there are fantastic peeps on here.

I thought it was a pretty sad situation overall. He was on a major high horse over the issue of preparedness, and had been judging some other people pretty harshly. One day, he himself was in that situation and he got a taste of his own medicine. Its sad because nobody expected him to leave over it. I thought most of his posts had the wisdom of experience, and I was sad to see him go.

It's the normal lifespan of a message board to eventually lose it's base once you lose the spigot of fresh newbies; I know it but still feel sad seeing YM wind down. I've been on several boards over the years, and all of them are long in the tooth, have had least had one major "mod meltdown" with a change of host services/owners, and many of the oldies have moved on to FB, Twitter, Reddit, and elsewhere. They are dying. I've been coming out of lurker status to try and start up new threads, drop mention of the board in other places, and do my part, but are there any plans beyond crowd sourcing to get new members? I remember when EE was crazy busy, and now it's slower than YM. As a suggestion, it may help to consolidate some of the sub-boards as well. It may have made more sense when we had more people but now...? I was on the new Not MSN YM ever since it cut over and it was only just a month ago I discovered there was an YM OT sub-board!

Several of us tried to argue against the sub boards from the beginning because the more you split the community the less busy each individual board gets. We went the other direction, obviously, and I do think it contributes to the slowness, which contributes to folks leaving.
I know I've had days where I login, click New Topics, don't see much that looks interesting, and log out without opening a single thread. Before I started using the New Topics button I'd log in, look at YM, maybe a couple other boards, and if there was nothing interesting I'd log out. I know I'm just one poster, but if we all start doing it the board dies.
Having fewer sub-boards causes each one to have more new threads and posts, and it keeps the topics slightly more interesting on each board. If we sub-divide, and sub-divide, and sub-divide, each board becomes so specialized that there's nothing left to talk about. MSN YM was interesting because it had threads on a wide variety of topics. It lost something when they moved the politics threads off. You used to post a thread about money, and get discussion from a political angle, a budgeting angle, in investing angle, some tax folks chiming in, the EE crew derailing your thread and screwing around. It was fun.
Now all those folks are spread out over a bunch of sub-boards, and they don't interact with each other anymore. Huge disservice to the conversation, in my opinion.

Agree with Dark. But didn't that all stem from some people constantly hollering about threads being "off-topic" if they weren't STRICTLY about money? After that, if I recall correctly, people were told to post separate threads for their "off-topic" discussion and then people starting hollering some stuff about not even wanting those threads on their board because they evidently could not help but click on them - just to find they weren't about money.
In this case, I agree. The mods can't win.

In this case, I agree. The mods can't win. I see that angle as well, and I agree there was a time and place for the sub boarding, but with such little traffic now, I think we're now using a solution for a problem that doesn't exist anymore. I look at the OT board and many of the threads here would have been just fine on the YM board. Who knows how many people overlook relevant posts of interest because they are hidden on the subs? At this point, I say the more traffic in one place, the merrier. In this day and age with Instagram and Twitter, you want to see movement in responses at real time speeds, and you need a critical mass of people for that.

When I hit 4000 posts, I'm leaving the forum. Please don't! I miss all the posters we have lost I want them all to come back so we can be our big crazy online family! We all might not see eye to eye but we come here for comradere (spelling) and just like any family we have our arguments and such. But I think in the long run we appreciate each other for what we offer to this forum. And think of the friendships made here and people who have met in real life! I don't want to lose such a fun thing. Maybe we could advertise our craziness

To be honest, I don't think I pay attention closely enough to notice when people leave. I have a nostalgic side of me that really loved the YM on MSN board, but I think that faded quite a bit when it transitioned over to this board. Mostly because I couldn't tie the "old" posters to the "new" people over here.

Actually when I'm on smaller Boards they are all bitching and wailing to get the daily number of peeps on their Board as what comes on here.
