Are there places that do that?
Around here, you hit the deer, it's yours if you want it.

There is an office story about an old co-worker who was late to a Christmas party because they hit a deer on the way to the place and they had to load it up into the truck. And then they asked if anyone wanted to go check it out!
She was before my time. I wish I could have been there!

The buck was killed on impact and luckily was thrown away from DH's truck, not up onto the hood. The trooper asked DH if he wanted it.

Our county highway department used to keep a "deer list" - if someone hit a deer and didn't want it, and the deer had only been dead a certain amount of time, they would start calling down the list to see who wanted to claim it. Saved the highway department from having to load and dispose of it, and the person who did clean it up got free meat.
I think they've since done away with that or required DNR to be involved because of the public health risk... I haven't heard about it for a while. But it seemed like a reasonable arrangement.
As far as Thanksgiving plans - I will either still be in the hospital or be headed home Thursday night (being induced on 11/26). Hopefully someone saves me a plate.

That kid is gonna hate you for combining his/her birthday with a holiday, though. Got any names picked out yet? In keeping with the day, I'm thinking Cranberry or Celery are nice for a girl. Ham or Bean for a boy.

here's that recipe I promised last night. I'll put it in the recipes area as well, for future reference Green Bean and Pearl Onion Casserole for the casserole: Kosher salt 1 1/4 lbs green beans, trimmed 2 cups pearl onions 2 tablespoons EVOO 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 shallot, chopped 2 bay leaves 3 cups assorted mushrooms, trimmed and sliced 2 tablespoons fresh thyme freshly ground pepper 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 3 cups whole milk for the topping: vegetable oil, for frying 4 shallots, thinly sliced all purpose flour, for coating Kosher salt 1. Prepare the casserole: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the green beans and pearl onions, and cook until the beans are a bright green - 2 to 3 minutes. Drain the vegetables, then plunge into an ice bath to stop the cooking. Drain, then remove the skins from the pearl onions. 2. Combine the olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and shallot and cook, stirring, until the shallot is caramelized - about 5 minutes. Add the bay leaves, then the mushrooms. Stir to combine, then add the thyme and season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle the mixture with the flour to tighten it up. Add the milk and boil 3 minutes to thicken. Remove the bay leaves. 3. Place the green beans and pearl onions in a 3-qt casserole dish. Pour the "mushroom soup" over the vegetables and toss to make sure they are well coated. Transfer to the oven and bake for 30 minutes. 4. Make the topping: Heat about 2" of vegetable oil in a large pot or Dutch oven until a deep-fry thermometer registers 360 degrees. Toss the shallots in a bowl with enough flour to lightly coat. Working in batches, fry the shallots until golden brown and crisp - about 3 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, remove to paper towels to drain. Season lightly with salt. Scatter over the casserole before serving.

Sharing a birthday with Thanksgiving would be pretty sweet. The whole family would be around, so lots of presents. Having a birthday two days away from Christmas sucked.

I have begun to realize that nearly everyone has issues with their birthday.
Mine is 8/27. Which is fine except my mom and my brother's are 8/22. The rule when we were kids was always "Birthday person gets to pick restaurant". I loved the Chinese restaurant in town but inevitably my brother would pick that same restaurant the week before. So I was always told "Pick somewhere else, we just went there last week!".
Same with birthday cakes. It was always "Can't you have cookies instead, we just had cake last week!" Grrrr.

I don't know how my parents did it (well, I know how they "did it" but not in graphic detail) but all 6 of us kids were born in a different month.

I have a couple of relatives with Thanksgiving birthdays and they don't seem to mind - I figured it would be kind of nice to have everyone together/in town (although our relatives all pretty much live in the same 10-square-mile area anyway).
Mine is exactly 6 weeks after Christmas and a little over a week before V-Day, it is not a bad date (although I always wanted a summer birthday as a kid so I could have a pool party!) My birthday always seems to coincide with the Superbowl, which would be OK if I had any interest whatsoever in football.
My sister's birthday is 3/17. I wanted to name her Patricia, but no dice.

Both my MIL's (ex and current) are Thanksgiving-ish babies. They are on the 27th and 28th of Nov. No, I don't know which is which without looking. My XH and DH are also lined up like that March 10 & 11. At least the dads broke the pattern. My sister and I share a birthday. There's a 6 year difference between us.

She, her DH and both of their two boys are all born in April within 2 weeks of each other. Strange. We tease her that apparently her family is like one of those animals that has a mating season.

When a family has a bunch of kids in the same month I figure their Anniversary is 9 months before!

When a family has a bunch of kids in the same month I figure their Anniversary is 9 months before! Since it's normally hot as hades around here and we have violent storms that knock out the power, we tend to assume that 9 months earlier there was a cold snap or the power was out.

DH was born almost exactly 10 months after MIL's 21st birthday. She said she wanted to get drunk, legally, "just once" and then start TTC after that. Apparently she got an early start

10 months? There's only 6 months between their anniversary and my birthday. And only 5 between my other sister's and that date.
