Being apart won't be so bad. I'm always telling mine "I can't miss you if you won't go away....so GO AWAY! For real, get out! Now! I can't stand the sight of your face! GAH!" I'm a romantic. I say this on a fairly regular basis to my DH! He is ALWAYS home. ALWAYS. He works from home, so when I'm there, he's there too. It's awesome Give me a chance to miss you already!!! I say this to DH as well... he turned into such a homebody when we moved in together. WTF? GO AWAY ALREADY! I've been badgering him from years and finally a few months back we had a big fight and apparently something i said sank in. He's actually gone a few places without me since then. it has been glorious!

But I know I'm not the typical American in that idea that you eat the local stuff, even the meat. I know I'm going to get fried for this one, but I honestly don't see much difference between eating horse and cow. Obviously, you don't eat the endangered species or anything that you know (or suspect) was treated cruelly, but different animals are more common in different areas. Cows aren't all that common or yummy in every place. I don't eat cow often, and not at all back then. now I eat chili, eating around the large chunks of meat. I think the bigger thing for me was parsing what the locals enjoyed would be considered offal here - like the boiled pigs' feet in Ireland. I survived that construction project on white fish, colcannon, and various other veggies.

What are your plans for turkey day? We (DH and I) are hiding out at an RV resort. Are you visiting friends/family? Nope. We will turn into hermits Wednesday evening - Sunday morningAre friends/family visiting you? Nope; see above. Are you traveling, if so how far? About 250 milesAre you cooking? Yes, but just for the two of us: small turkey; stove top stuffing in the bird; put that in the portable oven roaster. Pre-make cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Make mashed potatoes in the trailer.

Hmmm, I didn't realize there were specific traditions for the evening meal on Wednesday. That night, the Friday after, and Christmas Eve are huge for pizza delivery.

We're going to SIL's for Turkey day. We are expecting to close on our new house on the 26th and won't be in any shape to do a big dinner. We're bring the paper plates, plastic cutlery, cups and napkins - bless her heart! I'm so glad she didn't ask me to bring a dish or dessert - I just won't have the energy!

What are your plans for turkey day? Hanging out with DH and DD.
Are you visiting friends/family? No.
Are friends/family visiting you? My mom was planning on it; however, she decided to come for Christmas instead. I have left it open if she changes her mind.
Are you traveling, if so how far? No.
Are you cooking? Yes, but no clue what yet.

For me Thanksgiving starts this Thursday with a potluck for our Civic Association, about 150 folks. The Association provides the turkey and everyone else brings sides and desserts. Since we are a multi-ethnic community, the sides will come from many traditions and cultures. I'm still drooling about the potstickers on last year's table and praying for some early tamales..... I'll probably do a marinated green bean salad as my contribution.
T-Day we'll be at a neighbor's home with about 40 folks including kids. I've been assigned mac-n-cheese so I'm thinking a really big pan of basic yummy and maybe a couple of smaller pans with variations like green chile mac-n-cheese and brie mac-n-cheese.
Black Friday will be the at-home T-day for me and DH. I'm planning to roast a turkey breast and side it with roasted or grilled butternut squash and Brussels sprouts.

I get to cook for XH and DS - long story short this is the first time DS has been visited by his Dad since we moved. My manipulative XH knows I would not let anyone eat restaurant food on Thanksgiving if I have means. It's OK though, I have wine.

[Spoken by someone who's parents have been divorced since I was 8 and were cordial to each other in front of my brother and I growing up.] You were lucky. Took my parents over 20 years before they were cordial to each other. They divorced/separated when I was 5 or so. Thanksgiving plan is to go to inlaws and sit with FIL. No more, no less. We will all sit there and watch DH and FIL snore away and see who snores loudest. I will have my copious supply of reading material so I do not have to acknowledge football. Loathe, hate, despise and abhor football. Many years of football games as a frozen band nerd in high school turned me against it. That, and I just hate sports in general.

So, I have been ordered at work to make the Green Bean Casserole for our company Christmas Party on the 7th. My coworkers wanted to BBQ so the office manager is coordinating a potluck and asked me to make it since she has only made it once 20 years ago and screwed it up.

I remember it sounded like it would be tasty.

Chiver - I'm interested in the recipe As of last night I am dreading Thanksgiving. I host my Aunt and Uncle every year. This year my brother is coming - and he is causing family drama with his move back (from Seattle area to Omaha) in December. My Aunt called me last night beotching my brother up one side and down another (he is a self-centered person). Yeah....fun...

Well, no idea how long it takes for aplastic anemia to show up, but I'm OK so far. Thanks for your concern. Sorry, horse owner and advocate here. Not big on the current horse slaughtering practices. I agree that inhumane slaughtering practices are not OK for any animal. In the future, people will be horrified by how incredibly inhumane our treatment of animals was. My comments were more along the lines of if you choose to eat meat at all (and if you don't I understand and completely respect that), it is difficult for me to understand the distinction between why it's OK to eat certain meats and not others, taking the slaughtering method out of the equation. I like horses, too. But I guess I also liked my neighbors cows growing up and struggle with the idea that eating cows is OK but eating horses isn't. And of course inhumane treatment of either is not OK.

Cows are a stock animal, raised specifically for food. Of course there are some that are pets or used for work.
Horses are a work animal and are raised for performance, sport, service or just as pets. They're anatomy doesn't lend well for raising as food.
Why not eat dogs, cats, or any other animal.

Horses are a work animal and are raised for performance, sport, service or just as pets. They're anatomy doesn't lend well for raising as food. Why not eat dogs, cats, or any other animal. Completely agree on the idea that horse anatomy isn't well suited to meat production, so it doesn't make sense to raise them specifically for food. On the other hand, if you end up with a horse that needs to be slaughtered for some reason (irreparable broken legs is one that might happen), I don't understand why it's not OK to eat the animal. But then again, I don't think we should stop people from eating a deer they accidentally hit with a car, either. As for dogs and cats, I'm aware this view is completely in the minority, but I think they're the same as horses. As long as they're not inhumanely treated or slaughtered, IMHO meat is meat. I'm not trying to be deliberately argumentative or provocative, I just don't get the idea that it's OK to eat a cow but not a horse, a pig but not a dog. Any animal that's eaten should be humanely treated - whether it's a chicken or a pig or a dog or a horse - but at the end of the day it's all meat. There have been years where I have been a vegetarian because I couldn't stand the idea of killing something to eat it, so I completely understand that reluctance. But it's just harder for me to understand the idea that it's perfectly OK to eat some animals because we don't have a personal connection to them but not others that we find cute.
