Ack, tater tot casserole. My church social nemesis. It's quite popular here too, must be made with cream of mushroom soup.

DQ- I hear you. I hate cream of anything soup so when DS was all "I hate this creamy stuff in the hotdish" I was quite glad. That's why I avoid the green bean casserole at Thanksgiving too. Yuck.

I HATE going to church socials. It seems to be a law that every dish contain sour cream, cream of mushroom soup or mayo. Sometimes all three in one casserole. We go because it makes MIL happy. I make sure to eat ahead of time,

y'all got to stop hating on the green bean casserole! LOL. I do almost all of my cooking with fresh veggies throughout the year but there is just something about that canned green bean casserole on Thanksgiving. I love it! I also have a fondness for that canned cranberry jelly. Am I beyond hope? Have I been ruined??
My plans are the same as usual. I will be spending Thanksgiving being annoyed by my sweetie's mother and children, and drinking copious amounts of wine in my kitchen while I cook. You are all welcome to join me.

"I am working retail at the moment and have to be at work at 4:45 a.m. on Black Friday morning."
Ouch. I remember working retail on Black Friday. I never cared for it. And our store had a mandatory "you MUST work Black Friday" policy.

My mom tries, bless her heart, but she is a terrible cook. DH and I were vegetarians for 4 year and my DBro and his wife and kids have been Vegetarians for ever. Mom always tries to make them something vegetarian but she usually forgets until the last minute so it's either burned, rock hard or still frozen in the center. She is a big fan of the log of fake meat and serves them that every year.
sarcasticgirl- don't feel bad. I only make it for my family a few times a year. I'm not a huge fan of it myself.

The more the merrier (assuming it's not more of my f'ing in-laws). I'll make you some fish, and there will be veggies other than the delicious green bean casserole. What the hell, bring your mom and sister! I have enough wine to get through it (for me, that is - you should probably bring more for you. )

But at least we won't be hanging out in the emergency department all day!

I am cooking on T-Day, at my parents house where I live. We took over a few years ago after my grandmother's house became pretty much impossible to walk around in. I am the last vegan remaining, so most of the dishes will be as well. Main dish is going to be my tofu, spinach, mushroom, and artichoke stuffed shells. My mom may buy a Tofurkey and cook that as well. I am also going to make collard greens, yams, string beans in black bean sauce, red cabbage, bean salad, potato salad, rice pilaf, rice and peas, brussel sprouts, and corn on the cob. We buy the cornbread mini loafs from BJ's, and crack open a few cans of cranberry sauce.
Grandma usually brings turkey for her and my grandfather, and my BIL. My sister is in charge of desserts, and is making an apple cobbler, sweet potato pie, and a pineapple upside down cake. She may also bring an eggplant parmesan dish. Drinks will be Silk Nog, Martinelli's Sparkling Cider, and Cranberry Ginger Ale. We should be around 13 or so people, but extras tend to just show up.
Dinner Wednesday will be either Chinese food or pizza, I'm not particular. We usually go out and get an extra paper or two for the ads, and decide on Thanksgiving if we will be going out to shop. I am a Buyer for a store, so not required to be on hand for Black Friday. Our rush is usually the day after on Saturday.

LOL. I really hope it's not! It's not receptive to actual chewing though, so I cannot be 100% certain.

tskeeter- are you still in MN? All my family that drives down is from Western (central part of the state)- Rules are quite flexible. My sister uses corn in her TOTdish. My brother prefers French Fries to tots. My Aunts a traditionalist with hamburger, green beans, cream of mushroom soup and tater tots. I used to make mine with ground turkey with mushrooms, onions and asparagus with a single layer of tater tots. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately depending on how you look at it) I am on a very strict diet. No dairy, grains, potatoes, sugar, etc. So I can't eat any of the TOTdish- plus most of the Thanksgiving meal will be a no go too. Nope, not in MN. NW NV now. But, Mom grew up outside Sacred Heart. There is a Renville county park named in recognition of one of Mom's uncles. And, in her day, Grandma was the queen of the TOTdish at the Lutheran Church. But, Grandma followed the rules. Hamburger, a variety of canned vegies, cream of chicken soup, and TOTs, lot of TOTs. Me, I'd want to do a Food Channel version of TOTdish.

I make sure to eat ahead of time, Cripes, I grew up in small town MN, and I love all that stuff. I still think you can't beat a pot luck over to the church. Hot dish (cream of somethng soup requried). Jello salad (jello with fruit in it), usually set in a ring mold, so that you could put mayo in the space in the center. And sour crean drenched everything. If you could get sour cream into a desert, you were considered to be quite the accomplished baker. And bars, ya gotta have bars. But they gotta be fancier than brownies. Unless you did the carmel swirl brownies, or the raspberry swirl brownies, or layered sour cream in your brownies. And, if you make a good lefse, you're the bomb! Nothing beats a big wedge of lefse, slathered in butter, rolled loosely, with cinnamon sugar tricking out the business end.

mayo in the middle of a jello mold? why? So you can pass it off as a "salad".

Don't cross it off your list, just be smart and don't try to order "American" type dishes in other countries. It's always best to eat whatever that particular area does well rather than get their version of what they think you'd like to eat.
Seriously, in Africa the mystery meat (monkey? goat? who knows?) in local spices or the local veggie dish was always really yummy but anything they called "pizza" or "hamburger" was horrible. Africa's an extreme example, but that's pretty much been the case wherever I've been.
Local food and specialties = good. Their version of what Americans like to eat = bad.

mayo in the middle of a jello mold? why? Remember, these are the people who eat lutefiske. Lye soaked and dried cod. It's all part of the white food theme adhered to by people of Scandinavian descent. All of whom are now college educated and way too smart to eat boiled fish that has been soaked in lye.

GACK ! ! ! Does anyone in the Midwest know what an actual fresh vegetable looks and tastes like? Some of these recipes are turning my stomach . I visited family in Michigan last month and it was not until Day Three that I saw my first vegetable - let alone fresh vegetable - and it was only because I was the one preparing dinner . I lived for three days on oatmeal, toast and jam, beef, cheese sandwiches, burgers, order-out pizza and mystery casseroles. *Shudder* I mean, I love my family and all, but really . . . . But carry on . . . . (kittensaver gingerly backs out of thread) . . . .

I wasn't interested in eating horse tartare in Belgium, for instance. and tskeeter, good point.

But I know I'm not the typical American in that idea that you eat the local stuff, even the meat. I know I'm going to get fried for this one, but I honestly don't see much difference between eating horse and cow. Obviously, you don't eat the endangered species or anything that you know (or suspect) was treated cruelly, but different animals are more common in different areas. Cows aren't all that common or yummy in every place.
