Uh, where did I say *I* text while driving? Way to assume. However, I frequently see other drivers engage in behavior that IMO is just as dangerous as texting* - but not against the law. If someone is engaging in any activity that affects their driving (or impairs their reaction time) and makes them a danger to others, that is a problem to me. I don't hold texters to any higher or lower standard than that. *Smoking, eating, putting on makeup, fiddling with the radio, talking on the phone, turning around to talk to someone (or yell at/smack some kids) in the back seat, holding a dog, etc. etc. etc.

...I'll admit to being on the fence about the texting/driving debate... I don't think it's particularly safe, but neither is eating drive-thru while driving, which is legal... and not all phones are those new touch pad things that require sight... older models, with a standard key pad, means you just press the same buttons several times to advance to the correct letter and you can do that one-handed without even looking... ...and yeah, I drive the speed I want to drive, and others can wait their turn to pass me... I was there first...

sorry YES I do! I know, I know! I can't stand it either! but NOT often! just admitting I do from time to time! BUT - However! OK! a little under the speed limit the police will leave me the fuck alone! that is most important. cause they just love to pull me over. so I'll go a little under the posted speed. if the posted speed is high enough, I'm on cruise control! because it is difficult to drive that slow. AND! and not under a posted speed of 25MPH - no can't go that slow. and cruise control doesn't cut on until 30 MPH. and second saves gas. I was burning gas so badly for so long. now that I am in the pinch on funds! I have done a couple of experiments with using 5th gear, and driving the posted speed limit - and found out I can save a lot on purchasing gas, and therefore go a lot further on a single tank. and lastly - the deer in some areas! now after I've been hit by a deer. I can now understand it is out of my control. I've always felt I pay attention enough not to hit a deer. which is true but a deer can hit me! so in some areas, especially an area I don't know - yea I'm looking out for deer.

Traffic is sparse here.....As long as you are going less than 10 mph over the limit, you won't get a ticket.....In town is a little different....But you can still be 5 or 6 mph over the posted speed limit and have no problems.

I thought the speed limit was more of a suggested speed if you don't have to be anywhere.

I live in Massachusetts and drive Route 128/93 5 days a week. Not in this lifetime time do I drive the speed limit unless I want to become a speed bump. I will admit I am a lead foot and tailgater extraordinaire. It's Mass! Safe driving is not the thing here. Just ask me, I'll tell you.

Around here it's safer to go under on the side streets. We have parking on both sides and during the summer when we have a car on both sides, you can only fit one car down the street. And we still have people who whip down the street not paying attention. I'm shocked there has not been an accident yet. The main roads you can tell when they hit the town line. In the village it's limit or just under because the village cops are ruthless about speeding. You hit the town line and people start going over. I'm a limit or just above person. I also stay in the right lane. But the limit on the one main road is 45 and you get plenty of people going 55.

...:::"After waiting patiently, I then honked the horn, they finally proceeded, and I just managed to squeeze through the intersection before the light turned red. Past the intersection, the road widened to two lanes in either direction, so I was able to pass the nitwit... as I passed, I noted that the young lady driver (early twenties I figure) was looking down at her phone while texting. The road ahead of her and the cars behind her were all secondary priorities... mere afterthoughts, apparently.":::...
Yikes! I watched a driver do something similar -- he was watching his phone, completely unaware that the light had changed. We were all around the 10th in line and my lane moved, but he had no idea traffic was moving. The 4 cars behind him honked and honked, and by the time he realized that he had 10 empty car-lengths in front of him, he had missed the light.
There was an officer at the side of the road who, of course, didn't see anything. I'm 100% convinced that if I had been behind the texter and I'd tried to speed around him, the officer would have seen that.
I very seldom drive the posted speed limit. I prefer to drive the "real" speed limit -- as in the one that won't get me killed when everyone else dodges around me!
What I hate is when some sanctimonious person tries to moralize with me about how speeding is breaking the law. Almost everyone exceeds a posted speed limit at some point.

Exactly. DRiving the speed limit while you block traffic is dangerous. Move the speed of traffic.
I could kiss you for that.

there's a reason I won't let the insurance people put one of those monitoring thingees in my car I am scared to death that they'll put the flyover tolls all over Massachusetts. No way in hell do I want the powers that be to know how fast I can get from point A to point B.

I'm in a mid-western state. If have a hard time doing less than 80, or at least 10 mph over the limit. No tickets in 30 years of driving. I also limit my texting, FB and pro boards reading to only areas on the road where there are painted lines. It's too hard to type on dirt roads.
As for deer, we have them all over. I think I've only hit five so far, but there's still time.
May seem crazy, but after spending at least two hours a day on the road, and over 1 million miles on vehicles over the past 30 years, so far so good.

I find that most people are speed demons, rude, and expect you to constantly move for them to allow them to 'race' down the highway. in my state, you are not allowed to impede traffic, period. If you are in the left lane, and people behind you are clearly trying to get around you, you are legally required to move to the slower lane - even if you're going above the speed limit yourself. Ticketable offense.
I've always wished for a programmable light sign like they use for construction zones...it would be small scale, along the top of my windshield, and would display my message of choice so that it was readable in the rear view mirror of the car in front of me. sent from my Galaxy S4

Too much pink should be a ticketable offense.

There are speed cameras everywhere here. I reckon I go through more than 4000 a year in my normal 16 mile commute to work. I'm lucky to only have 6 points.....but if I get any more I'll lose my licence. The heavy fines are bit of a cash cow for government and the police..... so likely isn't going to get any better. and your insurance goes up disproportionately. I'm only going to work...not drug running for the mafia

We got our first real snow of the year here on Monday (6 inches give or take). The road conditions are "Amber" which mean we are supposed to drive 5 miles below the posted speed limit. I don't. Except when some (*#$(*# idiot driver is thisclose to my rear bumper when there's 3 inches of packed snow and ice on the road. I will creep along like a nonagenarian. The only place that I am very careful about my speed is when I am driving through housing. It's for the children, y'know.

So, how is driving 5 miles over the limit impeding traffic? If others wish to get a ticket that's them. I don't. I am 54 years old and have never gotten a speeding ticket and I don't intend to start now just so others can speed. Besides, it's even against the law to speed while passing someone! Anyway, as I said earlier, the left lane in TN is not just for passing. It is used the same as the right lane if you are going the speed limit.

We have those here in the DFW area....doesn't matter though, we have had major construction for years and traffic generally flows 20 mph below the speed limit (if you are lucky) during rush hour. I think about half the time I spend on freeways here, its much slower than the posted speed limit.

Why would you deliberately antagonize people by not getting out of their way? Maybe in Mayberry you can get away with that but in the big city, there are plenty of lunatics who will run you off the road or start chasing or even shoot at you. I've personally witnessed road rage on more than one occasion (no not me because I'm not a slow poke nor do I feel the need to teach others the law). I'm pretty content to let them go have their accident somewhere else.

I do move over quite a lot, in fact. However, when I'm already going five miles over the limit and have trouble getting back into the left lane that I need to be in for my turn ahead; I refuse to constantly move over. I don't have too and it's ridiculous! Almost everyone speeds and it's apparent with the cops constantly stopping them. They even speed on the right lane and stay on my bumper there too. Am I suppose to speed for them there also?
