My aunt, who is stockpiling against a zombie attack claims there is going to be a world wide power outage November 13 and 14. No amount of me explaining that this isn't gong to happen seems to help. I know she sees a commie under every rock! She may not be far off about that but now I'm getting worried. What do I tell her when this doesn't happen? This reminds me of those nut jobs who say the world is ending so their followers off themselves.

On those days, keep her confined to her home and throw her main power switch to off. Then you can just tell her she was correct and her world will keep turning. Any other problems I can solve for you?

How about letting her stay in her bomb shelter until Thanksgiving? Give everyone a couple of weeks of peace and quiet!

"Along these lines of a coming false flag terror event, the New York Times is currently reporting that "thousands of utility workers, business executives, National Guard officers, F.B.I. anti-terrorism experts and officials from government agencies in the United States, Canada and Mexico are preparing for an emergency drill in November that will simulate physical attack and cyber attacks that could take down large sections of the power grid.” To date, 150 businesses have volunteered to participate in the drill. This is a scheduled two-day drill commencing on November 13th."When the Lights Go Out On November 13, 2013

An elderly neighbor of a friend cut down every single tree on his property so the government spies wouldn't have a place to hide while they watch him. Evidently the man doesn't suffer from dementia or anything like that. He just doesn't like the government. Or it's spies who sit in trees.

I wouldn't worry too much about what to tell her when it doesn't happen. She'll come up with some reason that fits in with what she's able to absorb. Just love her and offer support. That's usually about all one can do.

She really is. She always been tough as n ails and this is just weird. I laughed off the stockpiling thing because, really, what can it hurt? But this is just creepy. I haven't been anything but okay about it with her but how do I react when this doesn't happen? Tell her better luck next time?

How did she react when the end of the world didn't occur December 21, 2012 according to the Mayan calendar?

I'm remembering the end of 1999, when everyone thought all the computers were going to shut down, & all sorts of horrible things were going to happen. Well, we're all still here.

Well, my other aunt is coming down the 12th, just in time for the power outage so maybe she will help her. I'm thousands of miles away.

Well I was a bit concerned when this country was a forward base for NATO...There were cruise missiles everywhere and a warhead pointed at every population in excess of 30,000. We had a life expectancy of a couple of hours from an attack expected to come through Scandanavia. My brother was in the marines at the time and they were heavily training in artic warfare. Of all the stupid things, my parents got a leaflet telling us to hide behind the settee in the event of a nuclear strike.. Yeah right. Protect and survive. My mother put it in the bin saying that we would not survive a nuclear attack. However, Russia went broke....The cruise missiles disappeared and that particular threat went decades ago. Although. There has been another leaflet telling us to stock up on batteries, plastic for sealing windows and the like.....Can't even remember what that was about There is currently a threat from terrorism for both our Countries...though we have had that for as long as I can remember. (Different terrorists) ...and the national grid may go down in a cyber attack. The London Olympics was heavily protected by typhoon jets (which were launched when a hapless small plane broke radio silence) and missiles on top of sky scrapers in the city. Its the world we live in......I can't remember it being any other way. You can either live your life frightened of what might happen.....or take a few steps to ensure you have some things in place...... then put it to the back of your mind and get on with your life.

How old?
I thnk some of this comes from the same place that makes older people more susceptible to things like As seen on TV advertising and scams... There is some diminishing reasoning issues... There was an article on similar a few months ago.

You aunt will have someone with her when the "big event" is a dud. I presume the other aunt knows about this delusion. Maybe you and the visiting aunt can talk about it a bit before the two are together and plan some strategy. There's really nothing at all you can do from a distance except stay in touch and be supportive with love, and what guidance your aunt is willing to accept. All you can do is worry, and care, unfortunately. Keep us posted as to how things are going. I do feel for your aunt as I can imagine she's pretty scared.

If you mean the "Protect and Survive" stuff. It was British government issue from the late 70s early 80s. I was a kid but still remember it. Just a procedure to avoid mass panic I would have thought.... and I don't think the warnings ever got that high. ....but the threat was real at the time. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protect_and_SurviveSoon as I could I joined the CND. Don't particularly want a government that gets us all killed.

I recall, as a young child in the early 50s, having drills at school in case somebody dropped a bomb on us. They'd herd us all into the hall and have us get on our knees, roll into a ball, and cover our heads with our arms. I remember asking my father what good that was going to do. I figured the bomb was going to blow us up, or poison us, anyway - and I was just a kid! We'd talked at home about the atomic bomb and what it did, so I knew enough to know covering my head wasn't going to do much.

Auntie is clearly a reader of any number of extremist newsletters that are writing about an event on those days. A lot of people read and believe that stuff. How do they save face when the purported apocalyptic events never seem to happen?

... What do I tell her when this doesn't happen? ... Maybe use it as an opportunity to talk to her about a need to get information from multiple sources, even those that you might not agree with all the time.
