I raised them on my own with no help from anyone. I make no apologies nor do I need to. To anyone for anything. I would hope both my kids respect themselves enough to stay away from those who don't. exactly......

I'm not saying it's conservative or not conservative (or midwestern, because hi, middle of the country here too.)
For all I know, B will want to wear burlap sacks, which I will also hate.
And once again, I don't always think clothes are or should be about expressing yourself. I think they are tools. You use different tools at different times.

exactly...... I haven't seen anyone argue that point? He's supporting zib's coded argument that women who dress "like hookers" can't possibly respect themselves. Her kids respect themselves, so stay away from such awful people.

Absolutely. I don't want my kids around those whose parents haven't raised them to respect themselves.

At this point, whew!, it no longer matters as they are adults.

I have no problem with that statement. It's just how you seem to determine respect and throw it around to judge everyone else.

I think so too and I'll probably get flamed for it but the bandeux is a tool I don't think ANYONE should use. Honestly to me it sends the message "I forgot to put on a shirt today and was too lazy to go back and get one". It ranks right up there with mom jeans and acid wash as trends that should never have existed. Brillant marketing though, the bra industry gets to double dip. Granted if I had my 18 year old body back I'd be tempted to rock one. I want to yell "Wait till you have a kid!" at every 18 year old I see walking down the street. If everyone around her is wearing underwear as outerwear, it's really no longer underwear
No it's still underwear. If Vogue tells me the hot new thing to do is wear my thong on the outside, I'm still wearing a thong outside my pants. It's just clever marketing to make me seem less idiotic.

Hey, if you or your kid want to dress like a thug or a hooker, so be it. I don't and neither did I allow mine, too. I'm sure DD did some sleaze stuff when she wasn't around me and I sure DS pulled his pants half way down his ass, too. I hiked up the waistband of my skirts! But they knew where I stood and why I stood that way. They can make their own choices now. I think they make good ones. It's my job as a parent to tell them that they are judged by what they wear and how they act and even by the friends they keep. Is it fair or right? Not always but it is what it is. They have to deal with the real world not the one that's a fantasy. I'm thinking on the thread about tattoos. Old values don't die that easily. But they will change with time. When I was growing up an unwed mother was a tramp. Now they aren't. Things change.

My DD is in her early 20's. I remember many shopping trips where I got frustrated trying to find her clothes that didn't show all her goods to the world.
I had talks with her about how people make assumptions about you because of your clothes and how when you dress provocatively some men will think you are "advertising" and act inapproproately. Its not right and its not fair, but that's how it is. My teenage daughter wasn't going to be the one trying to change the world and make a statement by wearing itty bitty clothes.
Fortunately we didn't have many problems with her clothing. There was one pair of teeny tiny shorts that showed up at my house and I threw away.
When she went away to college, her clothing style changed drastically. I thought to myself "she dresses weird but at least she's not running around half naked".

Hey, if you or your kid want to dress like a thug or a hooker, so be it. I love that this is your take away. That I must dress like a hooker if I'm not flaming girls for wearing short shorts, or branding their parents as terrible people for allowing it.

That's your opinion. There are plenty that think I'm wrong for not allowing my kids to wear whatever.

My daughter wears shorter shorts, but I don't think she looks like a hooker. Maybe it is because I know the difference between fashion and real hookers. That is the awesome part of living in a mixed urban area.

So, my SIL found a pic of me that she described to my FIL as follows "yeah, so I have this pic of Lena and she is wearing VERY provocative skirt and all that make up and her hair looks very different" And then there was a few snorts and laughs.
She told me about the pic and I just said - yeah, I looked different in my pre-baby days. I certainly wasn't going to go into any conversation with her.
The truth is, in my clubbing years, my skirts WERE very short. My tops were fairly conservative, but I have nice legs and I thought the world (and especially young fellows) deserved to see it.
Looking back, I think I am VERY lucky that I never got into any sticky situations based on how I dressed.
I did get a "talking to" once from a male manager suggesting to me that my skirts are not really appropriate for a job in a bank.
If I had girls, I would be a total hypocrite and would not like it at all if they dressed the same way I did.

Remember, I live in Phoenix. We wear shorts 12 months a year. Maybe my tolerance for shorts is higher, and I don't see "legs" as a sin. I see bare skin as a necessity. Around here, you are happy if someone put a cover-up over their bikini before going into the sandwich shop. So, shorts are downright nun-like.

Those camo shorts are the same length as the shorts the Dad is wearing.

Yes - that Dad looks terrible. I don't think it would teach me a lesson at all. Just because one person looks terrible in something doesn't mean that I will.
Plus, I'm not even sure this guy did this to actually help his daughter. If all he wanted to do was help his daughter learn a lesson, he wouldn't need to go on CNN to talk about it. This guy just wanted the "Dad Trophy" and he's got it. He has a million people on the internet telling him how wonderful he is, and how stupid his daughter is. Congrats, mister. You will never see me telling Robin Meade that I'm the greatest Mom in America, but I think my kids will be better off for it.

Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. We have a winner.
I think the short-term win of having her give up the offending shorts will be quickly replaced by an adult who knows just not to tell her father anything about her life.

I think he's a crappy father, period. But he did get his 15 minutes of fame which is what he wanted.

I wouldn't have had a problem with the clothes in either of Thyme's pictures. The shorts I threw away were shorter and tighter.
