I don't think I stockpile like a lot of you do, but we do always have 1 or 2 of each item 'back'. I helped DS pack up to head back to school yesterday, and we were able to grab toothpaste, shaving crème, shampoo, razors, tomato soup, ramen, pop-tarts, the usual without having to shop anywhere! We just buy on good sales and keep the supplies here. Hi plugginaway!! I don't think I've seen you post on the stockpiling thread before so, welcome!! That right there is "smart spending". I "stockpiled" non-perishables (meaning bought way more than we could use in the near future) when they were free at the drug chains (played the coupons/rewards game for several years). I did it because I have a lot of storage space and the "stuff" that I was stockpiling would never "expire". I knew from previous experience that the freebies wouldn't continue indefinitely. I "worked" at it for about (6) years straight and stopped about a year ago when it was going to actually start costing me money to "shop for free". I also stockpile food, but only when the price of something is ridiculously low (like 30 oz. of Best Foods mayo for $.48/ea) and only in quantities that I know we'll use before the product exceeds its shelf life. Otherwise I'm like you; I'll buy a couple of something at a good price and leave it at that. DH retired last May, so the stockpiles (especially the non-perishables) have allowed us to spend more of his monthly pension on fun stuff instead of bath tissue, razors, etc.

I need salad makings (tomato, cucumber, bell pepper, etc.) which means a trip to the 99 Cent Store. Since the GO is right across the street, I'll pop in there to see if there are any killer deals. I could come home with a jackpot or I could come home completely empty-handed. FOR GROCERY OUTLET SHOPPERS regarding Christmas coffee packaged for the Grocery Outlet (blue bag with Xmas tree on front):
I looked for and asked about this coffee before Christmas. I never saw them at my sister's GO or mine and I looked throughout November and December. Interestingly enough, I saw them at my sister's GO earlier this week priced @ $4.99/lb. (I stockpiled them last year @ $1.99/lb.). This makes me wonder if the San Francisco Roasing Company actually roasts the beans for other labels and then takes what is not sold, grinds it, and repackages it for the Grocery Outlet to sell. This is the only explanation that I can come up with for not having seen it before the holiday, but seeing it now afterwards. I hope that I see it today at my GO. I will not pay $4.99/lb., but if they drop to $1.99, I will add whatever I can to my stockpile. The coffee in the bags that I bought last spring is still excellent - very smooth with a slight vanilla flavor and smells fresh when I open the bags.

Well, I did find a couple of good buys at my Grocery Outlet, but the coffee I was hoping to see was MIA.
The good buys were at the GO were: $.97/ea. (3) 16 oz. Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage links (I took all they had left) $.48/ea. (4) 16 oz. Farmer John braunswager (sp. ?) chubs $.33/ea. (2) garden cucumbers $1.49/ea. (1) Boulder Canyon potato chips
At Safeway on the same day with a $4/$20 to ease the pain: $1.12/ea. (4) Cheetos/Fritos $.99/ea. (5) cinnamon/raisin bread $1.85/ea. (6) 20-count Constant Comment tea

I had bought some of this before, and shared a few with my best friend. I picked up 10 more and shared it with her again. I looked it up on Amazon and they are $5.99 each average price. My best friend loves Grocery Outlet, and shops there too. She can keep her lunches down to about $1.25 per day when she's working thanks to GO.

I stockpile toilet paper. With all of the viruses we are exposed to at work, you never know when you'll need it.

I don't stockpile much because of my small apartment, but I always make sure to have a large package of TP put back, as well as an extra Pepto, a case of Gatorade, some applesauce cups, and some crackers. Even though it might suck, if I have a cold or something like strep throat, I CAN go out and get supplies if I need them. I try to have enough of anything I might need, like medicine and food stored in the pantry, so I won't run out of stuff. BUT if I have to, I can suck it up with something like that and run to the store. However, with stomach stuff, there's no running anywhere except to the bathroom, for usually a good 12 to 18 hours for me. So I better not run out of certain necessities!

Interesting subject as I was up with the stomach flu at 3 am Luckily I had a nice big bottle of store brand immodium from SAMs, but I am almost out of pepto. I did find a big bottle of Maalox, with a year old use by date, but, it was better than nothing in a pinch. I do love having a stockpile and added about 14 large boxes of Kleenex this week (less than .50 a box) and a ton more free Garnier shampoo. Groceries I added 4 large boxes of Cheerios for less than $1 a box, plus extra gas rewards, and 4 boxes of Special K, about 1.50 a box plus extra gas rewards. Grocery wise, I really just cherry pick what is free or very close to it. The only negative is, well, are, as there are more than one, the amount of space it takes up. I sometimes get extremely frustrated with crap everywhere and I also end up throwing a lot out. I buy stuff thinking I'll use it and don't and end up throwing it out. Even when stuff was free or almost free, I still hate wasting stuff, especially food.

Even when stuff was free or almost free, I still hate wasting stuff, especially food. I don't really get too concerned about stockpiling when it comes to non-perishables, but when it comes to food, it's a completely different story. If I can put it in the freezer, no problem. If it has to go into the refrigerator or in the pantry, that's a completely different story. I mark containers with the date I open them. When I open the next one I mark it with the date I open it as well as the date that I opened the previous one. And so on and so forth until I get a pretty good idea of how fast we consume the product. If I lived alone like you do, I would purchase A LOT less than I do now. Having been used to buying for 3 and now down to just DH and I, occasionally I'll overestimate how much we'll use and have to throw something out. I try to avoid waste, but I know that I spent little to nothing for what's in the pantry, so in terms of wasting money, the damage is minimal. I found 17.5 oz. jars of blueberry preserves for $.50/ea. I was tempted to buy several because I DO believe that the shelf life is indefinite, but I only bought (2) because I knew I had 3-4 jars of raspberry jam still in the pantry (from the old CVS freebie days).

I forgot, I always buy at least two 48 count bottles of generic Immodium at a time. Unless it comes with painful cramps, I am going to be at work serving the public even if I am living on Gatorade, and saltines. Many a day I've been at work like that.

I had another good day on the stockpiling front today: 99 Cent Store The best find, surprisingly, was not found at the Grocery Outlet today. Today, I hit a home run at the 99 Cent Store. I found Philly packaged in double packs - (2) 8-oz. bricks per pkg. for $1, so $.50 for each 8 oz. package. AND they were the 1/3 Less Fat variety which is what I prefer. YEAH for the 99 Cent Store!! We go through cream cheese like crazy around here, so I picked up (7) double packs. Grocery Outlet I found a 2-lb pkg. of high quality, sliced pastrami marked down to $2.47 ($1.24/lb.). It is not the processed/pressed variety. The package notes that it is to be used by 1/30/14. I opened it as soon as I got home and froze half the package. I saw the same quality of pastrami at Costco for $7/lb!! I also found a 12-pk. of thin pork chops marked down to $3.10. The best if used by date was yesterday. I immediately divided them into 4 per ziploc and froze them. I picked up a 9 oz. pkg. Hillshire Farms black forest ham for $.99. I also found 10 oz. stand up bags of Almond Joy pieces for $.99/ea. I grabbed (4) of those. AND as usual, I got an additional 5% discount cuz it's Wednesday and I'm old.

Another trip to the Grocery Outlet today. I should have gone yesterday and gotten the 5% senior discount, but had other stuff going on.
Today I found: 16 oz. Jimmy Dean Italian sausage for $.97/ea. 16 oz. Primrose hardwood smoked bacon for $1.97/ea. 12 oz. GM Peanut Butter Crunch for $.77/ea. medium avocados @ 2/$1
I only bought one cereal. They had A LOT of it on the shelf. I'll pick up more next Wednesday when I can get them for an extra 5% off.
They also had 16 oz. Jimmy Dean pork breakfast sausage for $.97/ea. They had quite a few chubs to move. I may pick up a few next Wednesday.

I found a 10 pound bag of Jasmine rice on sale at Grocery outlet for $5.99. I am now set for several months, with being able to make meals every day with just opening up the pantry, and shopping only for perishables

Stockpiling means:
NOT having to go out in the terrible cold, snow and wind we have been having for the last 2 months because I am out of..........(shampoo, deoterant, toothpaste, TP, rice, pasta, chicken, fish........).

Stockpiling means to me that while we're snowed in with over 13 inches of snow, I have plenty of meal options and don't have to worry about what we're going to eat today!

At the GO: 16 oz. Jimmy Dean sausage $.97 Better Crocker Almond Joy ready-to-spread frosting $.50 (1) very large bunch of broccoli $.99 16 oz. cream of crab soup $1.49 ea. The cream of crab soup is a gamble. I'm hoping it's like lobster bisque. They only had (6) on the shelf so I decided to grab them all. Crossing my fingers that it's excellent. At the 99 Cent Store: 16 oz. Simply Sour Cream $1 2 lb. bags of Halos (previously called Cuties) $1 I also picked up bread items: English muffins, bagels, sourdough bread all @ $1/ea. At Smart&Final: 32 oz. half and half $.89 (I'll be making clam chowder tomorrow ) Not a great day, but not a bad day either. I'm hoping that the Halos are a regular thing at the 99 Cent Store for the rest of the season. $.50/lb. for Halos is an awesome deal!!

I love Grocery Outlet Sure!! You must like clam chowder. Being able to pick up the half and half at such a great price is going to make a double recipe that much cheaper to make. I make it from scratch quite regularly. I can't remember the last time I had canned clam chowder. There are just some things where homemade can't be beat. And it's raining today - perfect day for it!!

We don't have any of the bent & dent stores around here, and certainly not a Grocery Outlet, but I think I did well with what we do have:
B1G1 from Taco Bell products and from Kraft cheese
Bought 2 Queso cheese @ 2.49 total
Bought 4 Salsa @ 3.98 for 4
2 Taco Sauce @1.99 for 2
2 Pkg. Kraft shredded cheese 8 oz ea for 2.59
2 Pkg. Kraft block cheese for $2.59
1-24 oz pkg. of thick sliced bacon for 6.49
Even my DH thought this was nice, especially since it was his idea.
