Yesterday, or was it Saturday? Anyway, I added (18) 40 cnt. boxes of C&H Light sugar to my stockpile. It was free.

I got permission from the Tree Committee at my community garden to harvest the entire crop of strawberry guavas (one large tree). Going to turn it into jam . I have a couple of long cooking and canning nights ahead of me but will have jam for a good while. I'll keep probably half of it and donate the other half back to the garden to be sold for fundraising .

question prompted by a current thread on YM::
So if you get a BOGO do you donate the extra to the food bank? The collection barrel is right inside the exit door of most grocers. Or do you walked right past it have more then you can use in a few months or a year in your house?

Or do you walked right past it have more then you can use in a few months or a year in your house? I donate right at the barrel and directly to the food bank before I bring the rest home to put away. I don't believe in giving expired food, or food close to the expiration date. Other items to donate are bought on clearance, brand new. I keep a box in my computer room and donate it to the women's shelter in town when it's full. I've been both homeless and broke, so I know what it's like to be just grateful to have anything, if anything.

I don't believe in giving expired food either. Why should some poor person be stuck with something that's not edible? I have a friend who doesn't refer to those dates as 'expired' but rather is 'best used by.' I have a problem with that. She says something is better than nothing; I say something not expired is better than nothing & expired is still not good. On YM, a lot of them are discussing the downfalls with food stamp eligibility but haven't really proposed alternatives. I also believe there's a problem with food stamps fraud but there has to be a way to get the food to the hungry. I just thought the freebie from a BOGO would be a great alternative, free for me to give and good for them to get so it is what I plan on doing. Better than what is always on sale which tends to be high in sodium but even that is a good alternative to nothing. For instance our store is not going to carry a certain line of cosmetics anymore so I plan on picking up a bunch of them at 90% off and putting them in the barrel. I can do it at 10 cents on the dollar. The clearance rack is another great alternative / suggestion as those items are normally not expired but the store has decided to not sell anymore

Ombud, you're spot on. I don't believe any of our fellow Smart Spending posters here are like that either. I went for a long time with second hand things, been hungry, and know what it's like to not have any means of help. I went to get food stamps for one month only and was denied because I made 10 cents over their scale. I refuse to give expired foods to donate. Giving things that are no good and expired just plainly shows that the giver doesn't really give a damn about it, and they are unloading worthless things for someone else to bear the burden to throw away. Same thing as going to someone's house for dinner and being offered rotting food. On to today's Grocery Outlet finds: 1 bottle of imported Marsala wine $3.99 ( $20.00 on line ) 2 blocks off Hoffman's White Cheese 99 cents each 2 more packs of thick Canadian bacon $2.69 each 2 packs Allouette fancy cheese squares $1.99 each ( $5.99 at Vons) 1 pack of Sicilian flavored Jack cheese $2.00 4 packs Swanson Flavor Boost Chicken base $39 cents each 1 pair of durable slippers for $9.00 Good day today

This weekend we ran out of bath tissue, Kleenex, and toothpaste. I did not have to search the ads for the best deal. I did not have to add them to my shopping list. I did not have to spend time at the store shopping for them. I went to my stockpiles and grabbed 'em right off the shelf.

We went to an event that requested food donations. It was easy to grab a few cans of tuna bought at Aldi's to donate.
By the way, non-perishable food that has passed it's expiration date is NOT spoiled. It's not good one day and spoiled the next day. If the date marked is recent, there is nothing wrong with a non- perishable item. Things that must be refrigerated such as milk aren't included. Way too much food is wasted since dates have been printed on packages.

Our Grocery Outlet and 99 cents only stores are so busy now that I haven't found anything past the expiry date in a very long time. I have 2 bags of canned goods ready to go, but I want to reach a goal of 5 with a variety of things that folks will enjoy using. It makes me feel bad when I see donations of crap food given that no one can actually use. It blows the whole point of giving.

I think the recent regulations prohibit food banks from accepting or giving out expired food.

Our Catholic Charities took over the food bank here in town now, and I was just getting ready to donate to the Santa Barbara County Food bank, but I will take the 6 bags I have ready to the food bank here in town. All donations stay here in town.

Pepperdoo, I know that you'll be able to appreciate this. I had UPs to use at RA and the Grocery Outlet is across the street AND it is Senior Citizen Wednesday (extra 5% discount on entire order), so I decided to pop in. I found the following killer deals: Krusteaz Sugar/Snickerdoodle cookie mix (14.4 oz. box) - $.47/ea. Bush's Mexican style black beans (30 oz. can) - $.47/ea. Kraft Homesyle mayo (30 oz. jar) - 2/$.97 (Yes!! less than $.50/ea.) Honey Maid grahams (regular size box) - $.97/ea. My Grocery Outlet is now putting pink signs on the items that they want to move which makes them a little easier to find!!

Discovered a way to organize and restock depleted canned items. A few months ago, I alphabetized cans starting with Beans and ending with Veggies. Now, when a row is empty, or near empty, I know it's time to start looking for sales for that particular item. Right now it's olives, chili with beans, and enchilada sauce.

jIggy--That sounds like my pantry! I do a complete stock up every quarter then I just look for empty, or near empty, spots on a monthly basis and stock up at the next sale. It makes everything so easy to make lists and to shop. I also have a specific holiday list that I have been gradually picking up the past few weeks. I am not quite OCD but as I put stuff away I frequently will grab a marker and write the sale price or even serving price on the box or can.

I wasn't going to buy more canned soup but at that price, I did. Handy for a fast meal.
I planned on eating my pantry items more this month.

I also donate to the food pantry at a church in town. Across from where I work is a county homeless shelter. My office (of professionals) wanted to do a coat drive and bring them over to the shelter. I called to see when is best time for delivery, and also if other items were needed. I was told they only accept NEW coats with tags on them. I was floored! If you have no coat, and clean used one is much better than nothing. I identified the agency we work for to let her know we wouldn't be donating junk, but NO. I'm wearing the same winter coat for eight years.

Stockpiling means I didn't have to go out in the snow this weekend. It's a beautiful thing.

Oh, how I miss the Grocery Outlet. I lived a mile away from one in Seattle. Very few good deals in Alaska, I'm afraid, but DF and I do haunt the dented-can bin and the "used meat" section. At least there's a bread outlet here, and sometimes the prices there are killer: 50 cents for a bag of eight good-quality "stadium rolls" (great for sandwiches) or a loaf of Dave's Killer Bread. Right now we're so stocked that we've made yet another vow to eat from the freezer and pantry until we see the bottoms of each. Maybe if I call it a "No-Spend January" we'll take it seriously. All that I want to buy for the next 30 days are milk (for my homemade yogurt), fruit and veg.

Since I stopped playing the drug chain rewards/coupon game about a year ago, I now have to pay OOP for all the pantry staples that I used to get for free. I wait until I see items deeply discounted at the GO and then stockpile enough to last about a year. The mayo that I listed in my earlier post was nearing its "best if sold by" date so I waited and watched to see how much they would drop the price to move it off the shelf. I was shocked to see it @ 2/$.97. I spent $2.91 for what would have cost me $18-$24 at Safeway; I'll take it!!

Last week, I found 1 lb. packages of Oscar Mayer bacon for $2 ea. There were two left and I grabbed both of them. Over the last several months, I have noticed that discounts on the same types of products come around fairly regularly so I don't tend to stockpile like I might otherwise.

Stockpiling means to me when I ran out of shampoo, conditioner, cotton swabs and soap during my vacation last week, instead of having to leave my warm home and face the public, I simply went into my walk-in closet and retrieved the items.

I can see now when hubby retires I am going to have to ramp up the canning and garden. We really like the home canned foods so good. and I think we can eat a lot more without all the additives and not gain as much weight.
For lunch, home canned green tomatoes, fried potatoes, and some sliced ham, soooo good. Since lunch was late I just made a couple of loaves of home made bread from white wheat unbleached, unadditized flour and home made peach jam. Just simple plain good food from the stockpile. 3 of us ate almost a whole loaf of bread., When I read this, I see a perfect example of complete and utter satisfaction.

Another great stockpiling day at the Grocery Outlet for me: (7) 16 oz. Oscar Mayer Applewood Bacon @ $1.97/lb. (4) 16 oz. Ball Park Beef franks @ $.79/ea. (6) 8 oz. Organic Mild Cheddar Cheese (block) @ $.97/ea. (2) 6 oz. Tillamook lemon yogurt @ 2/$.25 (2) 4 oz. Alouette blue cheese crumbles @ 2/$.97 (1) 10 oz. Sabra hummus @ $.97/ea. (2) 14 oz. pkgs. New York steak @ $2.99/ea. AND, AND, AND because it's Wednesday, I got an extra 5% off because I'm old!! My receipt says that I saved $134.20. I imagine that is if I had walked into Safeway and bought the same products at full price. I don't know what I would do without the Grocery Outlet.

I'm also grateful that I don't need to set foot in the store till the weekend, and then I only need milk, onions and fresh garlic. I'll go to GO for that, and bring an extra $20 just in case.

Well, I was headed over to my sister's home today and she has a much larger Grocery Outlet than I do, so I decided to pop in to see if I might find some great deals. $.50/ea. (2) 17.5 oz. blueberry jam $.10/ea. (4) 4 oz. Yoplait yogurt $.99/ea. (2) 12 oz. boxes GM peanut butter crunch cereal (as opposed to cinnamon toast crunch) $.99/ea. (1) Duncan Hines lemon frosting Nothing really to write home about, but still not too bad.

I don't think I stockpile like a lot of you do, but we do always have 1 or 2 of each item 'back'.
I helped DS pack up to head back to school yesterday, and we were able to grab toothpaste, shaving crème, shampoo, razors, tomato soup, ramen, pop-tarts, the usual without having to shop anywhere!
We just buy on good sales and keep the supplies here.
