It's a shame some people see things the way they do. Rather than mourn the loss of a young life, they look for reasons why that young life SHOULD have been taken. Whether it's because of the color of the child's skin, or because they believe everyone should have the right to shoot someone because they think that person might be guilty of something, or for some reason unknown to me, I have no clue. I just feel we see way too much of it. As I see it, the title of this thread would have been just as indicative of what happened if the words "black" and "white" had been left out. People are people, regardless of their skin color. As you say, Had those words been left out, you would not have been enlightened about the poster's true mindset... and the nature of his motivation for creating the thread. Also, while you may feel as if your ("sacred and inviolate"?) lilac bush is not worth a human life (and I agree with you on that), apparently others may disagree.

Frankly, I don't particularly care about the OP's "true mindset"; nor, do I care about his motivations. Neither has any affect on my life. I doubt there are any here who would equate a lilac bush with a human life. I do, however, recognize there are those here who are misanthropic enough to think there might be such posters. I find that rather telling, come to think of it.

I find it amazing that MLK is sporting the new hoodie look. From what I read of his teachings and the man as he presented himself, he would not be happy to be associated with that look.

The look that 75% of teen/young adults sport? I wear hoodies and jeans, and I'm the epitome of middle aged soccer mom.

I have a couple of them myself, swamp. They're nice for when it's misting rain and I have to run into the grocery, or drug store.

Guess I hang with the wrong crowds. I haven't seen anyone of any age wearing them. I figured it was a gangsta look.

But he's trying to say MLK would embrace that hoodie culture and I just don't think so.

Or trying to make Trayvon out to be like MLK. Don't really know what his point is except to make money off a tragedy.

Hoodie culture is like saying jeans culture or baseball cap culture. It's stupid. It's just a generic article of clothing that just about everyone wears. My mom is 72 and wears hoodies.

I think he's trying to get some people who actually thought MLK had some good ideas to embrace his Trayvon issue. The two couldn't be more opposite. The ONLY thing they had in common was black and male.

Is it the college students at Liberty University who wear hoodies? It's a sweatshirt with a hood. That's it. No different than bell bottom pants or zoot suits in the past. It's what passes for today's fashion regardless of race, gender or even age.

Well, don't go sneaking around houses in the neighborhood watch areas in the dark! Ma Barker, that's just funny!! Am I allowed to go walking in neighborhood watch areas while wearing my hoodie if it's misting rain and I'm visiting someone who lives there?

No one feels unsafe in their OWN neighborhood because of gun owners. Some may feel unsafe because of people lurking around that have no business in the neighborhood. This is not sayingTrayvon had no business sin the neighborhood so please don't try to make it about him.

I don't think you can say NO ONE feels unsafe in their own neighborhood because of gun owners, zib. There are a couple of people in my neighborhood I'd really rather not think of having guns at their disposal!

There are a couple of people in my neighborhood I'd really rather not think of having guns at their disposal! I had a gun-owning felon for a neighbor a few years ago. He had what was described as "an arsenal" in his possession at the time they arrested him (on various "Assault" charges). He also had a number of scarred pitbulls. When they finally hauled his ass to jail, the entire neighborhood breathed a collective sigh of relief. And that's saying a lot, because my neighborhood is pretty diverse and multicultural. But NOBODY was sorry to see that psychopath hauled away in handcuffs.

Well, of course you have cases where you have proved you're right and I'm wrong. Funny thing is that in my neighborhood, most are armed and we all feel real happy about it. The neighborhood is safe as far as we are concerned. I feel safe in my own home. My alarm system gives me time to deal with whatever is coming my way. I can walk my streets at night without fear of anything more than deer and mosquitoes. I wish all could feel that way.

What... are there no cellphone-using drivers in your neighborhood? Smartphones and stupid drivers make a deadly mix.

I feel the same way. However, I'd feel a lot less safe if either of the two people I'm thinking of were known to be carrying, believe me. Mine is a virtually crime-free neighborhood. Any calls to police or 911 are answered very swiftly. Still, these two people are people I know well enough to know they should not have access to guns. I'm sure my situation is anything but rare in this country.

Well, they aren't driving if they're walking. But I do take my phone with me so maybe they do, too. We don't have a neighborhood watch per se, we just watch out for each other. If we ever felt the need for a neighborhood watch, we would probably move to where we didn't feel the need anymore.

I don't feel safe because the police are on their way if my alarm goes off. The response time once the alarm company has called everyone they have to call is going to be at least 14 minutes if the cops hurry, AFTER all the alarm company has verified their procedures. I could be very dead by that time. It's to give me time to protect myself. So we are looking at at least 20-25 minutes from alarm going off to anyone showing up. I don't live in the boonies, either.

This is not sayingTrayvon had no business sin the neighborhood so please don't try to make it about him. ftr, i was making it about ME, which i HATE doing, btw. but i think that several other posters here made an identical case, if want to make it about THEM, instead.
