"I would like to have something else lined up, even part-time, before I go." If you are doing this first, then you are not "going Dark" on the boss. Going Dark would have been quitting instead of talking to the boss of being done taking crap from the office manager

LMAO, Beer!
I gave a heads up, and I'd like to walk as soon as I find something else, just to show them they are utter morons. Would I? I'd think about it. Should I? Of course not?

L,
Have you ever gone Goat Packing? I went on a hiking/camping trip in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming several years ago with my mom. Turns out Goats are great pack animals, some think even better than horses or llamas because you don't have to pack in food for them. They are browsers who will eat anything. The business started because as folks got into the dairy goat business they didn't know what to do do with all of the little boy goats. So now they castrate them (so they aren't agressive and since they don't pee on everything don't stink) and use them to pack in supplies for fisherman and campers. The goats are so sweet. And they are truly pack animals. If anyone got off trail to look at something or to answer the call of nature, they would all stop dead in their tracks and wait for us to return to the "herd". I guess it's safety behavior to protect each other from predators. At night they would kind of hang with us. I had a great picture of my mom sitting in her little tent surrounded by her 5 "guard goats".
Great goat memories! That sounds great! I want to go goat packing now.

Congrats Dark, and good luck. I only walked off a bad job once and it was like a weight was lifted and no matter how much the stress of being unemployed was, it did not compare to the actual work environment.

Same here, though I did have something else lined up when I did it. It felt awesome to do that.

As usual, I've been out of the loop here, so this was the first I'd heard about you Dark. I don't have any real advice, and you seem to have a plan anyway, so I'l just wish you all the best in whatever you end up doing. Good luck.

DH would LOVE to "go Dark" even though he is retiring in the next couple of months. He deals with "normal" corporate BS on a daily basis and he has totally lost his patience with people who think they can BS him after having been with the company and doing what he's been doing for over 30 years. He's getting tired of "playing nice in the sandbox".

I came very very close to just walking off my job under my previous supervisor. She had everyone in a uproar. And I'm fortunate that we could live on DH salary easily until I found another position. Poor DH, he had to listen to me complain for about an hour every night! One day I went for a walk to cool down after some conflict, and everyone was afraid that I had just left for good. I stuck it out and acted the total professional and finally under the new admisistrator it paid off. Now I have her job.

Your thread has certainly struck a cord with me. I've been at my current job for 15 years and besides being bored to tears, I have to deal with a lot of bad owner decisions, which causes a stressful environment. I've sucked it up for a long time, because I carry the health benefits and have a pretty nice salary too. I made a decision to get my resume together and started looking for a new job in January. I got a few calls, but wasn't making much headway and wasn't sure what I really wanted to do. I also spent time networking and had a discussion with a friend of mine, who happens to be a very successful businessman. He kept urging me to start my own company or buy one that was for sale. He kept telling me that he really thought this was the way for me to go. I told him that I wasn't so sure that that was the answer for me. I was worried about financing a business, having income while I was building it and of course making it a success. I also had no idea what I wanted to do or what would end up being a lucrative business idea.
Anyway, over Easter my sister in law came up with a brilliant business idea. I pitched it to my friend and he loves the idea (he actually had a similiar business that he sold in 2010 for $2 million). He's reaching out to some very important, powerful people who might be able to assist us in making this a reality. He also told me that even though I didn't ask, he's so sure this would be a success that he's willing to invest. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we can make this happen. I've got a great feeling about it.
Oh yeah and I'm a wimp and could never leave my current job until I was ready to launch the new business, even though it's sucking the life out of me, but boy do I want too.

Yeah well I know Dark is a big wig and all here but in my opinion I think what he did is pretty immature. Get a talking to and decide to walk off the job, bratty and impulsive and to me that is extremely childish behaviour.

Hi, I'm new here. My wife has been a SAHM for the past 12 years or so, but just got a temp job. I make a six figure salary and carry the benefits to support my two children. But today I just quit my job because I get bored at work. We're only $1k in the hole each month, and I can always use my 401k. I'm not even going to look for another job, I'm just going to find some business plan and work for myself.
can I get a high five and a round of congrats, because its all going to work out for the best?

I do think having more of an exit strategy would have been beneficial. The last two jobs I quit I already had another job lined up and a start date set.
On the other hand the job I walked away from in the middle of my shift, and most likely not using the more professional words, I still won the case for unemployment insurance base on it being a hostile work environment. And looking back even being the bread winner for my family, if I was in that situation again I would do it again. Hell knowing what I know now, my next stop after walking out would be a lawyers office and maybe a chance of never having to work again.
The benefits are what would worry me. Not saving for a little while, using savings to cover living expenses some (and it isn't his 401 K he is using I believe) and trying something new isn't what would worry me, that they seem to have at least some time for him to take some risk.

I would agree that it was bratty and impulsive, but if you treat someone like a child, that's what you're going to get. And in my book, jumping all over someone for failing to respond to an email in 2 hours is treating them like a child, even if he had been in the office that day. Email is an asynchronous communication method. If you want an immediate answer, use a phone. I spend too much of my life at work to put up with that kind of BS, and I bet Dark does too.

spartan- that is what I am thinking, and I also think there was more going on, or more little nit-picky stuff that built up to the point where it just broke the dam, and him quitting came out. I would say where DH could have done better would have been to recognize the building up and start a get out of there plan several weeks or months ago before it hit the red zone, but I'm not sure he actually realized how close he was to the red zone before he got pushed into it.
We all have our B.S max out red zone levels and knowing where it is important. However, if yours has never been hit before then you might not even realize where it is until it it has been hit and you just quit. I know I learned where mine was with that one job, that was most likely the best lesson I learned from that job. I'm not sure Dark has quit a job before because of work politics. From my understanding it was pretty much military and then after that all movement was based on moving upwards on the ladder, not fall out from B.S

I don't believe for one second that the email business was the only thing the managers had a problem with. That's the thing they were able to use to document.
But considering the hate and discontent toward managers and "OMG what the heck are they doing, they don't know anything even though they came up through the ranks" I will be quiet now.

Am I the only one wondering if the only reason he quit is because he was about to get fired? He kind of admitted to this. Go back and read the original post. He was put on disciplinary notice - or he was about to be put on it.

Can I see myself doing what Dark did? No, I can't and my job was pretty miserable for some years. Even when I hated my job the most, it never occurred to me to tell them that today would be my last day. I especially didn't have the guts for that while I was raising my children.
However, it's already done. Sure, we would've tried to talk Dark out of it if we'd known this was where things were headed, but it's too late for that now. I don't really see the point in bashing him about it. I'm sure he'll have moments he'll bash himself way better than we ever could. Hopefully he won't have reason to have many of those moments.
Dark, I'm sure you know that many wives would've had a much harsher reaction to how you handled it than what Loop posted. Count your blessings my friend. Both of you are smart, you'll figure it all out. It's just another twist in your story. Good luck!

I have no idea of the competency or up through the rankness of his current managers. They are new to running this current contract as of November and I'll guess run it so differently it frustrated Dark a lot. I actually have a somewhat similar situation on a much smaller scale. My PerDiem gig used to be supervised by Manager A and now its Manager B. Manager B probably thinks I'm not very good and trying to get her to continue the Monthly staffing schedules and contact me ASAP if needed has definitely put me on the not so favored list. Manager A was happy to write me a recommendation and B I think just tolerates me. My situation might be similar to Dark's if his former management was on site. While for me both technically are in the building, the former manager A regularly has tasks the Front Desk in general and I in specific have done over time. Manager B I think has moved on to a speciality which no longer requires any paper or electronic documentation work from the Front Desk staff so our importance to her and her perceptions of what works is very different. I think it is fairly easy to do the same job for two different style managers and be considered good by one and borderline with the other. Managers also can be good at what they do generally but not be that great at managing certain things in specific. IMHO.

I'd say it was equal parts me losing interest in the job and not doing it as well as I could have, and equal parts bullshit with the new company. Anyway, that's all in the past now. I'm focused on the here and now, and right now I need to find a new income stream. Like pronto. ___________________________________

You know what they say about a door closing and a window opening... No offense to you, but I really think these sort of quips are stupid...just like "God never gives you more than you can handle". Yeah, sometimes he does. I've seem people self destruct over situation I could handle, but they obviously can not, hence the self destruction.

Yeah, sometimes he does. I've seem people self destruct over situation I could handle, but they obviously can not, hence the self destruction. No offense to you, but I disagree. On more than one occasion I have attempted total self destruction. Feeling that 'things' were just too much. For whatever reason I was not successful. Although the attempt was very real and not for attention. I have been told they didn't understand how or why I lived. Just that I was very lucky. (It didn't feel lucky at all, at the time.) Looking back on it now, (hindsight being 20/20) I agree with both comments... when one door closes etc, and God never gives you anything you can't handle. IMO it's not that people can't handle it, if they want to. It is that they choose not to continue to. The pain in doing so has become too much. -Sad. -Just my opinion. I'm fairly new around here. I hope I'm not overstepping any boundaries, or stepping on any toes, as that is not my intention. All the best to you Dark. (You're smart. You don't need luck. Although it couldn't hurt! ) I hope the future brings you and yours much happiness.

What's with all the Dark bashing? Geez. It's done; he can't turn back the clock and probably wouldn't if he could.
Unprofessional, childish and immature are just some of the nicer things some of y'all have said. Who gives a rat's rear? We all have a breaking point, and obviously, he'd reached his.
Now that he's done, it would seem to me that support and encouragement would be far more welcome than finger-pointing and blaming, and the speculation about what he hasn't mentioned and whether he was fired or about to be is just plain mean spirited and hateful.
For all of you who would never ever consider doing anything so wild and crazy because you're reasonable, responsible, mature and boring, don't be so damned smug. You don't know what might drive you over the edge. And in some of you, do we detect just a hint of envy that Dark believes in himself and has enough imagination to do just what you wish you could?
JMO, but it took a heckuva lot of courage to leave. Dark, there's a better work life out there for you that will provide both personal satisfaction and the wherewithal to maintain your family in whatever kind of lifestyle suits all of you. I'm so glad for you that you got the hell out of Stepford.
