I quit my job yesterday. For reals. It was not planned. I did not give two weeks. My performance lately has been shitty. I don't like the new company that won our contract in November. I should have jumped ship months ago. No fuck that, I should have left a couple years ago. I haven't liked the job itself for several years now.
Last week I was put on a performance improvement plan. I had a follow up appointment for my surgery which had been scheduled for a couple weeks, was on my Outlook calendar, my supervisor was aware of it, yadda yadda. I left work at 2:30 my time to make the appointment. My supervisor's supervisor sent an email to me at 3:00 my time. They both work on the east coast. At 8:00am EDT the next morning (3 hours before I even get into work) she sent an email to my supervisor saying I needed to be officially counseled about my performance because I'm not responding to chain of command requests and emails in a timely manner.
It's been ticky tacky bullshit like that since I started with this new company. Yesterday I was driving into work, and I was running late which is totally my fault, but all I could think about was all the BS I was going to have to deal with over it when I got there. Sure enough I had three high priority emails to call my supervisor waiting when I got there. So I called and told him that it was going to be my last day.
I'd say it was equal parts me losing interest in the job and not doing it as well as I could have, and equal parts bullshit with the new company. Anyway, that's all in the past now. I'm focused on the here and now, and right now I need to find a new income stream. Like pronto.

Wow, Dark, that came as a surprise! I hope you land on your feet quickly and that you're happy in your new incarnation!
I suppose you're not entitled to any UE?

now that I got that out of the way, did you manage to make a network of contacts that could help point you in the direction of a new job/new opportunities? Maybe get in touch with an IT headhunter or something. You are a smart guy and you're young - something decent is bound to be available.

I totally understand. It's the petty crap that can drive a person to their limits. But this is the kind of thing that can spur you on to bigger and better things, too.
Good luck; we'll be watching.

Does quitting so abruptly do anything to your security clearance?

Well, I can't say as I blame you. I might have done the same except I probably would have turned in a 2 week notice.
Best of luck to you. I am sure you will land on your feet. My BFF absolutely hates her job and started crying yesterday while we were out walking together. She lives paycheck to paycheck (which is her own fault) so she is stuck right now. It sucks to be in a job you hate. I was there once and hope to never be there again.

Maybe it would be worthwhile finishing that degree, or at least getting some classes out of the way?

Sorry to hear it but it sounds like it's for the best. I'm guessing everyone here has been in a job situation they didn't like and you realize your performance suffers because you hate the situation. At a point the paycheck just isn't worth it.
Archie - I love that scene.

So you quit, but you weren't productive at your old job and you're going to find a new one immediately. So... we can count this as a +1 on the April NFP. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/actnatural.png) The BLS thanks you for your participation in the recovery, sir.

OMFG! You did what? The best thing about quitting a job you hate is quitting a job you hate ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png) I agree that this might be the time to finish up that degree. I hope Loop is okay with it.

Wow. But if you were miserable, I can't blame you.
Are you looking for another job with a paycheck (and is Loop looking too)? Or is this when you finally go into business for yourself? Are you open to moving the family? My brother, who did very similar work to you, is now very happy owning and running a hostel not super far south of you. It was a risk, but he's so much happier than he ever was working the government contracts.
Otherwise, contact your old company. If recruiters had previously called you, call them. Because you don't have a degree, your biggest asset is that security clearance and familiarity with government systems. Private companies that don't need you to have security clearances want degrees, even from their tech guys (I know, I live in Seattle). But that doesn't mean you have to do what you were doing before- check with Lockheed, Boeing, Honeywell- any major company that does a lot of business with the government will want someone with security clearances.
Best of luck to the whole Honor family.

Dark,
I understand how frustrating the situation was but I wouldn't have done what you did. Not being the primary bread-winner with two young kids to support. Hopefully you won't experience what my stupid tenant did. Quit after 3 months on the new job, burned through his savings over the next 5 months and then I had to evict him and his family. I'll be going after them in small claims court too.
I think he didn't think it was going to take so long to find a job in this recovering economy. SURPRISE!
Will you be able to get any references from the new employer? That would be my second concern. I think employers are going to be super cautious about new hires and really check out references.

Wasn't productive is a matter of perspective. I was fucking great at the job. I was the go to guy for almost everything. The problem was there just wasn't enough real actual work to do. When there was something to do I did it extremely well. The other 90% of the time I sat there fucking around on the boards all day. After a few years of that I stopped taking the job as seriously as I probably should have. If there ain't shit to do, why show up for the full 8 hours. I mean honestly, if there's only maybe one hour of work to do why sit there pretending to work for the other 7? Answer; some bored project manager who supervises a team of 30 people doing the work of 5 needs to justify their position.

DH had a job that he hated, that didn't keep his busy, and it was really showing up in his attitude and performance. I told him to quit while he could still leave on good terms because the situation was rapidly going downhill. I think it took him four months after that to find another job, which he loves.
Did your friend ever open up the competing company?

Well, everything happens for a reason and subconsciously, this is exactly what you want so that you HAVE to be the business owner you want, right? I mean, obviously, you have options of getting back on with other agencies / employers, but this could be the opportunity you've been waiting for. Good luck to you and your family either way!
