I think you have been dreaming of goats and freedom. Find a small rural property and go for it. Get small jobs and produce your own food, meat, dairy. Barter and enjoy life. Your kids will be happy and so will the 2 of you. Leaving CA and thinking mid west would benefit you and your family. You don't appear to fit the definition of CA people. JMHO
What's the definition of CA people? Just wondering... LOL 2x the speed of us NYers! Well, I use to be a NYer.

What's the definition of CA people? Just wondering... I wondering about that comment too. I'm a native born Californian and have lived here for almost 40 of my 51 years! Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean anything bad. I have lots of friends in CA. And they're great ladies. I just think Dark needs something else in his life. Closer to the land type of thing. I could be wrong though. I'm going on his thread about the goats.

mrsdutt said: I missed that thread. Could someone link it? FWIW there are actually a few goat herders in both Central CA (SF Bay Area) and San Diego. They run their "Rent a Goat" business to various parks and large property owners for weed abatement. I've been trying to get my dad to buy a pair of goats. He lives on nearly three acres in NE San Diego County and is having trouble keeping up with all the weed whacking! Of course Dark and Loop could also relocate up to No. CA and live off the land. Maybe start seedlings for the medical marijuana folks near Shasta!

I bet I could talk him into buying a goat though.

L,
Have you ever gone Goat Packing? I went on a hiking/camping trip in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming several years ago with my mom. Turns out Goats are great pack animals, some think even better than horses or llamas because you don't have to pack in food for them. They are browsers who will eat anything. The business started because as folks got into the dairy goat business they didn't know what to do do with all of the little boy goats. So now they castrate them (so they aren't agressive and since they don't pee on everything don't stink) and use them to pack in supplies for fisherman and campers. The goats are so sweet. And they are truly pack animals. If anyone got off trail to look at something or to answer the call of nature, they would all stop dead in their tracks and wait for us to return to the "herd". I guess it's safety behavior to protect each other from predators. At night they would kind of hang with us. I had a great picture of my mom sitting in her little tent surrounded by her 5 "guard goats".
Great goat memories!

Dark, I know you initially didn't want to move, but this could be a great opportunity for a huge family adventure ... squatting Yosemite could definitely pale in comparison LOL!
Since you didn't want to move to the east coast, I was thinking, might you consider taking a job abroad instead?!
Of course I have ZERO idea of the market abroad in your field, but I'm thinking that given that you're ex (AF? not sure), with a high security clearance, maybe it's worth a try?
Your kids are young enough that it would be a real experience for them. Obviously it would be disruptive on some level, but it would be enriching as well, and it wouldn't be like pulling them out of their senior year of HS.
Also, if you responded to the idea of going back to school and / or finishing your degree, I must have missed it. That's another thing to consider, I think.
(I'm going to bed now so please forgive me if you respond soon and I don't.)

I know too many people.
The director of the IT department at a local California State University is looking for a network admin. We donated over a million dollars of our old equipment to him over the last couple years. It would be a huge salary hit, probably 40% of what I was making, but I can take all the free classes I want.
The director of the local VA office says he can get me a GS position. Another friend says her husband's unit in San Jose is looking to hire an IT person in a GS position as well.
I've only been unemployed for two days damnit. I just want to sit around in my boxers and freak out in peace for a bit.
Just to give you all something to go YM on me for, I'm not pursuing any of these offers. I'm done working for other people, for reals. Ready, go!
Oh, and I love DarkHonoring as a phrase to describe somebody stupid enough to quit a good paying job with no backup plan.

Go for it, either now or never.
You have enough money in the bank to last you a year or two, DW will be able to to carry the insurance if she gets full time:
Don't know why you are wasting time, after two day you should have had the planning phase done already. You've been talking about being your own boss for what? Get started.

Decline if you want, but decline diplomatically. Say that you appreciate the offer, you are extremely appreciative, but for now you are pursuing other avenues.
But I agree, go for it!
Believe it or not, "piss and vinegar" is a good thing in Britspeak LOL.

I've got an idea I'm pursuing, but I'm not ready to share just yet. I need to do the research first and make sure the funding will work out. This might be my only shot, so I can't do it half assed.

I hope you make the right decision on your first try but you have a strong network of options for Plan B. Good luck!! ETA: What is going on around here lately? I've been reading and everybody is or wants to quit their jobs! Dark - Maybe you should collaborate with the others here and write a book about your career changes as you go through the process of what not to do or what to do for those that get to this point in their lives. You guys would make millions!

Unfortunately, I think "I totally doxied that" is too non-specific. There are about a half dozen things that brings to mind.

I prefer DarkHonor as a noun rather than a verb.
I darkhonored the situation. Nahhh . . . confusing. Did you honor it in a dark sort of way?
I did a DarkHonor and now have a great life. Notice the context clues (something positive but it could be negative . . . but you know it was something you DID). I think it also clues readers into it's something rather specific to a specific person because of the capital letter. You don't capitalized verbs
Just the thoughts of your local English teacher. You get what you pay me.

Good point, I'm too used to typing and seeing it as a proper noun.

I'll let you use my idea, just give me 10% Here it is - Bunk Desks. That's right, you heard of bunk beds? Now bunk desks! 2 desks on top of each other= more workers in less space = big savings = more profits for corporations! Imagine the share holder value! And here's the branding / marketing slogan-- Bunk desks, way cooler than cubicles! (anyone else that steals my idea I am coming after you for 10%)! Go Dark!

Dark, I think you're whacked but I admire your courage. Good luck, but I'm sure you'll be fine.
And about that school IT gig. I know you don't wanna work for the msn, but reconsiderthe ccollege thing. Most schools allow your kids to go for free if you work there, and have reciprocity with other schools.

They'll allow you to take classes free if you work there, too. You pay books and lab fees, but it's a cheap way to get that degree. Well, cheaper. Not exactly cheap to spring for books!

Actually, I have to give Dark some credit here...his story has inspired me to make a rather drastic, but not unsurprising, decision to move on. Told the boss yesterday, I'm done taking crap from the office manager. I've been documenting her harassment for months. Several people, including his own family members, have left because of her behavior, but apparently, it's easier for him to keep her. So I'm in the process of consolidating my money, paying off some small bills, getting my first pension arranged and coming in via direct deposit, and figuring out how to tell DH that I want to do something else with the rest of my life.
For the record, the boss did not toss me out when I told him. I would like to have something else lined up, even part-time, before I go.
