I weighed in this morning at - hold on to your scales- 200.8! I can join the gym after the first of the year. It will cost me $100 to join and $55/month, but they have the best programs for me of the 2 gyms.
I am having a heck of a time managing my sugar though.

It's been a long time since I checked back in with this group. In 2012 I lost 26lbs, but it was completely due to stress. I was so stressed I coudn't eat at all, even when it was something I really wanted. That was around May 2012 and I kept the weight off pretty well for a few months, but have been eating horrible lately and working tons of OT (no gym time) and have gained back about 18 of the 26. I am ready to start trying to be healthier for the new year, DH and I and a friend have a gym plan in place. I have banned McDonalds breakfasts to only once per month, one pop per day (trust me this is a huge improvement), eating out lunch once a week, and one sweet per week. I also am starting a new "Biggest Loser" at my work. We do our first weigh in on 1/2/13, so far 6 people have joined. I will post my weight on 1/1/13 and will post updates here every Sunday. My goal is going to just be to go down 5lbs per month. Good luck for the new year everyone!

I would love to join. I am 5'1" and 190 lbs. At least I have held steady during the holidays. I do own an elliptical and get get DF to find most workout CDs I would want. The problem is finding the time/losing the excuses/ and to not drink as much alcohol. We have 2 gyms nearby but the cost is prohibitive with our budget. We are within a hundred bucks of being eligible for food stamps and may qualify in Feb.
I am planning on using my elliptical during Biggest Loser. I do have to watch out for an injured shoulder but I can't use that as an excuse anymore.
So my goal is in total to lose at least 45 pounds and preferably 50-60.

This may be just what I need so I'll join. I need to lose so much weight that I am embarrassed to write it down. But I am determined to at least get below 200lbs this year

I am paying for a gym membership, but never make time to go Its $34/month for a family plan, and DH goes, so I rationalize that its ok because its so cheap. I bought the 30 Day Shred DVD right after I had DD ($7 from Walmart), and it was a great way to get back into shape before I started at the gym. I need to start back up with that. Does anyone else have it? Anyone want to do a 30 day challenge?

Want to start tomorrow? Kick off 1/1/13 with a bang We don't have to do every single day - maybe 5/7 for the week (so a 6 week challenge total)? And it does not matter what level you are on at the end. Took me forever to get past level 1 the first time. I tried level 2 after 10 days and couldn't make it Took about 20 before I could.

I don't have the DVD you are referring to but what does the challenge entail? Is it something I could adapt w/o the program?

Hello! I'm a health care professional - a Registered Dietitian with a PhD in Nutrition and would like to make a few suggestions for this thread. BMI, for most of the population is an ok indicator for health risk but as noted by one of the poster's it has limitations for anyone with a muscular build and the measure should be combined with other measures to determine health. My suggestions for measuring success: - Weight is fine but keep in mind there will be plateaus as the body changes
- Measure your waist (1 cm below the belly button) with a cloth measure and keep track
- Measure your upper thigh and upper arm with a cloth tape measuring tape and keep track every month. Alot of times individuals will see changes in their shape and not necessarily their weight
- Focus on improving eating habits - incorporating more fruits and vegetables in the diet rather than weight. Most Americans are too low in these
- A great resource to track your diet and physical activity that is free: www.supertracker.usda.gov/default.aspx.
- Perhaps set a goal to walk or jog a 5K by spring and then share the results with the group.
- I'd avoid the "30-day" challenge and focus on making this a lifestyle change. If you set this up for the short-term then the mentality will be you can go back to old habits when the "30-days" are over.
- I also suggest making eating breakfast every day a small goal - research shows that individuals who eat breakfast are more likely to keep weight off than those who don't.
I hope this helps!

Thank you paynointerest for your words of wisdom. That's exactly what I want, a lifestyle change, not a temporary diet. K for sharing!

I plan on walking on my treadmill, using my gazelle, and my stepper. I also want to start eating healthier and cutting out most sweets and all soda. I am not overweight but I have gotten a tummy roll and a double chin that I hate.

Saving4Norway - its a 25 (?) min workout DVD. So if you wanted to do any kind of workout (circuit training, I believe, is the category this falls into) and count it that would work I think several are available online too for free. Check youtube. Thanks for the tips, paynointerest I am hoping this first challenge helps me set a good routine of working out frequently.

Sam: I wish I could participate. I have the DVD but have a bum shoulder so I can't do a lot of the moves (like most of them!) Part of why I haven't been able to do much this year first my left shoulder was bad, went in for a cortisone shot and PT, now my right is not doing well. ARG. So part of my goal is to do my PT exercises and get my shoulder up to snuff. So I will work around my injury to lose my weight!
My family is going to a water park resort in Feb so I plan on going up and down both sets of stairs in my home 10 times a shot a couple times a day to prepare me for that. At least on this vacation I will get plenty of exercise!
paynointerest: Thanks for the tips. I am one that BMI doesn't work well for since I am 5'1" and when I get in shape have a good amount of muscle.

I'm back in. I was here last year and then a lot of drama happened in my life. But now things are settling down and I am ready! I don't have the 30 day shred, but I will go get it tomorrow afternoon. Sam and Red, I will be a day or two behind, but that should be ok right? ETA - I weighed in this morning at 179.5. Goal is to shed 20-30 this year. Overall goal is to run a 5k in the spring

Ok, workout done!
Sam814: Week One - 1/5
How's that for tracking? Then we can add on a star or something for each full week completed?

Thank you paynointerest for your words of wisdom. That's exactly what I want, a lifestyle change, not a temporary diet. K for sharing! I'm in. Like sam and red, I've had a baby somewhat recently (turns 17 months old soon). I gained 22 pounds with her, lost it all, then gained 12 pounds back. Unfortunately, it seems like it all landed in my middle section, which I hate! I bought new clothes over the weekend for work as I can't fit into anything that I've purchased before. Some of the clothes will fit better once I lose some of the weight too. Ideally, I would like to start exercising by either walking or doing Wii Fit or another exercise program, and lose about 15-20 pounds. I meant to weigh myself this morning, but I forgot. I'll do it tomorrow before I get ready in the morning. If I can find my measuring tape, I'll also measure the various areas that payno mentioned. DH also would like to lose 100+ pounds. Currently, he has a bet with a buddy about losing weight, but DH has currently lost the 1st part of the bet. In a few weeks, DH will be out of town for work during the week, but plans to move his gym membership down to his new city and work out in the evenings after work. With DH not home during the week, I "should" be able to workout after DD goes to sleep and test out new options for us to try. I'm more adventurous in eating new things than DH. Granted, some of my "workout" will be deep cleaning various things around our house as we are going to sell it so DD and I can move down there too. With my "busy" season at work coming up later this month for 3-4 months, it will be "fun", stressful, challenging, etc. for DH, DD, and myself. We are excited, nervous, looking forward, etc. to next chapter in our lives. Good luck to everyone!

I did my exercise for the day. (Do I post that every day? Or only on Wednesdays?) DH and I went for a 30 minute walk. I filled a backpack with 21 pounds (7 wine bottles) so even though it was a flat walk it got me huffin and puffin.

I think I better join in. DD is getting married in about 11 months and I don't want to be the fat mother of the bride waddling down the aisle. I will still be heavy but it could be a whole lot better.

I forgot to weigh myself. I think I'm around 205. I'm down to 2 pair of pants I can squeeze into. I refuse to buy more "fat pants" so I'm going to do this as I'm tired of wearing sweats. I'm going to use this thread similar to the Organize thread and my Thank you thread. Today's goals: 1. Sign up for water areobics class.2. Sign up kids and DH for tiny tot swim.3. Eat my salad for lunch. 4. Drink water. On 2nd or 3rd big glass. *-*-*- Week's goal: 1. Treadmill twice. 2. Eat salad for lunch. 3. Stop eating after 6pmish. So no snacking after the kids are in bed. 4. Meal plan dinners so I stop using processed foods.

I did weigh myself this morning. It is 141.8 pounds. Since I'm only 5' 1.5", it is a BMI of 26.4. Ideally, I would like to be down to 120 to 125 pounds. I was 130 when DH and I married, but I was trying to lose weight then too. Today's goals: 1. Go for a walk after DD is in bed. 2. Limit snacking while at work.

Today's weigh-in: 5.8 lbs above target, 10.8lbs above max goal. I am trying to get pregnant though so I won't focus too much on losing right now, just eating healthy and exercising. That should take care of some loss and be sustainable once I do get pregnant (since active weight loss is not really recommended for pregnant ladies!).

I weighed in last week at 198. I did manage to get up early enough to do 13 minutes of elliptical cardio, and a few stretches/ab workouts. I'm hoping to add to the habit as time goes on.

I have a big 17oz glass of water every day to start my day. Just to get everything moving, plus I'm trying to flush toxins so I'm drinking a lot of water. Funny thing is I'm not dieting so much as watching what I eat. I don't add salt to my foods after I cook them, but ever since I started drinking lots of water my mouth tastes like salt.
