So....what is everyone doing to stay active in the cold months? We don't really get all that cold here, so few if any excuses for me. I've started running the bleachers at the high school, in preparation for a double-bridge 10K next month. I did the race last year, finishing 3rd in my age group. I'd like to do better. Nothing on the schedule until 1-17-16, though I might throw a New Year's weekend 5K in, just to stay sharp. I run outside. Set up the bike on the trainer in the basement. Swim laps at the gym.

I've started in with long runs; the track at the school is closed until next week. Also using Map My Run to keep track of how far I go. It's a pretty neat site. I was off last week and will be off most of this week, so I'm getting in some extra workouts wherever possible. First event for 2016 is a 10K on Jan. 17.

Well, it's been a very slow month. Hip has been massively hurting even after I rested for a few weeks so I went to a sports medicine doc last week. Hip bursitis and I have a type of hip impingement. Physical therapy starts next week for 6 weeks. Ortho said to use pain as my guide, so I'll just slow jog/walk (which has been good to me) a couple of days a week. I still plan on running Broad Street in May!

I'm having a fight with my conscience at the moment.
I am unemployed, but still getting paid through next month. I do have events scheduled (as in, events I paid for prior to being laid off). I'd like to add more, but I feel guilty about spending the money. One side of my brain says it's a good idea, because it beats sitting home miserable. The other side of my brain says it's a stupid waste of money and I ought to know better.
What sayest y'all?

That's a tough one. I would say schedule one or two each month but keep it on the cheap side. Training is obviously good for you and so is working towards a goal, but I would feel incredibly guilty spending money on something that isn't actually a "need" while unemployed. That's just me.

I think it depends on the cost. If the entry fee is relatively cheap and you don't need to travel (ie overnight stay, restaurant meals, etc), then I say go for it. I know part of what kept me sane while unemployed was training for half that I didn't pay for until after I was let go.

Yup, it's me, too. Like I said, I have a few things on the calendar that I already paid for. I was thinking adding one race a month until I am employed again is pretty fair.

Dear Gawd....what has happened to my people? Have they all hibernated for the winter?

I'm hibernating and getting bigger by the minute. The earliest I will be running is the beginning of June, definitely by the end of it. I'm hoping to do a local 7k at the beginning of August, but it just really depends on how the 2-kid life works out!

I'm signed up for an 8k race on April 3. However, my grandfather has been in the hospital for the past week, so I may not get to run it. I want to sign up for the Chicago Marathon lottery. It opened last week. It closes 4/12. I have not signed up yet, because I'm interview for a job out of state. I don't want to be out the registration fee if we are going to be moving. And guaranteed, the only way I'm getting a lottery slot is if I sign up now and we move! LOL The weather is just starting to be good for outdoor running again. I spent the winter on the elliptical in doors where it was warm and toasty instead of frosty and chilly

I'm still having a lot of hip pain and PT hasn't really been doing much. :-( I have another appointment with my ortho on Friday and I think I might be ready for a cortisone injection. Bursitis sucks. I'm pretty much just walking and barely running a very slow 12:00 pace to ease myself back into running. I'm sadly going to sell my Broad Street bib this year. I can't (safely) get back to running 10 miles by May 1. I do have a 5k April 29, though. It's a fundraiser for my FIL's ALS clinic, so I'd walk it regardless of ability. I am still going out with my run club each week, though! Everyone has been encouraging me. :-)

Whiny post! I'm actually fine with what I'm stuck with this year. I'll get better and then I'll concentrate on shorter distances. PRing a 5/10k is a good goal!

I hope something helps soon. I know it sucks to be making progress and then health issues set you back. I have a brand new pair of running shoes just waiting on me.

Thanks, wvu. It's frustrating. I've been hurting since October but I ignored it at first, which was stupid, but I was training for a November half marathon. Hubs ran the Ocean Drive marathon this past Sunday (Cape May to Sea Isle City in NJ). It was a small marathon so I was able to drive to different points to cheer him on. I was hurting almost as much as him since I spent pretty much the whole day sitting in the car. Lame.
Hopefully you can get those running shoes back on, too!

Aw, I was in that area last year...gosh, that must have been one fabulous run! I did a sprint triathlon this weekend...finished fourth, but got moved up to third due to another competitor being disqualified for a too-short run. Geez....all that work, and a DQ; that sucks. Coming up for sure: a one-mile marina swim 4/17, state swim qualifier for the national senior games 4/30, triathlon 6/11, swim meets 5/21 and 6/24-25. I will stick a 5K/10K and at least another triathlon and swim meet in there before the end of June.

My son and my Disney 10k is coming up April 14. We haven't had much of a chance to train so I am hoping we can "wing" it. I am looking forward to it and then I will see if I like it enough to sign up for more running events.

I'm 10 weeks out from my half ironman. Training around 10/hrs a week. Hungry like a horse. It's fun though. I'm scared but feel like I'm slowly making progress. My schedule goes something like this right now: M - rest T - 1 hr run W - Master's swim, plus 1 hr bike Th - 1 hr run Fr - 1 hr bike + 15 min brick Sat - Master's swim, 1.5 hr run Sun - 3 hr bike Swim - I'm down to around 2:00/100 yards or 2:05/100 yards which I'm pleased with. I don't flip turn so I know I'm losing time there. Hopefully will be faster with a wet suit in open water. Bike - I still suck. I dunno. Trying to build up my hill muscles and get my cadence up and get my endurance up. Yeah, that's pretty much everything lol. Run - Always got it in the bag. I ran a sub 2 hr half marathon last month so I'm happy with my stand alone speeds. We'll see how it works after a 56 mile bike ride.... Mostly just tired and achy. Theoretically this is worth it...... I also won't get a warm-up tri. So that'll be hard. I'll try to simulate an Oly distance I think next month, but it's hard going from 0 to half!

Woo hoo! I forget, when is your half? Hubs' half is in September so he has time to train. I think he's doing an Olympic us August. Since we're buying a house I had to say no to a lot of races he wanted to do this year. Sucks, but the house savings is more important this year. He has/will do a marathon, half marathon, and 10 Miler by May 1, so I'm not a total bitch of a wife. Me, I'm getting a musculoskeletal US in a couple of weeks. Lol, so not much is going on with me!

Wow, everyone is jumping into competition, now that the weather is getting better!
I have an open water (one mile) swim tomorrow; this event last year was my first open water ever, and I did well. Hoping to do better this year.
Now that I am working again, I can plan my competitive life again. I have round one of two qualifiers for the national senior games on April 30, a triathlon on 6/11 and a swim meet 6/24-6/25. All of that was planned and paid for last year, before I was laid off. Now I can find other things to do!

Ouch!! Will it heal itself or does it require surgery? I need to make a follow-up with my ortho, got musculoskeletal imaging on Friday and the radiology report said suspected tear. Won't heal on it's own, so hopefully keeping up with strengthening the surrounding muscles will help alleviate some of the pain/stress. I won't be jumping into arthroscopy. I also have hip impingement, so that sucks.

Paying for it today, but it was awesome last night! I just walk/slow run and will ride my bike now that the weather is better. Exercise is definitely a good idea, just shouldn't do high impact, long distance racing.

Hubsie ran the Broad Street 10 Miler in 1:12:54, a 7:18 pace! He's awesome! He PRed the 5k Friday night with a 6:14 pace (4th in his age group, so close!). It could be all the beer talking, but I'm glad I'm married to an active person. He's my motivation to get better and be back on Broad Street next year!

Holy good work, Cookies!
I did my open water swim two weeks ago, almost two minutes better this year than last. I also qualified for the state Senior Games last week: six events all first - place medals.
Birmingham 2017 is still in my sights. I need to get through round 2 (Sarasota) in December to move on to the national games next year.

Woke up this morning at 5:15 and ran 3.5 before starting the day. I am going to try and make it a habit, I am going to try and make it a habit, I am going to try and make it a habit....
I really want to runt the Hartford 1/2 marathon this fall and would love to shot for a 1:45, but I can't do that without running.

You are going to make it a habit!
Follow-up with my orthopedist is June 9. I'm getting antsy to figure out what the fuck is going on! Can pretty much go for walks now, though I try to run half mile intervals during those walks. I have been making more of an effort to ride my bike, but this past weekend I only managed 11.5 miles because the hip pain started around mile 10. :-(
