Surplus - When you say you had an excess of something regardless of whether you actually did.

I believe in less government interference in our lives=I believe in legislating my morality for your life. It cuts both ways, though. Consider the gay rights issue, where the debate is on whether the federal government will force states that vote not to recognize gay unions as "marriage" to recognize these unions. Spin it all you like, but this is the majority saying, "We do not want this," and the federal government saying, "You'll accept it and like it". If the majority puts the issue to a ballot and a majority is found to support gay "marriage", then although I abhor the concept of gay "marriage", banning it against the will of the majority becomes "big government". If the hearts and minds of the electorate are turned such that the majority no longer consider an action immoral, I agree with most posters here that prohibiting that act by law is a losing battle. You, I, and everyone else here agrees that government should, for certain acts, legislate the morality for our lives. It's called the rule of law. The only difference here is the popularity of particular laws.

*lol* A karma for that one. mythic (adj.) see 'Clinton surplus' "Homophobia", there's another useless term. It's used to describe objections to homosexuality for any and all conceivable reasons. Like "liberal", so generalized, misused, and divorced from its denotation to retain any value as a word. If the reason for your being old, poor, and uninsured is because you neglected to save for retirement, you're darn straight.

Virgil, you expended far too much energy and time and only a modicum of creativity on that. C+ You have done far better work. (He is starting to get along well with others)

lack of personal responsibility=being old, poor, disabled and uninsured. Fixed that for ya I find it odd that despite incredible improvements in the quality and accessibility of medical care in the past two decades, the number of applications for disability insurance in the US has risen from 1,180,235 in 1997 to 2,878,920 in 2011, or a roughly 145% increase in slightly under 15 years, especially since the US population has only grown 15% in that time.

Why would you find it odd, Virgil. I am disabled, and I actually am used to the Right as referring to me as little better than a leach on society. Why, the lifestyle of a disabled person is heaven on earth! Try it sometime! You, too, can get a disabled parking permit!

Why, the lifestyle of a disabled person is heaven on earth! Try it sometime! You, too, can get a disabled parking permit! I'm saying that if we use 1997 as a baseline on who the government considered genuinely disabled, fewer than 50% of current disability recipients would qualify. If you happen to be one of the individuals who genuinely cannot function in your profession (or any profession, if the condition is chronic), this analysis need not apply to you. Nor do I consider you a "leach on society". I don't as a profession. I do as a matter of volunteer work. I have seen both genuinely disabled people and "leeches" who are perfectly capable of working but refuse to go through retraining to do so.

Really? Those increases correlate directly to the financial crisis and the fact that people who were perhaps marginally employable now had no other choice but to file for disability when they lost their jobs. You read in many news stories about folks taking early retirement or filing for disability when they lose their job.

Well, Virgil, I can tell you this. As a disabled person, I can tell you that the benefits suck. Being 68 years old, I get exactly the same SS benefits as anybody else, pay exactly the same for Medicare, receive exactly the same Medicare benefits. In short, there is absolutely no up side to being old and disabled, in spite of your statistics to the contrary. But then, there IS that handicapped parking sticker to think about...

I dare not complain about the control-freak elephant in the room... Calling a bully a bully, face to face, does not usually work out well for the victimized... and the bullies GLORY in that despicable reality. "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely." "In fish and politics, the rot starts at the head."
