Well, sure! Doesn't everyone need someone to tell them how to do everything?

Well - my Mom would be a horrible life coach. Her opinion on what would be the right thing to do is basically that the correct thing is the OPPOSITE of whatever I am doing. Even if I take her advice and do what she told me to do, she will immediately come back and tell me that I made the wrong choice.
My mother is pissing me off this week - and it is only Monday.

My cousin's wife is a "Life Coach". I think she is very successful at it (well makes good money). I like her, but she is a bit wacky.
My mom told me that she wrote a book that basically says if you are sick (cold, flu, cancer, etc.) it is because you do not have enough positive energy in your body due to negative thoughts. So I guess I should just stop spending money on cold medicine and buy her book (sarcasm here!)

I have some friends that are deep into the woo. They have a life coach/intuitive and use hypnosis to examine their past lives. They believe in aliens and go to seminars where they can see ghosts, or something. One is studying to be a shaman. They are a fun couple.

Isn't "Life Coach" just a way to be an unlicensed therapist?

My sister does love Chocolate...I never knew my Mom gave equal grief to her though. I thought she saved all her criticism for me.
Oh wait - her criticism is never ending. She doesn't need to ration it.

Oh no - my mother is very kind and generous with people outside her family - at least to their faces. She volunteers for all kinds of organizations that help people that are in a rough spot, and she expresses an unending about of grief for people who have a hard lot in life, but then proceeds to call her daughters and cut them off at the knees.
I'm actually beginning to wonder if this is a life lead with no confidence. Since she questions every decision - critically, it would make sense that she would criticially question any decision that was the opposite of the last decision. At least that is what I'm telling myself after listening to her bemoun her poor grandchildren for the past 10 years because having a working mom just puts their life into the shitter, and then when I told her I'm going to part time so I can put the kids on the bus in the morning and pick them up from the bus in the afternoon - and she response with "Why would you do that! Can't you keep working?" What the hell? How did I not see that coming?

My mom has never given me grief for working, I'm pretty sure that she thinks I suck so much as a parent that they're better off spending less time with me

I think some people just thrive on complaining. I can understand how infuriating it must be, though. I have one coworker who will tell me to do A on Monday, and then on Friday it's "Why did you do A?!? You were supposed to do B!!" A lot easier to shake off when you don't have an emotional attachment to the person.

I do have more than one sister - but neither of them have worked a day since their children were born. Now they are empty nesters, and still not working. I'm the black sheep.

Well darn, maybe we're distant cousins though Neither of my sisters have kids. One probably never will and one is waiting on her 1st one to arrive this spring.

Maybe you will luck out, and having another grandbaby will split the criticism. But, I found that my mother had no problem thinking my sister was doing it wrong - raising the kids too overprotected, and too conservative, and also thinking that I was doing it wrong - trusting my kids and raising them godless.
I commend her on her openmindedness on all the ways people can be wrong.

A life coach. I always picture some over the hill former high school athlete, who wears those stupid little shorts with the thick elastic waste band and buttons. You guys know what I'm talking about. Like every cliched gym teacher in high school movies. The shorts are always the same color as the shirt and baseball cap. They wear a whistle on a lanyard around their neck, even like out to dinner and stuff. And once or twice a week they yell at you using a lot of sports metaphors that have nothing to do with anything, then slap you on the ass and tell you to go out and make them proud.
And other people pay for this service. People be crazy.

I highly doubt this sister will do any wrong, she's the baby. She's the one that went to college and has a good job and bought a house and did everything right and perfect. In the mean time, I can do no right.
Middle child doesn't do much right either but seems to get forgiven quicker. Oh, and she doesn't care if mom is whining, she does a much better job of ignoring mom's rants.

I'm not sure what you're refering to, but yeah, I've read a few articles where "life coaches" are mentioned.
Seems like the biggest waste of a career I can think of. I mean, what type of training does it take to be a life coach? Anyone can look at someone else's life and offer advice.

Why are there life coaches that get paid when you can go on an internet message board for free? You guys are my life coaches, and are always happy to offer advice free of charge

Just remember when doing the life coach thing that all problems can be solved by more optimism. Everything from being stuck in a rut to career wise to having incurable cancer and two weeks to live. If you just look on the bright side hard enough everything will work out in the end. It's like being a school guidance counselor without all the college and STD talks.
On the pet psychic side remember to charge an arm and a leg. Anybody stupid enough to hire you in the first place clearly has way more money than brains, so get 'em good.

There are some licensed therapists that advertise as life coaches. They're not all quacks. The difference between therapy and coaching is therapy is talking about the past and analyzing how you feel about things while coaching is more about setting goals and coming up with a plan for the future.
Depending on the problem you're having, our group (and other message boards) don't always make the best life coaches.
