I hear what Shoobs and Zib are saying, but we also see the blended families occurring, and it seems over all, it works out. Here in Indiana we have a lot of Eastern European families that had super strong ethnic ties and religion. It took a couple of generations, but even they are blending into the mainstream. Same for the Spanish Americans. We just have to figure out how Islamist faith families can blend and "bend" a little.
In the meantime, the government has to keep their eyes and ears open and screw the politically correct thesis they insist on.

Being against ILLEGAL immigration is the not the same thing as being against immigration. We have LAWS. We have far more liberal immigration policies than other countries. Let's give all the illegal one way tickets to Canada and then see what the Canadians think who overwhelmingly seem to spend a LOT of time on message boards criticizing America.

In the meantime, the government has to keep their eyes and ears open and screw the politically correct thesis they insist on. Islamic families do blend and "bend", VB. Just as not all Spanish Americans, or Eastern Europeans living here discard their cultures and conform to our ways, neither do Islamic families. Many, however, do. We just don't read about them in the news. I know several families who have integrated quite well into our culture. Over the years, I had several Muslim patients, some of whom were visiting relatives here (I usually got these patients since I could understand and speak a wee bit of Arabic). The relatives of the visiting patients were quite helpful in explaining to the frightened patient what was going on when I was unable to do so. Knowing their culture, I was often taken aback by the willingness of a visiting patient to accept our ways of delivering care (very different than theirs). Just because the Islamic family down the street, or across town doesn't make the headlines doesn't mean they don't exist. They do. In fact, in my experience, they're the majority.

Just because the Islamic family down the street, or across town doesn't make the headlines doesn't mean they don't exist. They do. In fact, in my experience, they're the majority. The blending and bending goes both ways. It takes a couple of generations. Actually more than that. The Irish who immigrated here did not expect to mix with the Protestants. Same for Italians. Greek orthodox did not expect the process to happen. Jewish immigrants never thought it would happen. I remember the ethnic eastern European families. Hardcore, spoke the old language, etc. No blending considered or even accepted. The kids, a different story. Their kids, more so. I sort of relate this to the old country religious ways. The celebration and church services change some, slowly, over time. Look at our Catholic church services. Latin was required. Now that would be down right scary if they went back to it. You have to remember, the blending came in from the other side of the family, but also occurred on the ethnic side. It is a slow process. The Muslim/Islamist faith are the ones who have to accept the process. Eventually it happens, but the bending is a two party process. And no, I do not expect the Islamist faith to disappear here through assimilation. I just expect it to become acceptable in mainstream America. It better happen.

There are no spirited debates about communism, socialized health care, the evils of secularization, gay marriage or abortion. People are fine with it.
(Just don't mention your favourite hockey team. Them's fighting words.)
It's much more fun to come here and watch heads explode.

We are going to "lose our culture" immigrants or not. I don't think the culture of the US is the same as it was 50 years ago. And it won't be the same 50 years from now. We are a nation built on immigration. We have to be reasonable here.
Illegal immigrants are a problem for a variety of reasons, but maybe the process is too hard or expensive or cumbersome. I believe our process for legal immigration should be examined before we start shooting people.

I was surprised to learn it's one of the more heavily armed states.

Ok, I admit not everyone is happy with the ACA. especially the ones who pushed it and figured they would not be affected by it monetarily. Same sex marriage? I thought you said "narried". I thought that was a euphemism for being nagged to death!

Myself as one of the "immigrants" that tries to adapt or "bend" I'm still having a heck of a time trying to figure out "the American culture" Would one of you be so kind as to explain to me what in fact you see as "American culture"? I must specify that I will not accept something that is of English, German, Dutch, Hispanic/Latino, Greek, Italian, Eastern European, Asian or African provenience or rooted in any of those cultures. Something that is absolutely, cleanly, indubitably American! Any offers?
By the way, I'm giving you the heads up:I entered the U.S. illegaly, walking across the border in the dead of the night.

All funy! Thanks for playing! My idea of american culture is this melting pot of all colors and creeds and traditions. We could pick and choose whatever we feel like it fits us and go with it without being judgmental of others and I think that's just great. And I mentioned the "illegal" thing just to prove that those comming that way might be doing it because they don't have a choice and they are by far the "less" criminal of the bunch. Except for the ilegal entry which is in itself a crime! As an illegal you try to keep it to yourself, stay off the radar of the law enforcement so you will try to avoid anything that would put you on the spot.

As an illegal you try to keep it to yourself, stay off the radar of the law enforcement so you will try to avoid anything that would put you on the spot. I'm not accusing you of anything, but staying off the radar is one of the problems of illegal immigrants. Often times they pay no taxes - because that would put them on the radar. Or, if they need services, they don't use their real names - because that would put them on the radar. They drive without licenses and insurance - so they can stay off the radar. Because so much funding and what-not is tied to census data, having large numbers of illegal immigrants staying off the radar, we don't effectively use our resources to serve the public. As individuals, I don't have a problem with most people's story. But as a large group, it isn't the best thing for the USA. That is why I would really like to see the process improved for legal immigration. Please come, please be part of our country, but let's all be responsible.
