I've pretty much confined myself to the Money & Politics section. Hot Topics might expose me to those nutty EE folks. I'm fragile. Pronounced FRA-GEEEL-A in Italian.

"Destroying unicorns is actually quite simple. Place a single pea on the ground and then stack 24,901 mattresses on top of it. Then get the unicorn to sleep on the top of the stack for a single night." Assuming that the mattresses are about a foot thick, we'd need to drop it from a 747 to get it up there. Wait.......can unicorns fly? Some can, but I think they need to be royalty and female. The only three I'm aware of are the Princesses Cadance, Celestia, and Luna.

WHAT DOES THIS THREAD HAVE TO DO WITH MARKET TALK? I believe this post goes against the intent of the thread. I therefore felt obligated to report it as off topic.

Certainly not someone well rounded enough to frequent all the boards (or at least any that they get led to in Hot Topics). That is a goal worth striving for IMO.

"Yes it does. The first year Voldemort is feeding on them in the forrest in order to stay alive until he can get the Stone. My 8 year old recently finished the first book. We watched the movie together within the last month. " Hey Driftr, I didn't figure you for a Potter fan....not that there's anything wrong with that........ My library includes all the works of J K Rowling and J R R Tolkien. You'll also find plenty more if those aren't up your ally. Donaldson next to Dostoevsky. Hemingway & Hesse right beside Hoff. Plenty of Ambrose, a couple McCarthy, all the Stephenson I have found and even a Covey in there for good measure. And no, I'll never own a Kindle. wow i thought my reading habits were running the gamut karma dude!

My mother has always been an avid reader. We all are. It's a family trait. Now, she's nearly blind and can't read anymore. Her Kindle reads to her. It's not the same, and she acknowledges that; however, she still has her books, and can still challenge her mind to learn and to imagine the pictures drawn by words.

When my brother was recently stationed in DC he had a pretty long train ride from Burke each day and he got into listening to books on tape. The thought of lugging Cryptonomicon around each day might cause me to change my mind if I were in a similar situation.

If you are impressed with how well-rounded I am here, you should see me in person. Self-deprecating humor is probably my favorite kind. Followed closely by people running into each other with those big bouncy balls and getting knocked on their rear.

You should watch Wipe Out. We did for a while. It was pretty funny. If they'd just show everyone complete the entire first course, that would have been great. I quickly grew tired of the other parts where they narrow the field down. I understand it's to win a prize, but it didn't interest me. The kids liked it for a while too. Now that they're both in school though, that part of the night is reserved for reading before bed. Recently I've watched a show on MTV called Ridiculousness. While I can't condone what happens on it, and I can almost feel the IQ points dripping out my ear as I watch it, I can tell you that if people doing stupid things on tape makes you laugh, you will think this show is funny. Yes, Idiocracy lives. Yes, it annoys me that I think this show is funny.

One only has to watch Fear Factor to know that, not only does "stupid" live, it thrives.

The Kindle, and its clones, has really done something for those who like to read. It's made even the most daunting tomes portable. War and Peace in a clutch purse is an amazing thought! Yet, to me, what makes me love them is the ability they give those who lose their eyesight to continue to share in the joy of "reading". Perhaps, I'm most taken by that aspect because I've seen what it's done for mother. I bought a few for the hospital, so they'd have them if they need them. Just bought some classics and loaded them and created accounts for them. Since, others have added books to them.

Tom Clancy. I have his first 13 sitting there in all their hard cover glory. Didn't realize he had a 14th out. I'll need to keep an eye out for it next time we head over to Half-Priced.

Update - Just did a little reading up on the latest Clancy. Come to find that it's a collaboration. And led me to reviewing the last couple he did on his own. I had forgotten how bad they were (not being able to recall the stories in them should have been a good clue). Won't be buying any more Clancy, but will remember the first 11 fondly.

I can seperate good storytellers from good literature
I appreciate the latter, but love the storytellers
Clancy is in that vein....
About the only thing you wont find in my collections is suspense/horror
My wife loves Stephen King....but i just cant get there
But a glass of chardonnay, and a good book by the fire, and my puppy at my feet, makes for a very nice afternoon

I love some of Stephen King's work. I'm afaid he, like so many others, started worrying about the quantity of work he put out instead of the quality of work he put out.

I didn't like Cujo. I don't like any book where the dog dies. I'm guessing "Old Yeller" isn't on your list then either? Tough book to read as a kid and watch when it was made into a movie. Still cry about it ... What about "Big Red"? Ya know what dirftr? Seems a lot of the far out schemes Tom Clancy and other techno thriller authors have written about seem to be true or at least more plausible everyday. Still can't find the picture of our unicorn. Course more and more things seem to be hiding themselves from me, car keys, cell phone, etc.
