I get a max of 48 hours a year that I can store. I would like to save them up for migraine days or days I have to stay in a bathroom. My point is that I cant just stay home for every illness. I run out of leave before illness. I had a year of working that I missed over 100 days for illness. Thankfully i had fmla leave. My employer now, is not requiredto provide fmla. *shakes head again* Sounds like another poor decision on your part. You know you're sick all the time, yet you chose to work at a place with a crappy sick leave policy and don't have to provide FMLA. And don't have health insurance

And don't have health insurance Oh yea. I forgot about that. She's just one car accident/sickness/whatever away from bankruptcy. Good thing she has a crystal ball and knows that won't happen to her. I don't want to hijack this thread, so... I'm moving on.

My coworkers are probably silently cussing me today.
I am trying not to hack up my lungs and I had to run out and get more tissues at lunch. My allergies are trying to kill me today.

I haven't read all of the replies, so I'm sorry if this has been said. The problem is that we give employees contradictory messages. I am in accounting, and have very strict deadlines every month. "Get this done by this day, this done by this day, etc. etc., and oh yeah, don't come in if you're sick." You can't have it both ways. If I get sick the last week of the month I'm golden, other than that, I'm SOL.

I may not stay long here, but it got my foot in the door.

I don't really get sick. I've really only had a fever once as an adult and that was with a stomach bug that left me in bed (or on the toilet) for 3 days. I've had some bad colds that have sent me home from work. I usually have allergies that flare up once a year that make me look like a sicky, but i'm not. I have felt really lousy being pregnant this time, but I've sucked it up at work despite throwing up at work because of some crazy deadlines this summer. My boss ended up being out of town for 3 weeks this summer and I was the only capable of doing my job, so I had to stay put and try my best. But everyone knew I wasn't contagious, just pregnant. With a use it or lose PTO policy, it is kind of a pain to get sick, because you want to leave a little for the end of the year just in case, but not too much. The only time I was really sick it was the week before Christmas, I fortunately had a ton of PTO left to waste (this was when DH was still working and he didn't have as much, so I didn't want to take time off without him). No one I work with gets sick often either. If they are truly sick, they do stay home. But only two of us have kids and mine stays home with dad, so only one has kids in school. Plus minimal contact with the general public and we tend to open windows and get fresh air in our office a lot (more so in the winter than in the summer because we have a wall of west facing and south facing windows that warm up the office even on super cold days). All those things combined put us at a lower risk of getting every bug on the planet and I think we are in general just healthy (lucky) people.

I think it's the definition of sick. If you have bronchitis, pneumonia - by all means, stay home. If you have a fever of 99 and feel a little sniffly, please come in and get your work done.

I hate when people come to work and are sick. And then they stay and share all their nasty germs. I can hear the lady that sits way across the floor, coughing and hacking and sniffling and blowing her nose. I keep just thinking "Great - next week, that will be me." It is almost like you can see the germs crawling through the air, and there is no way to escape them. BOOOOOOOOOOOOO! At what point do you call it, and not go to work? Are you able to work from home as to not share your misfortune? Do you ever hold sick time against employees? My absolute rule is fever = call in. I'll go to work with sniffles or coughing but will not "share" if I'm running a fever. Now, if I'm not running a fever but feeling really run down/achy with the cough/sniffles, I'll also call in because I know I won't be productive. I have a company issued laptop that I keep at home so I can do anything that can't wait but those tasks are usually little things that take only a few minutes. I've been fortunate to have bosses that are good about sick time for me and were good about me needing to miss for sick children. In my 20's I was paranoid about missing to much time for my kids because I didn't want to put my job at risk. And I'd work even if I was sick because I was living with my mom and she had a tendency to want me up and moving when all I had the energy for was moving from the couch to bed to sleep. Once I was in my own place and the kids were older, I learned to take those sick days and really rest up when needed.
