Unless I have a fever I go in. But I keep to myself and make sure to wipe down everything I touch with sanitizing wipes before I leave. We have a generous sick time policy, but management has a very poor opinion of those who use it often. I have heard enough bitching about other people so I make sure my butt is there. If I can get everything done before noon, then I will leave early (which, to be honest, most days I am done with my work by noon anyway).

In my office, if you are tossing your cookies or on your death bed stay home- but if you have a cold, your butt better be here. I've worked at 3 CPA firms preparing taxes. The two that didn't pay sick time had this policy. The guy that did pay sick time had the policy of stay away, I don't want you contaminating the entire office. There's too much work to be done.

Last month I had a respiratory infection. I asked my doctor if I was contagious because I have a baby in the house. She said I was. A few days later it was worse instead of better and I went to urgent care because my doctor was closed. I asked again if I was contagious, he said yes. And sent me back to work. So I went. There's no way to stay away from my coworkers so I just told them I was contagious. I felt like crap and didn't want to spread my germs, but I couldn't just stay home without a doctor saying it was needed.
We get a fairly generous amount of sick leave, but you can still catch hell if you use it. My job is really weird about sick leave, so people come to work sick all the time.

The last time I had bronchitis ( mini-pneumonia it was so bad ), I stayed off of work for four days. My employers knew how sick I was, and that I was coughing, hacking and pretty contagious. During that four-day period, I went to the doctor twice. I was put on antibiotics and sent back to work by the fifth day. Over the next two or three weeks, I was placed on three different kinds of antibiotics. I had gone back to the doctor or urgent care two more times, and had plenty of other medications, both over-the-counter and prescribed. I had to work with my terrible cough because my physician had cleared me for work. I told my co-workers that I had no choice but to come back to work, that I wasn't supposed to be contagious, and that I was very sorry but that they knew how the hospital policy on sick time ran. They all understood that I was sick and bitter but really what choice did I have ? I stayed in my cube....

It drives me insane when people send their kids to school sick. I have nearly caught the Black Plague from them. Once semester I had strep, flu, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Which then caused me to have to take a bunch of time off work and school. I have had children projectile vomit the minute they walk into the classroom. I will send them home and then the parents will send them to school again the next day...rinse and repeat. Drives me insane. Last year I had a parent that kept sending her kid to school with a contagious staph infection on his hands and face!!!

Well I did finish most of my work yesterday evening and called in sick today to avoid spreading my germs. I have a cold, though, so I can't decide if I'm doing the right thing or should "get my ass into the office."

Well, DF has a compromised immune system and his secretary came to work sick. He got it from her and then gave it to me. But people are out here hacking away because, God forbid, they miss a shopping expedition.

Mid - I know you have said a few times that no one else in the office can do your job but have you talked to your supervisor about doing some cross-training? I only ask because I am a big advocate of it due to a past experience where a co-worker was the only one who knew how to do her job and an emergency happened that required her to be out of the office for a month. No one in the office had any idea how to do her job but it needed to be done so another co-worker and I just kind of flew by the seat of our pants and figured it out. There a lot of things that could happen which would require someone to be out of the office for an extended amount of time (e.g. car accident) and cross-training can really come in handy.

Oh yeah, sick kids. My grandson went to daycare for the first time a few weeks ago. After his first full week, he got sick. 2 doctors visits, an urgent care visit, an ER visit, and another ER visit resulting in hospital admittance later, we finally got a diagnosis. Rotovirus. It really did a number on him and he's just now starting to get better. Guess who caught it last week? Me. Definitely did not go to work with that one.

Almost, that's a good idea... I do have SOPs out the wazoo for both jobs in case I get hit by a bus... the problem is the day-to-day stuff with no one to pick up the slack. One of my main projects didn't really exist until I started working there so no one else knows what it is But the only "urgent" aspect of that one is payroll, and my assistant can handle that. The other one, my boss can do everything I do (and better) but she is constantly swamped, and it is in litigation so there are more strict deadlines. It wouldn't be so bad if I weren't technically doing the jobs of 1.5 people. I'm hoping that at the beginning of the year, with a new budget, there will be some workload readjustment/reassignment. This is the second time I've gotten sick since my "promotion" and I think it's stress-related.

It is easy to say that sick people should stay home but I have tight deadlines that need to be met. If I have a reporting deadline there is no way I can call off.

It drives me insane when people send their kids to school sick. I have nearly caught the Black Plague from them I've told DH that if there is ever a real zombie plauge, you know Patient 0 is going to be found in daycare. Gwen got sick and then a few days later I got sick, a few days after that DH got sick. By the time we knew she was sick we'd already spread our germs everywhere. DH got half his co-workers sick. We started calling Gwen our little Patient 0.

One of the things I like about having PTO is that people generally only take time off when they are actually sick, rather than calling in because they feel slightly under the weather, which has happened at other places I've worked that has vacation and sick time. However, my employer has a generous PTO policy, and does allow us to carry over some of our PTO to the next year.
Generally, I do stay home when I'm sick. But, there are a few times of the year when I have to work. It's not ideal but it's what is necessary.

I follow the daycare and school rules set by the department of health. Fever or vomiting = stay home. Anything outside of that, I use my better judgement.
Did you take note if one theory worked better than the other? Which office had more productivity?

DH's work has a horrible sick policy and they are really nasty about it if you exercise it. So people come in REALLY sick because if you get sent home by the company nurse it doesn't count against you. These are people that handle your food. So I really don't get the concept of creating a situation where it is better for your workers to come in with a fever/vomiting than stay home. We have a really generous sick policy, I can accure up to 250 and then it is capped. I burned thru all of them when I was on maternity leave but I am back to over 100 hours now. I rarely stay home unless I am really sick. I'm the only one in the lab and I barely see anyone during the day. It's not so much I think I am indespensible, it's that work piles up while I am gone and it sucks to be sick then come back to a mountain of emails/work. I'm more exhausted than when I was sick after I get caught up again. So if I am just feeling under the weather I drag myself in.

throwing up is the one thiing that will make me stay home. I do remember working through a 103 fever. We had a huge deadline and there was no one to cover for me. Everyone knew I was deathly sick but in pubic accounting it is an enviroment of "suck it up suzy, there are deadines"....dont' get me wrong, if I didn't have deadlines I would have stayed home.

I have been with my current employer for 2 yrs and we have PTO. People rarely call in sick because they would rather have their days off to do other things. My previous place of employment had separate sick and vacation so some people called in if they had the sniffles.

LOL...actually, it was common to have very sick people at work (if you called off during crunch time you had best be in the hospital!) so we DID keep Lysol around!lol

Did you take note if one theory worked better than the other? Which office had more productivity? One of the VP's and I were discussing this last week. We unofficially use the daycare policy. But we have a small staff and most of us have kids. One of the ladies had a cold and he said she should stay home (he's the biggest wuss in history when he gets a cold). He was saying how it's our kids that bring everything home to us. I told him if we all stayed home everytime we had a cold, there would never be anyone in the office and told him it was his choice.

I typically go to work with a cold but if it is something like the stomach flu I will stay home. About 80% of my job could actually be done from home. Someone might have to email me a couple files but if I needed to work from home I could do it.

I think my sales people would rather I just let them know that I'm sick before they come into the office so that THEY can work from home and avoid me. They know that they'll suffer too if I actually didn't come in.

What is someone suppose to do when they get sick? It is impossible to stay home for every illness...
I started a new job at the rnd of August. So far I have had three separate illnesses. I have to come to work with a box of kleenex and whatever else because I have no sick time. We get 52 hours a year of sick time. I need to save those days for when I have conditions that warrant me staying in bed or on the toilet, so I drag myself to work with abox of kleenex and hacking coughs.

Doxie - do you have allergies? Being sick 3 times since August sounds like a lot to me.

I work in Health Care, so we encourage people not to come in sick. In fact you can't work if you have a fever over 101. Most of my staff is quite willing to make up the workload of people calling in sick. They all do not want to catch anything. It helps that no one currently is bad about abusing the system. When someone does come in coughing and sneezing they are all running around disinfecting everything the sick person touches Recently I had an employee with Lice! They got sent home quick and boy did that freak everyone out.

I fully understand there are people who can't stay home for one reason or another - no pay, etc. That isn't the case in my office. We have a very generous sick leave allotment. If work backs up, everybody pitches in. So because of that? That lady that gave me the flu? I'm licking her telephone when she isn't looking.
